    1. [PACHESTE] Humes Murder 1919-20
    2. MICHELLE ROSS
    3. I just found the article on the PA Chester Rootsweb site of the murder of John Humes by Ralph Kramer. In this article, it states that the family had gone out with a John Ross and another man and upon their arrival home, John Humes was killed. I was wondering if anyone knew the man John Ross. It didn't mention his age or if he was married or anything. My grandfather and ggrandfather were both John Rosses and I was wondering if this was one of them? My ggrandfather was a self employed laborer according to the 1910 census in Chester. His son John would have been married to Mary Eskey at the time with a daughter. Any info would be appreciated. Michelle Ross

I have a BRINTON surname used as a middle name in my ancestors family. John Davis HUGHES was b. 1824/25 in Bellefonte, PA, ( Centre Co.) married Hannah HICKS in 1846, the daughter of Isaac HICKS of Maryland and Hannah LAMBORN of Chester Co. (John Davis Hughes's parents are listed in the LAMBORN family History Book by Samuel LAMBORN as Henry and Martha Jane HUGHES. ) There was a John and James HUGHS/HUGHES in Centre and Northumberland Co in the late 1700's. ~ possibly the same one that were in Chester Co.) Family History is that they were Welsh. John and Hannah HUGHES named one of their sons ~ Isaac BRINTON HUGHES. Other middle names are CHAMBERS, DURBIN, and MILTON I thought maybe it was the Hughes family connected to the Brintons, but it also could be the LAMBORN line. Does anyone have any info? Thanks! 1. [PACHESTE] Phoenixville, PA
    2. Hi everyone. Recently my mother found an old scrapbook that my grandmother had kept for years. In the scrapbook there are tons of different articles on Phoenixville, PA and how it was in the "olden days". There are old pictures that were published in a column called "Down Memory Lane" these pictures consist of the bad Hurricane in the 50's, the fire that destroyed the Mont Clare bridge, the "great flood", etc. They also include pictures of various people (some don't list the people's names). There is also articles in a column called "Our Yesterday's" which tells about the old time Phoenixville. If anyone has a line in Phoenixville, I will gladly look through the articles to see if any of them list your ancestors. Deneen

    3. Anna, an addition to your excellent article below. One of my ancestoresses, unmarried at the time, was left an equal share of land as her brothers received. She then proceeded to buy each one of the brothers out! When she married the taxes were no longer paid by her but by the husband. He disappears several years later (dead?) and she resumes paying the taxes and eventually writes a will - all in her maiden name - and this in 1828 in Chester Co, PA. 1. [PACHESTE] Douglass, Gray, Junkins, McCune, Mulvain,
    2. Doug and Patti Ensor
    3. Looking for info to exchange with folks interested in the above surnames circa 1770-1810 from Chester Co. David Jonkien/Junkins/Jenkins/Jinkin - died c. 1793 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA; I need a date, cemetery/family plot name, and would like to know if Oxford is a twp. or a community name; I would like to find out if he has a headstone. David was married to Jane Russell in Ireland and she died between 1770 and 1780 in E. Nottingham Twp. Chester Co. PA; I need a cemetery and would love to find out if she has a headstone. David may have remarried to a lady named Ann. My line is indicated with an *. David and Jane had 5 children: 1. John Junkins, b. 1744 in Ireland and died circa 1750 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA. Any additional info would be most appreciated. 2*. Hannah Junkins, b. 1747 in Ireland and married first, James Douglass*, circa 1769 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA. There is some connection of James to the given name of Abraham but I cannot identify it; any help would be very much appreciated. James is said to have purchased a 239 acre farm in 1770 in East Nottingham Twp. that was sold in 1795 by his 2 sons (David and James*) and 1 daughter-in-law (Elizabeth, married to David). I can't seem to locate where I would try to confirm this info, so any suggestions, film #'s or books would be most appreciated. James died c. 1774, the year his second son, James (Jr.) was born. James Douglas(s)'s estate may be listed in the "Letters of Administration" issued Dec. 28, 1773 to David Junkin (his father-in-law). It is possible that this Letters of Administration may be in a Clerks Book 1, page 131. If anyone has access to any of this info I would be delighted to pay for any copies and postage, or to have you refer me to a source and I will do it myself (as long as I don't have to travel to PA - I live in Washington (the state). Hannah married 2nd, John McElvain/Mulvain/Mulvan/Mulveen circa 1776 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA. He died about Oct. 1, 1793 in E. Nottingham twp. Chester Co. PA. Any info on John or confirming their marriage would be most appreciated. Hannah and John had 4 sons (William, John, Joseph, Junkin) and a daughter (Hannah). I have a lot of info on the sons, and a tidbit on the daughter Hannah. I do not know when or where Hannah died so anyone with info or suggestions on where to look would be very appreciated. 3. Mary Junkins was born about circa 1749 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA. She married Thomas Whiteside who was a doctor in Oxford area and an early supporter of a library at Oxford. The were both buried in the Old Presbyterian Church cemetery, in Oxford, PA. 4. John Junkins, born circa 1752 in Oxford Chester Co. PA. Married Ann _______; I would love to have her surname. They moved to OH c. 1803 to U.S. Military District, Range 4, Township 5, Quarter Township 2. Lots of info to exchange. He was a county commissioner, justice of the peace, and postmaster. Their daughter Jane "Jennie" married Matthew Gray in PA and emigrated west with her parents, daughter Hannah married James Lisk of NY in OH, and daughter Mary married James McCune of Lancaster Co.PA in Muskingum Co. OH. Two sons, David and John, and a daughter Ann, did not marry. 5. Jane Junkins b. c. 1756 in Oxford Chester Co. PA. She married John McCune (son of George McCown/McKown and unknown wife) circa 1777 in Oxford, Chester Co. PA; he may have been a widower. Jane and John moved a lot. They had 8 children including a daughter Jane who married Lewis Vail. There is a source for a lot of info on all 8 children. Like everyone else, I would appreciate any help that might be offered on any of the above. My line is through Hannah and her second child, James Douglass. Patti

