    1. Re: [PACHESTE] Amish Cemetery in East Whiteland Twp.
    2. Hello. I was interested to read that the Amish cemetery in East Whiteland Twp was being cared for by historically minded Amish from Lancaster for the past 20 years. I visited the cemetery this past May & it was in TERRIBLE shape! It was overgrown with weeds & small trees that looked like they had been there for a while. The stones are mostly broken or illegible now. I've been concerned about the future of this cemetery as there is an industrial park encroaching on it now. While I was there in May, I wrote down what information I could read on the remaining stones (& sent the info to this mailing list). There was a Christian Zug buried there (born Apr. 10, 1752, died Oct 8, 1826, aged 74 years, 5 mos, & 18 days) along with a Magdalene Zug, born 1751, died Aug, 14, 1833. They each had 2 stones, one in German & the other in English. My brother, who works in the area, has taken photos of these stones & has promised to send them to me. If anyone is interested in copies of these, let me know. In case anyone missed it, here is my transcription of the stones as I read them: Morris, son of Mary Zook, who departed this life August 25, 1821, aged 9 mos & 18 days. Ann M. Zook, died July(?) 1841, aged 13(?)years, 4 mos, 13 days. William(?) Zook died in 1821 Abraham Lapp, died Feb. 2, 1860(?), 75th or 78th year. There is a smaller stone to the left of him that I couldn't read except for some reference to Abraham Lapp. Christian Lapp, looks as if it says he died in 1861. Jacob Ruth, born 1817(?), died 1865. Anne Ruth died Dec 17(?), 1835, 70th year. Sarah Davis, wife of Edward Davis, departed this life Dec (?) 1824, aged 25 years, 8 months, 11 days. Mary, daughter of Edward & Sarah Davis, Jan or June 29, 1822, 8 mos, 8 days. John Career, died Nov. 14, 1813, aged 47 years, 3(?)mos, 27 days. In sacred memory of Eliza A., Isaac Z. Coffman MD, and second daughter of James and Sarah Whitaker, born 17 Sept. 1811, died 20 Mar 1840. Eliza, daughter of Eliza & I.Z. Coffman MD, died Feb. ???? Joseph Coffman, died April ? 1815 in his 30th (or 36th) year, can't read any more except where it says "affectionate husband, (some kind of) parent, sincere friend & pious Christian." Phebe Hall, born Jan. 20, 1786, rest is underground. Adam Rickabac, I believe this is in German & it was homemade (scratched in stone) IMAHR(?) 1805 or 1905, alt 79 IOH. Elizabeth Shank, died June 24th, 1823 in the 66th year of her age. Christian Zug, born Apr. 10, 1752, died Oct 8, 1826, aged 74 yrs., 5 mos., & 18 days Magdalene Zug, born 1751, died Aug. 14, 1833. Ann Meconkey, daughter of John & Elizabeth Meconkey, died 1833. Frederic Vanoever (or Vandever), son of WV & MH Husted, b. Feb ??, 1875, died Aug. ??, 1877 (this one was propped up by the gate to the cemetery) Roxanne

Whiteland Twp. or at Malvern? I can find Malvern on my road atlas -- it is just off Rt.30 at the edge of where Philadelphia begins. Sure would like to know who is buried in these cemeteries.² I can answer a few of the questions raised here. So far as I know the cemetery has never been known as the Lapp Cemetery. Chester Valley Amish Cemetery, Flat Road Cemetery and Union Hall Graveyard are the three names I¹ve seen and heard over the years. (I grew up about a mile from the graveyard and I also expect, but have no proof, that Moritz Zug an ancestor of mine is buried there.) It is located on Flat Road in East Whiteland Twp, in the far northern part of the township, right on the northwest edge of the Great Valley Corporate Center. A group of historically-minded Amish from Lancaster County have been caring for the graveyard for the past twenty years or more. ³In the October 1937 issue of Chester County Collections, Vol. #8, a periodical of the Chester County Historical Society, Miss Dorothy Lapp, published an inventory of the surnames and dates on the tombstones ...[here]. That periodical is on file at the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, PA.² (This is from a single sheet transcription of the gravestones I photocopied at the historical society.) Many of the inscriptions which were legible for Dorothy Lapp in 1937 are illegible today, more than 65 years later. The 38 marked graves include primarily Coffmans, Lapps and Zooks. I suppose this might be useful or of interest to more than just Doug Garber, so I¹ll give you Dorothy Lapp¹s transcription of the Flat Road Cemetery. I tacked on the individaul numbers from Gingerich and Kreider¹s Amish and Amish Mennonite Genealogies, where I was fairly certain.] Name of Deceased Date of Birth Date of Death Age Relationship 1. SECOND: Please identify which time period: 1795 -1860 or 1860 -1906 Example of subject line: Naturalization -- THOMAS, James 1860 -1906 NOTE: Women were NOT Naturalized in this time period -- they became a citizen if & when their husband did or when they married a man who had already became a citizen or was a citizen. 1. [PACHESTE] GERBER-ZUG in Chester Co., PA
    2. Douglas Garber
