Where might I find the journal of James HARRIS - 1784 surveying expedition of land that is now a part of Centre and Huntingdon Counties? Is the journal possibly in a library or a private collection? LINN listed all or part of the journal in his 1883 "History of Centre County PA" - see pgs 21 & 22. I would like to know more about the expedition and those who were a part of this group. Are there other journals available with information about the area. I am especially interested in the area that is now Spruce Creek, Warrior's Mark and Ferguson Township. The members of the surveying company were: William BROWN Esq J HARRIS David MILLIGAN George MEEK Andrew SMALL Daniel Beats John REED D ALEXANDER R ALEXANDER Researching in Centre, Huntingdon & Cumberland County, PA: MEEK - SHIFFER - KREPS/KREBS - McWILLIAMS - YOUNG -HERRON and in other parts of Pennsylvania: MECKLING/MECHLING - BIDDLE - DERLING/DARLIN - LAUER - WETZEL - CODER
If you don't hear specifically from someone who knows about this journal, you might try to Pennsylvania Archives. They have a great deal of information, including many letters. Maryann, Below is probably the journal you are searching. Just so you know how to search for things like this: First to http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/ The National Union Collection of Manuscript Collections. I put into the search box: James Harris and got over 200 entries. I narrowed it down with a new search: James Harris Pennsylvania. This is a good way of finding good things. This is only two leaves and does not have too much but may give a clue to the Journal you are searching. Be sure to search both manuscript collections as they will produce different results.
