from the Nampa, ID Press-Tribune Caldwell Cemetery Desecrated Team will help cleanup 09/05/01 By Sam Bass CALDWELL Members of the Vallivue varsity soccer team will try to undo damage to gravestones at Canyon Hill Cemetery wrecked by vandals over the weekend. The vandals tipped over about 50 headstones late Sunday or early Monday, cemetery sexton Curt Doty said Tuesday. Doty was angry about the thoughtless damage and the effect it would have on loved ones of those buried at the cemetery. Doty said he's worried that sooner or later one of the headstones some weigh up to a ton will fall over on someone and seriously injure or kill them. Lisa Gabiola's family was visiting a loved one's grave Monday when they discovered the vandalism. "It was really heartbreaking," she said. "It looked like a tornado had hit." Some monuments may have been permanently damaged. Gabiola said she saw an elderly man who appeared heartbroken over his wife's grave. This afternoon instead of practice, the Vallivue Varsity Soccer team will help reset the headstones, Coach Tom Baker said. Baker has been telling his teams for years to be involved in more than just soccer, Baker said. Lisa Gabiola's son, Brennan, is on the team. After his mother called to tell Brennan about it, he urged the team to help. They agreed that it was the right thing to do. "What an awful thing," Baker said, referring to the vandalism. "It's unfortunate most kids do good things without notoriety." It's great the kids are willing to help, Doty said. "Maybe they'll tell others how stupid it is to knock over a dead person's headstone." The weekend damage is estimated to cost $1,000 for repairs, not counting manpower and time. Caldwell Police Capt. Gary Maybon said he had not seen the officer's report and could not comment on the investigation.
