I was wondering if SKS would look up an obit for me: Flora May Rimel June 13, 1932 I am trying to confirm her maiden name. DC says Parsoll but her son's DC has her as Flora Stanley. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Bob Young --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing
Looking for researchers of the name Wilson who may have had Virginia connections. Time period would be prior to and around 1774. I have a Jacob Wilson b. 1774 in Chester Co. PA that went to Virginia. He married Margaret King of Union Co. Va. They ended up in White Co. IL. Children were: John M. Wilson; James L. Wilson; Oliver H.P. Wilson; R. Adaline Wilson; Mary Wilson and Jane Wilson. A few weeks ago there was some discussion about the old cemetary on Lapp Road in East Whiteland. Yesterday, I was wallowing in Baldwin's Book Barn and came across two issues of "Chester County Collections" - a pamphlet series put out by the "Bureau of Historical Research" in West Chester in 1939. Issue number 16 has a lengthy history of the church that used to be at that location. The article was written by Dorothy Lapp. The meeting house was known as "Union Hall" and was alleged to have been the earliest Amish Mennonite Meeting House in the U.S. The congregation also had a school. The article includes names of many members of the congregation, including marriages and childrens' names. Email me if you think you have a connection and want me to take a look. I may get around to scanning it someday if I can get the scanner to work.
Today's Daily Local News has an article about the search for a mass grave of Irish railway workers in East Whiteland Township. http://www.dailylocal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=10935925&BRD=1671&PAG=461&dept_id=17782&rfi=6
Hi JC, I don't have an answer, just a direction you may want to explore. James Stewart, about whom I know nothing except what is contained in his will, was of Goshen. His will was dated May 19, 1817 and proved May 15, 1818. His will does not name a wife, presumably she predeceased him. Children named in his will - John Stewart; Ann wife of John Grangee; Hannah wife of JOSEPH MERCER; Naomi wife of John Bale and Phebe wife of August John. Also named is grandson Riley Stewart. Phebe Stewart was born Sept 25, 1783 and is the last named child in the will, one may presume that she was the youngest, at least of the 4 daughters. This gives a good match on time period for her to possibly be the aunt of your Stewart Mercer, born 1803. Only a few other things that I know. This Joseph Mercer was a descendant of the Quaker immigrant Thomas Mercer and that Joseph was disowned for marrying out. Also, I have seen the name spelled Steward in one source. Who was the one who first posted the information about the Irish Railroad Workers Grave. This afternoon I have had a thought and question to ask, but since my mailbox is so full, I deleted the email. Please contact me. Sharon
Hi Wendy, Yes, maybe you can help me. In my search form my Irish, railroad workers, lol In my search over the years I have found some clues that my Daniel Baker's brother might be the Washington R. Baker postmaster of GlenLoch from 1885-1889. It was run in his store for those years but then later moved to Glen Loch station.(now torn down) Which Idon't think is in the Whiteland area you mentioned but what's interesting is that both of the brother's Washington R. Baker and Daniel Baker married two Sharp sister's. Washington married a Phebe and Daniel married Tamar. The sister's father Samuel Sharp who worked for the railroad was killed in 1873 by a frieght train in Parksburg, Chester Co. Susanna Sharp then went to live with her daughter Phebe and son inlaw Washington Baker until she died in 1887 and was buried at the Malvern cemetery I would love to confirm my hypothesis joining these two families. Do you have any of these names though in your book of Irish RR.workers? Thanks in advance, Esther Daniel Baker, b.abt:1834,d.abt:1883(sibs.:Washington Baker, Glenloch postmaster 1885-1889) m.1857,Tamar Sharp,b.1837,d.?(par:Samuel and Suanna Sharp)(sibs:Abigail Yarnell,Anna Essicks,Phebe Baker) chld:John Baker, b.1858,d.1936(sibs:Henery,Sarah Broomall,Samuel,William, Mary, Margaret)W.Chester C.Co.1860c-1880c,Middletown,Del.Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy Mclean" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 08, 2004 9:09 PM Subject: [PACHESTE] Irish railway workers graves > Today's Daily Local News has an article about the search for a mass grave of Irish railway workers in East Whiteland Township. > > http://www.dailylocal.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=10935925&BRD=1671&PAG=461&dep t_id=17782&rfi=6 > > > ==== PACHESTE Mailing List ==== > Visit the PA GenWeb Archives at > http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/pafiles.htm >
Very interesting story. I have lived in Chester County all my life and have never heard anything about this story. It just goes to prove that Chester County still has a wealth of history that is left behind which eventually comes out and creates a continuous mystery. Even more interesting to me is that my GG grandfather was an Irish immigrant sometime in the 1840's or 1850's and he worked for the railroad in Philadelphia. In my case, I know where he is buried. His only son-in-law also worked for the railroad. Sharon

Ray, Was Leah Essick/Essex the sister to a Rev. H. Essick that performed the marriage of two of my relatives. Joseph H Gordon, to Joanna Marther/Mathers on March 20, 1849.? I could not access HeritageQuest information thru the Godfrey Memorial Library with my Netscape so I updated to Netscape 7.1 and I still can't access the HeritageQuest files. I have no problem accessing the accessable archives thru Godfrey. Just the HeritageQuest files. I encounter a message saying that my computer has timed out. I don't know how to find where to adjust this. My computer guru's father is terminal and I've not had the heart to push him to come over and help me out. Is anyone on the list familiar with this timing out problem and able to tell me how to remedy the situation? Thanks
