    1. Re: [PACENTRE] CORRECTION: GARMAN AND FIKE
    2. Jean, Jane Chapman Fike Shultz Garman was my great-great-great-great-aunt. I have a picture of her as a Gold Star Mother helping to dedicate the Milesburg WWI monument in 1919. She was born Nancy Jane Chapman on Oct. 12, 1859, in Spring Twp., Centre Co., PA, probably in the vicinity of Pleasant Gap. She died May 16, 1939, in Boggs Twp., Centre Co., PA. Burial on May 19th at Trcziyulny Cem. in Boggs Twp. Her parents were George Thomas and Elizabeth Phoebe (Miller) Chapman -- my 4th great-grandparents. I thought her first husband was John Fike but I may be wrong. Then too maybe it was John Franklin or some such thing. I do know that he died on July 22, 1886. I didn't have Lillian as a daughter! I do have these 2 children for Fike: 1 - Harvey C., born in PA in May, 1882 2 - Harry Wesley, born in PA in May, 1885; m. on 6 Nov 1906 to Sue Teresa Stanley Nancy Jane m/2 to William Hugh Shultz on 20 Jan 1887 at Eagle Rolling Mill (now Curtin Village), Centre Co, PA. He was born 4 Apr 1840 and died 7 Aug 1913, bur Eagle Cem, Boggs Twp. with his first wife Sarah. William and Nancy had 6 children that I know of: 1 - May Dorothy (b Feb 1888) m. 24 Mar 1913 to Willis W. Flack 2 - Alma (7 Jan 1890 - 29 Dec 1890), bur Eagle Cem. 3 - Anna E. (b 31 Oct 1891 in Milesburg; d 29 Aug 1958 in Bellefonte); m. 28 Oct 1912 in Hollidaysburg, Blair Co, PA, to Robert C. Hockenberry, her 1st cousin; they had 6 ch. and many descendants, on whom I have a lot more info if you're interested. 4 - Jacob (3 Apr 1893 - 5 Feb 1912), bur Trcziyulny Cem. 5 - Fred M. (25 Apr 1896 - 26 Oct 1918), bur Trcziyulny Cem. He was killed in WWI, as a result of which his mother became a Gold Star Mother. His gravestone erroneously says 1869 - 1918 rather than 1896 - 1918. 6 - Andrew G. L. (30 Mar 1899 - 4 Apr 1908), bur Eagle Cem. Nancy Jane m/3 to Matthew D. Garman, a widower, on 25 Apr 1916. He was b 1 Jun 1851 in Spring Creek, Benner Twp, Centre Co, PA; d 18 Apr 1934 at Boggs Twp. of Bright's disease; bur on the 20th in Meyer Cem, Benner Twp. They had no children. Her obituary in the CENTRE DEMOCRAT of 18 May 1939 reads: "Mrs. Nancy Jane Garman, widow of the late Matthew Garman, and a Gold Star Mother, died at her home near Milesburg at 4:15 o'clock Tuesday afternoon after a lingering illness with a complication of diseases. She was a daughter of George and Phoebe Chapman and was born in Spring township October 12, 1858, making her age at time of death 80 years, 7 months, and 4 days. She was thrice married, her first husband having been a Mr. Fike; her second, a Mr. Shultz, and her third, Matthew Garman. All preceded her to the grave. Surviving are these children: Mrs. Samuel Stere; Harvey Fike, Buffalo, N.Y.; Harry Fike, Flemington; Mrs. William Flick, Milesburg; Mrs. Robert Hockenberry, Curtin. Also surviving are these sisters and brother: Mrs. William McGuen, Brisbin; Mrs. Richard Snedden, Kylertown; Mrs. Ann Hockenberry [note: my 3rd great grandmother -- JKH], Bellefonte; Mrs. Susan Marvin, Iowa, and William Chapman, Beaverdale. Mrs. Garman became a Gold Star Mother when her son, Fred Shultz was killed in action in France. She was a member of Brooks-Doll Post American Legion Auxiliary, Bellefonte. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the home, with the Rev. H. E. Oakwood, assisted by the Rev. M. C. Piper, officiating. Interment will be made in the Trcziyulny cemetery, Milesburg." Can you add anything to the dau. Lillian and her family???????? It would be greatly appreciated if you could bring descendants down to the present day, or add anything I don't have on them. 3. Can someone tell me if it was necessary to have a son die in the service to become a Gold Star mother? My grandmother's sister (of Beaver Falls) was a Gold Star mother, but I didn't realize she had lost her son in the war. Thanks for the clarification, Sue ----- Original Message ----- From: <JKHouser84@aol.com> To: <PACENTRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 28, 2002 8:05 AM Subject: Re: [PACENTRE] CORRECTION: GARMAN AND FIKE > Jean, > > Jane Chapman Fike Shultz Garman was my great-great-great-great-aunt. > > I have a picture of her as a Gold Star Mother helping to dedicate the > Milesburg WWI monument in 1919. > > She was born Nancy Jane Chapman on Oct. 12, 1859, in Spring Twp., Centre Co., > PA, probably in the vicinity of Pleasant Gap.
