I would like to apologize to the list for my previous posting regarding Dick Eastman's newsletter and the article on Gencircles.com and Pearl Street Software. I was only trying to help and meant no harm. I have always tried to help others in anyway that I can because I thought that was what these list were all about, helping one another. Again, I apologize to those who I have offended. Connie Cotterill Schumaker [email protected] Keep genealogy free! Volunteer "Practice random acts of kindness"......
I think it was President Lincoln who said You can please SOME of the people ALL the time, ALL the people SOME of the time but you can't please ALL the people ALL the time. I, for one, appreciate hearing of new genealogy sites, along with prices, and what's going on with old genealogy sites. Terri
Are we now allowed to advertise a commercial product on the lists, including a request for money????? Last I heard, it was forbidden by the AUP. . . . . . Sally, I'm glad that you mentioned that, because I was about to bring that up myself. I'm in Orlando (Orange County) and am able to use Heritage Quest 24/7 from my home. Listers, it might be worth your while to call your local library, to see if you're able to access the library's websites from remote locations. Hope the list owner doesn't mind this subject, but I wish that someone had told me about this long before I found out about it! Just to make this a totally legit post, I'll let you know that I'm still researching my Smiths from Willistown, as well as Johnson, Farra, O'Neill, Dempsey, and assorted other branches in my tree. Hello listers ; This Ancestry access debate is interesting : just for the record, I myself live in Pinellas County, Florida , the Pinellas County Public Libraries have Ancestry Plus online, the Genealogy section of the Largo Library has an outstanding collection of books and papers, plus Ancestry Plus, ALSO a wonderful group of volunteers who knock themselves out to help you ; ALSO if you have a Pinellas Co. Library card, you can sign-on ( with your access code, that you get from the Library) to Ancestry Plus, from home - 24 -7 . Now you can't beat that !! If you live outside the county, you have to pay a fee. This is one reason I voted for our Penny for Pinellas , and feel our taxes are going for a really good cause. Just thought you'd like to know , Cheers, Sally Dutton

Hi Folks, Enough with the Ancestry comments! This subject is way off topic and is not to be discussed on the list anymore..if you must comment, do it OFF LIST. This list is for discussing our ancestors in Chester County and facts about Chester Co. only! Kind Regards, Peggy Chester Co. Listowner
Hi Gail, It sounds like a subscription mix up or delay since you recently renewed. Check your credit card record to see if both charges went through. I have the basic subscription plus the subscription to the census (two separate fees). The basic subscription still covers everything except the census, the UK data bases, the newspapers/periodicals data bases and the new emmegration/ships info they've come out with. It seems to me they are adding new data bases for a fee, and haven't decreased access to the old ones in the basic mode. I hope you can clear up what happened to your basic subscription. Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com and I believe Myfamily.com are all owned by the same company... Why they don't just consolidate them is obviously just so that they can get more money from thier customers who don't know that they are all one company... Their only reason is to get as much money as they can possibly get! ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 02, 2004 3:51 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] off topic - Ancestry users only > Hi, > > I am also a subscriber to Ancestry.com and have been since about 1998. Thanks, Gail. I've been debating whether to subscribe to Ancestry or not. Others have told me that their services are shrinking, unless one has deep pockets. I wonder if that has to do with the reduced access to vital records in our county offices and libraries and archives? Seems to be a trend. If by any chance anyone in the Chester Co who is intending to go to the CCHS, if they could keep an eye out for info on Washington R. Baker himself. Now in one of my last trips, I did copy some of the clippings and I'm aware of his being a post master of Glenloch as well as owning a store where he ran the post office from. I also have the clipping of the obit announcement of his mother inlaw Susan (Susanna) Sharp who was living with him at the time in 1887. Its interesting because Susanna was living with her other son inlaw and daughter Daniel Baker and Tamar in 1880 census! Therefore concluding my suspecion mentioned earlier that Phebe, Washington's wife is yet another one of my Tamar's sisters!!!! therefore marking that two sisters married two brothers? Daniel Baker and Washington R. Baker were brother's who married Tamar Sharp and Phebe Sharp. What I'm looking for is the some other type of link. Maybe a obit of Washington R. I apreciate those who call my attention to situations such as she did with her ancestry membership. This may not be the place to complain but at least call our attention to it. It also lets that person know if any others are having the same problems or if it is an individual problem. Personally, I work part time and make very minimal $ a year. I go 3 months of the year with no work and no pay check. I scramble all year to save money to get me through the summer months and so I can do my genealogy. This is my choice to do so being that I am a mom with very important interests in my children. I value my $ and want to know if they are being abused. I want to know if I am getting less for my $. It calls my attention to it and I can then check into my membership situation. Thank you for sharing your situation. Sharon
Gail, The first two words of your subject line speak for themselves, as this is definitely OFF TOPIC for this list, particularly since you have chosen to flame the very people who are making it possible for you to flame them, and IMHO, that is very tacky to say the least. If you wish to complain, there is a better place to do it, and without subjecting the rest of us to your anger. For the record, I subscribe to Ancestry as well, and have "for years" as you stated, and I have not noticed any decrease whatsoever in the service we pay for. If you have, then the Chester County List is NOT the place complain about it, because none of us can help you. David E. Hi, I am also a subscriber to Ancestry.com and have been since about 1998. I feel that they have increased their size considerably and have gone to some expense to do so. If you will notice Ancestry.com is not the only one that is doing this. MyFamily.com used to be free and you could set up your family site and communicate with other family members by invitation and now they charge for the same thing. I subscribe to all of Ancestry.com and I have called them to say, that since I have all their packages that I should have a discount. I have subscribed at different times to different databases so they give me the discount. I can understand your being incensed but everything goes up in price anymore and you are getting less and less for the money. Groceries are another good example of this mentality. I have found so much on Ancestry.com that I would have had to go to many places to get the same information that I feel the cost is justified.
