    3. Nothing came up under spelling Sherwyn. This was the only item under Sherwin. Source: Accessible Archives ITEM #3619 September 20, 1739 The Pennsylvania Gazette Township of Chester Burlington County SS. WHEREAS in the American Weekly Mercury No. 1022. In giving the melancholy Account of one James Sherwin, late of our said Township, It is said he was shot at twice before, by the same Person, and badly Wounded, but through Mercy escaped with Life. These are to certify, that we whose Names are here under written (some of us being on the Coroners Inquest) Neighbours, are well satisfied the Person never shot at nor wounded the said James Sherwin as above, before the time he received his mortal Wound. As Witness our Hands the 6th of 7th Month, 1739. N.B. Those with this Mark * were in the Coroner's Inquest. Edward Hollinshead, * Samuel Atkinson, Jonathan Borden, Joseph Budden, Hugh Sharp, Samuel Hollinshead, * Joseph Claypoole, * Joshua Wright, William Hollinshead, Jacob Taylor, John Hollinshead, jun. Ah, here's another, under spelling Sherrin (I found this by searching for John Ward): ITEM #3552 August 2, 1739 The Pennsylvania Gazette PHILADELPHIA. On the 26th of July past JOHN WARD near ANCHOCAS, going out to hunt Deer, perceived something to stir in the Bushes, and seeing the Botom part of a Man's white Shirt, he thought it to be the white of a Deer's Tail, fir'd his Gun off, and kill'd one JAMES SHERRIN, his Neighbour (who was out on the same Account) on the Spot. The Assembly of this Province meet on Monday next by their Adjournment. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Stanley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 08, 2004 12:21 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] Available Databases at Accessible Archives - FYI > Gail Steckel wrote: > > >Since some of the requests I'm getting are outside of the scope of data > >available at Accessible Archives, I thought it might be wise to post what IS > >available. > > > >Newspapers/Magazines: > > > > > > Godey`s Lady`s Book 1830-1880 > > > > The Pennsylvania Gazette 1728-1800; "The New York Times of the 18th > >Century" > > > > The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective > >November 1860 - April 1865 > >The Charleston Mercury * The New York Herald * Richmond Enquirer > > > > African American Newspapers: The 19th Century > > > > The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: > >Delaware County 1819-1870 > >The Industrial Revolution in Delaware County /w Vital Statistics > > > > The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: > >Chester County 1809-1870 > > > > American County Histories to 1900: > >This section contains copies of published histories of the following areas: > >New Jersey, Delaware, and the Eastern portion of PA. > > > > > > > > > >==== PACHESTE Mailing List ==== > >Check out the searchable US GenWeb Project Archives! > >http://searches.rootsweb.com/usgwarch.html > > > > > > > > > Hello Gail > > I am looking for a copy of an article in the Pennsylvania Gazette No. > 555 {Jul-Aug 1738} Titled " Death of James Sherwyn" who was shot by John > Ward.. 1. Obit of deceased father fot the son placed for adoption
    2. List, I received the following request which I cannot do. Is there a kind soul out there who would like to help Norm? If you are interested please e-mail him at: [email protected] <<Hi Helen, You have helped me in the past with sending out messages to the Rootweb list people. I wondered if you might be able to research an obituary for me??? I have found out my Birth parents names and unfortunately my B-father is deceased. Harold William Gilger was born Jan 28 1943 and he died in March of 1973 His wife is Ruth Marlean (Hobbs) Gilger -- They have three children I was their forth - but was placed for adoption. They were living in Chester when I was born. (1966) That is all I know. I wondered if you lived in the Chester area if you would/could research at a library the actual obituary as it was printed in the Chester Times. I believe they changed the name of the paper to Delaware County Times. But I'm not sure what name it was in 1973. Anyhow, I found out that the Widener Library would probably have it. I called and they said that they wouldn't search for me that I had to come in. I live in CT and it would be about 3 1/2 hour drive for me. I am seriously considering getting down there...but thought of you. If I am asking too much, please let me know. Greatly appreciate your help. Norm>> Thank you! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. 28 Mar 1904 -- Chester Times (new rules on naturalization)
    2. Hi list, I came across this info in the Delaware County Daily Times, in the 100 Years Ago section. 28 Mar 1904 -- Chester Times After the new rules of the court go into effect the first Monday of April, it will not be easy for a foreigner to secure naturalization papers in the county. The new rules are strict on this question and the applicant must clearly prove that he is entitled to become a citizen of the Untied States before the right can be conferred upon him. The most important change in the rules is that requiring each person who desires to become a citizen of the United States to be represented by a lawyer, a member of the Delaware County Bar. The applicant also must be a bona fide resident of this county for at least six months immediately preceeding (sic), his application. This will bar outsiders coming into the county just to be made citizens. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. Sharpless Reunions -- picture?