Rootsweb I gather copyrights all its submissions by volunteers in order to make sure that it remains free. For example I am sure many of you have seen the information that Rootsweb puts out with regard to people copying or misusing submitted info.Anyone is free to copy or reproduce any of their information as long as the author/transcriber is given credit. It does also clearly state that this is a condition of the information remaining free. Rootsweb confirmed they are taking Action but declined to go into detail. Ian.

    3. General rule of thumb, Alan, is to put aside anything that costs money until you first check out the Free Alternatives. :) I take several issues with this site. The most important issue is that it seems someone is trying to charge people for items which are public record and a part of the Public Domain. Theycan be found Free elsewhere. In the US, you can not charge for public records, but you can charge for your time and services which you invest in obtaining those records for someone. For example, the county, state and federal offices can charge you for research time and cost of materials, but they can't charge you for the information on that record. You may have to visit the office to see the records yourself and you may even have to make an appointment, but viewing the information is Free. Remember, this refers to only those items which are a part of the public domain. I suggest going to the records office, an LDS FHC or even buying the disks from Family Tree, the LDS, the government agencies or even a historical society. This organization you are asking about just don't seem right to me. :( ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Townsend" <art4dodger@earthlink.net> To: <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 06, 2000 4:11 PM Subject: [PACHESTE] Familydiscovery.com > Hi lists, > I have been contacted by the above online genealogy data base asking > me to subscribe. 3. Much too good to be true, in fact. These FamilyDiscovery people are charging for access to a list of links, many of which are part of the USGenWeb Project, that are completely free of charge. Basically, they want to lure you in to something that's already free to anyone, so while they're not technically a fraud, they aren't providing anything that isn't already readily available. And from what I've seen of their Pennsylvania listings, they don't have very much to offer either; for the entire state, there might be three dozen links, and none of them at all from the Chester area. Pretty poor showing, I would say. I found it quite annoying to see someone trying to make a buck off the hard work done voluntarily by so many others. -Mary listowner, PACHESTE-L http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacheste/chester.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Alan Townsend <art4dodger@earthlink.net> To: <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 06, 2000 7:11 PM Subject: [PACHESTE] Familydiscovery.com > Hi lists, > I have been contacted by the above online genealogy data base asking > me to subscribe.
