an excellent and well set up website. however, there are few hits for my rare name ancestors, and I wonder where I might find earlier newspapers from Bellefonte, Centre and Spring? also, is it complete? there are pennsylvania ancestors and relatives of mine who fought/served in civilian possitions in the Civil War who aren't mentioned in the papers...
Hello Listers. The following Bellefonte newspapers were added recently to Penn State Libraries' online collection of Pennsylvania Civil War Era Newspapers: Central Press (issues from 1858-1868), Bellefonte National (issues from 1868), and Bellefonte Republican (issues from 1869). The collection previously included the Democratic Watchman. Check out the website at http://digitalnewspapers.libraries.psu.edu/Default/welcome.asp?skin=civilwar&QS=skin%3Dcivilwar. Lisa
Hi folks, I’m trying to find some info on an uncle I saw only a few times when I was very young. My father’s sister died when I was 4 years old and they did not have any children. The only thing I have in family records of him is the date of their marriage. I would like to fill in some blanks on my family tree. This is all I know for sure: My dad’s sister: Arlene Mary Edelman b. 8 Feb 1919, Altoona, Blair Co., PA d. 14 Dec 1949 at Mt. Alto Sanatorium, Cresson, PA married Wharton Hirst, 24 Aug 1937 in Fallsington, PA. My aunt is buried in our Edelman plot in Altoona, I have no other information on Wharton. I don’t know if he was born in, or that they had lived in, Fallsington or not. I thought my mom told me he was a college professor and/or football coach and they lived in State College, PA but I may be wrong about that. I have an exact place and date for a marriage record but have been unable to find a book or film with the image or transcription. Would anyone have access to something like this that could be scanned and emailed to me? I am helping a 90+ year old lady with DAR membership and this is the last item we need for her application. Daniel Gates and Elizabeth McDonald married 11 Sep 1886 at Julian by Rev. John Craig.[Centre Co. PA marriage license application & return #218] Thank you for any help or suggestions. Marilyn
I am trying to figure out two graves in Gray's Cemetery in Halfmoon, Centre, Pennsylvania. According to the book by the CCGS, "The Cemeteries of Halfmoon and Patton Townships", in Section 5 (Section 4 is by main gate, Sect 5 is to the east, or right) Row 3, grave 22, Ann E. Stine, d/o J. & E. d 14 Aug 1849, 2y 10m 10d.(calcs birth to 4 Oct 1846). Row 3, grave 23, Caroline Stine, d/o J. & E., d 30 Apr 1849, 2y 9m 16d. (calcs birth to 14 Jul 1846) Row 3, grave 24 & 25 contain Jonas Stine and Elizabeth, grandparents of the above 2 girls, their parents being buried in Row 13, grave 29. Now my question is, how can two girls be born 10 weeks apart? Can anyone verify this gravestone information for me or possibly pics? These girls are 3rd Cousins to me, but I want to know anyway! I am using AOL and having no problems with the CDT obits drop down under news. The obits come up straight away. The pictures are attached, and with his permission, here is what Chuck wrote about them: "One has Joseph in a group and he is in the upper left hand corner. The second is one of him in uniform that I have scanned and the quality is not great. It is in a small leather case which is hinged and has a small hook which can be used to close it! I have never seen one like it before. Both were identified by my mother who also supplied the only stories I know. "She said that Joseph was a flag bearer in the Civil War and that the flag he carried was on display in the rotunda of the capital in Harrisburg. She lived in Harrisburg in the early 1920's and went to see it then. She notes too that his name is on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg. "She talked about his daughter, Lydianne, telling her that she remembered him coming home from the war. She was "cooking potatoes for dinner and she went to meet him and they had not burnt when they got back to the house". What a memory! "I would be very interested in any verification of his status as flag bearer. I do not doubt my mother's memory - it was perfect right to her death at 88. Still I would like more info if anyone has it. I hope to get more involved with this line as well as others and greatly appreciate your help." Thanks for sharing, Chuck.