    2. Good morning list, A friend of mine sent me this query -- I don't have an answer for him but if anyone can help him, please e-mail Reece THOMAS at [email protected] Last Tuesday night Wm. Bunce Auctioneer had a framed group picture \of the 1882 Reunion of the SHARPLESS family taken at SHARPLESS Rock. I guess it was in 1982 I attended the 300th reunion festivities held at Weidner College. Among the items on display was another large group picture of a later than 1882 vintage that someone had numbered most of the people in the photo and cross referenced then in an accompanying notebook. Are you familiar with what I am describing? If so, do you know who has possession of this historical gem. My interest is that my great grandfather and great grandmother and his brother Barclay Thomas are identified in this picture. It really would be great with today's digital cameras to be able to take a picture of them for my family's record. Reece Thomas [email protected] Thank you! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. [PACHESTE] Dickinson family SE PA... 1824

    3. I believe that I am finally getting close to getting the information that I need to connect my family to the family of the younger Gaius Dickinson. What really thru me off was that there were 2 Gaius Dickinsons. He is the son of one of the older Gaius Dickinson's sons. I am still looking for information on the Dickinson family from Chester Co, PA mainly my gr gr grandfather Isaac Dickinson b 1824 believed to have been born in Berks Co, PA he was the only male Dickinson child that I could find that was between 5 - 10 years old in the 1830 Census was in the household of Gaius Dickinson. Gaius Dickinson (the elder one) was a Quaker. But in the 1840 Census there are males >15 and <20 in the households of Nathaniel Dickinson, Benjamin Dickinson and Joseph Dickinson all in Robeson Twp. Berks Co. These are all relatives of Gaius Dickinson. I believe that Nathaniel is the father of the younger Gaius Dickinson. I believe that Isaac Dickinson is the son or grandson of the second Gaius! Dickinson, or one of Gaius' brothers. There was a young male child living with Gaius Dickinson during the 1830 Census. But he could just as easily be the son of one of the first Gaius Dickinson's sons. Curse them for not including ALL names in the earlier Census'! Isaac married Martha ? and moved to Chester Co. Believe that Martha's family is from Chester Co. I found them in both the 1860 and 1870 Chester Co. Census and both had my great grandfather listed in his household as his son. I also found him in the 1880 Census living with his daughter Caroline and her husband, but there was no mention of his wife Martha. I was told that Gaius Dickinson died in 1800, so is the Gaius Dickinson that is listed in the 1830 Berks Co Census his son or grandson? I did not realize that there were 2 of them. Here is what was listed in the 1870 Census: The Isaac Dickinson 46 M (b. 1824) and his wife Martha 42 F (b. abt 1828) and their family are listed in the 1870 Census in Valley Twp. Dist 166 p28 #205 #207 (on roll 1325 Book 1 page 49b) He and the oldest 3 are listed as working at ? 3. Helen --- That is all the information you are going to get from the 1857 (there is also an 1842 census for Chester County). They were taken basically for tax purposes and thus only listed people with occupations (usually males but ocasionally a widowed female). Only in one township (Charlestown) in 1842 that I saw was the age of the person listed. I don't know why that happened but for some reason the person recording the census listed it. I have a copy of the microfilm on permanent loan here with both census but it won’t provide any additional information that what you have in the index listing.
