It has been a matter of dispute among authorities as to who were the first settlers at Spring Mills, and where authorities differ we will not presume to decide. Certain it is however, that previous to 1800, there was built a mill just below the big spring. The children of this union were: Reuben, who died in Stephenson county, Ill.; Matilda, who married George Dauberman, and died in Kane county, Ill.; Ira, who died in Brush Valley, at the age of twenty years; Margaret, who married Benjamin Gramley, and died in 1895, in Kane county, Ill.; Charles, who died when nineteen years old in Miles township; Simon, now of Harvey county, Kans.; Jonathan, our subject; Anna B., now the widow of Perry Condo, of Jacksonville, Penn.; Edward of Kane county, Ill.; and Uriah, of Harvey county, Kans. The mother died February 24, 1857, and her remains were interred in Rebersburg in the family burial plat. The father married a second wife, Rebecca Lutz, of Penn Valley, who died in May, 1888, leaving no children. HOLT, which the latter has greatly improved, and on which he resides. He was a son of Thomas MAYES, an Englishman, who was an early settler of Penn's Valley; he lived and died on his farm, about two miles west of POTTER's Mills, in what is called 'The Loop.' The farm is now owned and occupied by Uriah SLACK. John MAYES was a shoemaker by trade, and worked on the bench when shoes were wanted; at other times cleared land and cultivated the soil. He was a peacable, industrious citizen, and died about 1851, leaving a widow, who has since died. They settled in Centre county, and were married in 1776 or 1777. Their son William was born December, 1778, George, 1781, Elizabeth, 1783, and others of their lineal descendants followed in 1797, 1798, etc. Michael Mayes, a younger son of Thomas Mayes, senior, was born in Centre county, August 14th, 1797, and died February 5th, 1841. He raised a family of 4 sons and 3 daughters, one of whom, Thomas, Jr., is the subject of this notice. He removed to Lewistown in 1841, and is still one of the permanent substantial citizens of this pleasant town. His aged mother, now 79 years old, is still with him.
