    2. Breaded, stewed tomatoes were almost a "staple" when I was growing up in central PA. I think the bread was simply used to sop up some of the tomato juice so they had a bit more stability. I know also that we were served breaded stewed tomatoes in the cafeteria at State College Hi School occasionally and they were even an optional vegetable on the menu at the restaurant where I worked in State College during my hi school years. Until a couple of wks ago (on this list), I'd never heard of the idea of dumplings in stewed tomatoes, however. But as I said then, I don't see how you can ever go wrong with dumplin's.     3. Our tomates were made with home canned whole tomatoes, heated, then the dumplings dropped in. Never had them with bread until college. Still have to find anyone who had similar diah!!