    3. Hi All, Here is an interesting connection: Barbara ZUG b 1743 E. Whiteland Twp., Chester Co., PA, was the d/o Christian ZUG b. 1710 Hesse, Germany and Anna KANNABEL. She married Michael BUCHELE/BEEGHLEY who founded the Brethren GARBER line that went to Montgomery Co., OH. (Don't have this full line in the database yet.) There is one other Brethren GARBER line that seems to originate in Whiteland Twp. Also, I have some indication that Chester County, PA, contains ancestors of Johannes GERBER, d. 1777 Berks Co., PA.. Barbara ZUG b 1781 Exton, Chester Co., PA. was a grand daughter of Moritz ZUG b. 1715 Hesse, Germany (brother of the above Christian). She was also w/o Hannes GERBER b. 17 Jan 1772 Cumru Twp., Berks Co., PA, the son of Johannes d. 1777 and his second wife Susanna. This seems to be the best chance yet to find the maiden names of the wives of Johannes GERBER d 1777 -- ZUG or ZOOK is currently the favorite. This also seems to be the source of a lost line of GARBERs that went to Juniata Co., PA -- not sure whether this line was Amish or Brethren. I need help with the following. I'm not sure where the LAPP Cemetery in the Chester Valley is located. This also the place that may contain both Brethren and Amish LAPPs. No one seems to realize that George LAPP b 1740 m. Veronica Franey GERBER b 1750 (the third child of Johannes d. 1777 and Christina). Christian ZUG and possibly his brother Moritz ZUG are buried there. Could this cemetery be located at E. He was seated in the library of his house, at George and Elm streets, when a bullet crashed through a closed window and struck the wall, a short distance from his head. The person who fired the shot is unknown. ROBBERS SHOT AT GIRL Five masked men blew open the safe in the post office at Port Kennedy early Sunday morning, bound and gagged two citizens who had been aroused by the noise of the explosion, and shot six times at a young woman who sought to arouse the village by ringing a bell from a window. The post office safe was cracked about 2 o'clock in the morning. It proved to be empty, and the robbers hurried away in disgust. Albert ILLERMAN, hearing the report of the explosion, stepped outdoors and ran into the arms of five masked men. He was seized, bound and gagged hand and foot and carried to the rear of the yard. His pockets were rifled, $2 being obtained. When ILLDERMAN did not return to the house, Isaac BOSSLER went in search of him. He came upon the men in the yard just as they had finished going through the pockets of the prostrate man. Held up by five revolvers, BOSSLER received the same treatment as did ILLERMAN. His clothes yielded $17 in coin. Completing this job, the robbers heard a dinner bell ringing an alarm. Behind the bell was the determined face of Miss Lillian BAILEY, who leaned from a second floor window of the village hotel, and swung the bell for dear life. Six bullets were sent in her direction. One of them knocked the bell out of the young woman's hand. She "ducked" and was not injured. The robbers crossed the river to Betzwood and escaped. Half a mile up the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks was found the postmaster's strong box which had been dropped after being rifled. Its contents were not of value to the thieves. Just twenty-four hours prior to the robbery at Port Kennedy the post office safe at Spring City was "cracked" and robbed of stamps and money amounting to $175. The same gang doubtless did both jobs, as the towns are not far apart. USED FORCE ON CARTRIDGE WHEN IT EXPLODED Ira KOONS, son of Frank KOONS of Lehighton, met with a painful accident at his home. He was engaged in placing a blank cartridge into a revolver. The cartridge would not fit, and he used a silver table knife for the purpose of forcing it into the barrel when it exploded, inflicting a severe wound in the palm of his hand. Dr. J.K. HENRY found that a piece of rag which had been in the barrel of the revolver for some time entered his patients right hand. It was at first thought that the cartridge caused the wound but it was later found on the floor of the kitchen.

    3. Robin: The "History of Chester Co, PA" [Futhey & Cope] identifies Hannah as the daughter of Mordecai and Sarah Chadds CLOUD. It shows her as married to Joseph Davis. "Early Church Records of Chester Co." v.3 [Martha Reamy] show the record of Hannah's marriage to Joseph DAVIS on 1736.2.1 at Kennett. Joseph is listed as 'of East Marlborough' but there isn't a mention of his parents. ...Candy :) > [Original Message] > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 11/15/2003 7:04:06 AM > Subject: [PACHESTE] CLOUD-DAVIS connection > > Does anyone have any info on Hannah CLOUD and Joseph DAVIS? 3. The earliest census records I find for the name Moncrief is 1870...at Accessible Archives all I find is this (very early): makes me wonder about alternate spellings..... ITEM #57747 June 21, 1775 The Pennsylvania Gazette PHILADELPHIA, June 21. By particular Desire, the SERMON intended to have been preached in Christ Church on Friday Morning next, before the Military Association, is postponed to 6 o'Clock in the Evening of the same Day. On Tuesday, the sixth instant, there was an exchange of prisoners at Cambridge, between the Provincials and Regulars, which was managed by General Putnam, on the one part, and Major Moncreif, on the other. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2003 10:37 AM Subject: [PACHESTE] Phoeixville MONCRIEFS > Catherine MONCRIEF b. about 1820 (Mrs.John Spotten) is my 2nd > great-grandmother.
