    3. I think the militia was organized before a regular army for the Rev. War. I don't think anyone would argue that those who served in the militia were any less involved in the Rev. War than the regular army. My ancestor was in the militia and I noticed he seemed to serve in 2 month stints. A friend reminded me that most people were farmers and so the military had to let people tend the farm from time to time. I have used the PA Archives in the public library. There are pages of Rev. War muster rolls in the Fifth Series and a list of pensioners in the Third Series. My ancestor Gideon SMITH was in the militia. My research into his life was helped immensely by getting his pension application. Pensions weren't available until the 1830s so it's possible an ancestor who was in the war didn't live long enough to apply. As it was his was challenged on the basis his signature was fake...the county officials explained that he was OLD and had paralysis by then...and finally he got his pension. Chances are a lot of "relatives" tried to get pensions after their family member was long gone.
