Does anyone know where Edgley is at in PA? I tried Mapquest and they said that they couldn't find an Edgley in Pa... The Obituary says that she died in her son Alfred Snyder Hess' home in Edgley... Sorry I don't have Benjamin :( but here's the obit transcription for Anna, and when I have time I'll scan it and email to you, if you'd like. This has quite a bit of clues regarding Anna. I'd check out the Red Lion Church and also see who took over that funeral home-might have some awesome records for you, for both Benj. & Anna!! Have you checked the other census records for them? Let me know!! (I think I'm more excited about find this for you than you are for getting it lol - IF you don't already have the info!) Daily Local News September 25, 1950 Anna Snyder Hess Anna Snyder Hess, widow of the late Benjamin Hess, died yesterday morning at the home of her son, Alfred Snyder, in Edgley. She was 87, and had been ill for about a year. Mrs. Hess was born in York county to Abraham and Elizabeth Taylor Snyder, and lived in Modena for many years. She was a member of Red Lion Methodist Church. Hi - I found Anna Snyder Hess' obit in my miscellaneous HESS newspaper clippings that I copied at the CCHS last year (don't have Benjamin's). I will transcribe the obit and send it to you direct, since it's copywrited. I also wanted to send the basic info to the lists, so it would be "out there" and hopefully helps someone else. Here is the basic info: Anna, 87, died Sept 24, 1950, WIDOW of the late Benjamin Hess (I think you gave his date of death as possible 1953?). She was born in York county & her parents were Abraham and Elizabeth Taylor Snyder. She lived in Modena. You might check out the Red Lion Church as that was mentioned also. She had two sons, Alfred and Harry, and two daughters, Mrs. Hastings Dickinson and Mrs. Horace Townsley. Services were at the Gensemer Funeral Home, 1030 E. Lincoln Hwy., Coatesville. In the newspaper clipplings, right under Anna's obit, was an Abraham H. Hess death notice. I think I posted that on the data board, RootsWeb: Daily Local News, April 7, 1892 HESS.--Near Atglen, March 30, Abraham H. Hess, son of C. B. and E. Hess. Funeral on April 2. Hope this helps! I called the Church and talked with a lady in the office. She looked up my gr grandmother who is buried in the Cemetery. My gr grandfather MAY be buried there with her, but she said that she didn't have any way to check that from there in the office. I went to the CCHS site, but they didn't have any searchable databases online that I could find. My Gr Grandfather is Benjamin P Hess b 5 Sep 1855 in PA. I believe that he died about May 1953 and that his wife Anna Snyder Hess b 18 Oct 1863 d Sept 27, 1950. Are there any pictures of the headstones in the Hephzibah Baptist Cemetery?Thank you for your help, Mary L Dickinson > You might want to check with the CCHS.....if memory serves they have > Hephzibah records there. > > Is there a record of who is buried in the Hephzibah Cemetery in > > Chester County that is accessible from the internet? Is there a record of who is buried in the Hephzibah Cemetery in Chester County that is accessible from the internet? If not is there anyway to contact the cemetery directly? Thanks, Mary
My ancestor, Sarah Hughes, b.1830, the daughter of John Hughes and Rebecca Walton married William S. Barnard, b. ab.1817. They lived in Chester County, in Coatesville, at the time of the 1880 census. I find them in no other census listings in Ancestry.. Sarah died in Delaware County, at the home of her daughter, Margaret Thompson, in 1916. She is buried in Hephzibah Baptist Cemetery, Chester County. (I was unable to find records of the grave, after visiting the pastor of the Church.) I am especially interested in learning more about William S. Barnard. For years, I have been trying to connect him with the prominent Barnard Quaker family in Chester County, (E. Fallowfield, etc.) I am now inclined to believe that he had no connection to them, and I would love to get some documented information. I would also be pleased to learn more about Sarah's parents. Apparently her father came from England. Can anyone help me with this puzzle? I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. Hilma
Hi one & all, The following article was just in Delaware County Daily Times on 15 Apr 2004 -- it is referring to the founding of Lawn Croft Cemetery: Others Times 100 TEARS AGO -- 1904 The inner-city cemetery is now an assured fact as the property lying partly in the State of Delaware, a few miles south of Chester, has been purchased and will be converted into a place of burial. The ground taken is on the Ridge Road and includes the SPEIRS & ARMSTRONG farms. The ground is located along the Wilmington Division of the Chester Traction Co. It is high and commands a splendid view of the Delaware River and is many ways is (sic) suited to the purpose of sepulchre (sic). Officers of the group buying the ground are J. Newlin GOTHRUP, president; I. H. RYAN, first vice president; E. F. WHITE, second vice president; Horace G. KNOWLES, esq., secretary; and Samuel N. TRUMP, treasurer. My NOTE: In 1904 the newspaper was "The Chester Times." Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

Janean, I, too, have a John Wilson in my family, who hailed from Chester County. In fact, we may have communicated recently about this -- if I'm correct, then our Wilson lines are not connected. I'll send you a personal, off-list e-mail to verify. HOWEVER, we apparently have other connections, namely, on the KEARNEY side. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was KEARNEY, and is a part of the same line from which Gen. Philip KEARNEY (G.A.R.) descended. Books have been written about Gen. Kearney's more famous ancestor, Stephen Kearney, after whom Ft. Kearney, Nebraska is named. Stephen was a soldier in the Mexican-American War the preceded the U.S. Civil War. I've been told by other family members that although our Kearney line is only distantly related to the General's line, nonetheless the ties are real, and apparently have been filed with some historical association. That's one item the needs my follow-up. Want some more strange coincidences? My father was John Wilson Cook III -- from Chicago. However, I'm sure there is no connection with the Cooks on your side. I'll write you privately with more details. -----Original Message----- From: Janean Ray [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 14, 2004 5:00 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [PACHESTE] PA, KY, VA, IL I'M GOING FISHIN' y'all. Sorry Larry Nothing in Humphey's Births book for them; but as I said, his book was not all encompassing! I also checked wills book I have for 1801-1825 and nothing there either for Harbison, but this book is after yours left Chester Co. Have you checked this site for PA Archives? http://www.iarchives.com/anc_04/search.jsp?toc=b6ssqujqas8 If it asks about a viewer or something, just answer with 'Yes' or Y! Hi, I seek, for the later 1700's, Ann(a) BELL and her parents and siblings. Anna married Seth HOOPES. It is known that two of her three children were buried at Middletown Meeting. I have a *feeling* I know who her parents were, but wish to make certain one way or t'other. Thanks! Vince Summers
