During the wars, a small flag with one blue star for each son or daughter in the service was hung in the window. If the service person was killed, then the blue star was replaced with a gold star. I still have the flag that was hung in the window during WWI when my father in law was in the Army. I think I will hang it in the window for my grandson who is in the Marines.
