Hello list - Since I hadn't seen anything about this resource on the list, I thought it might help some folks that might not know that you can access all of the Centre County Recorder's documents online. The link is: http://webia.co.centre.pa.us/login.asp Previously, you could view the indexes, but there were no documents available. Now, however, you can search, view, print, and save the actual deeds and other documents. Based on the searches I've done, the database appears to be complete - from county formation through now. It's not free, but it's a pretty good value. You purchase credits that allow you a certain number of clicks. A click appears to register each time you do a search, as well as each document link you click on within those search results. They also seem to have added a $25 sign up fee, although I may have paid that before when I signed up a couple of years ago- I can't remember. Another feature of this system that might be of use to some is the GIS mapping section. Probate, Prothonotary, and Tax office documents are also available, but they only include recent information - not the "historical " stuff we are interested in. Hopefully they will continue to add documents from those offices in the future. If you want to take a look at how it works, I have a brief tutorial on my blog at http://www.staatsofohio.com/?p=451 Chris Staats

"African American Genealogy" In February we will look at African American Genealogy in general, starting in Jamestown and looking at groups of documented individuals set free before 1800 in Virginia. We will identify differences and similarities between states when looking for records. Finally, we will apply what demographic information we know to the population in Centre County Pennsylvania connecting some of our Central Pennsylvania Families to some of the most prominent figures in African American History. African American Genealogy gives us a stereogram (Magic Eye(r)) view of our traditional history. If we relax our focus and slowly distance ourselves from the traditional knowledge a new image is visible which incorporates the original image as background making what appeared as flat now 3 dimensional. Nothing we see changes but the view is very different. Any new view of history holds clues for all of us to apply in our individual searches in genealogy. The more we know about whom we are searching for the easier it may be to break through barriers. We hope you can join us! Thursday, February 4, 2010 7:00 p.m. Foxdale Village Auditorium 500 E. This came to my e-mail and thought it might help someone. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jim <goquebec@free.fr> Date: Sat, Dec 26, 2009 at 6:05 PM Subject: Circa 1850 envelope to Balser WEBER of Howard, Pennsylvania from Burgwindheim, Bavaria To: JKHouser84@comcast.net Hi JKHouser84-I recently found a photo of an old envelope that Balser WEBER of Howard, Pennsylvania received from Burgwindheim, Bavaria in about 1850. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on Balser, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page) or click on the link below. I found your posting on RootsWeb that includes Balser WEBER. Is he one of your ancestors? If he is, the envelope may give you a clue as to where in Bavaria your ancestors are from. Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&view=details&Itemid=10&fabrik=5&rowid=772&fabrik_cursor=0&fabrik_total=1&tableid=5&lang=us The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable on the philgen website) and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists. Please let me know what you think. Thanks, Jim Miller

"Centre County Death Records" (pub 1997 by The Centre Co. Gen. Soc., pg 75) has record of death for Robert McNeal who died Sept. 22, 1896 of dropsy at Ray Island, according to the record. He is bur. in Bellefonte's Union Cemetery. This record shows that he was born at Lewistown. Where is/was Ray Island?? I presume it is in Pennsylvania . . . probably central PA. FYI - Robert McNeal m. Dear Saganfan- If you get an answer as to why Benedict Lucas was born in Ireland & his father was born & died in Maryland, I would be grateful to know it. There are many Lucas' married into my family tree. I don't have any primary sources on the life/death of either Benedict or his father. So I have assumed that either Benedict was not born in Ireland or his father was not born in Maryland. It would be nice to know which (if either) is correct. Thanks, Heather Bush hbush4@neo.rr.com

This whole thing is unbelievable! Bellefonte is losing its history faster than it can rebuild it. I love the place and am deeply saddened by all the fires. Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: Justin Houser To: PACENTRE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, December 23, 2009 4:56 PM Subject: [PACENTRE] Another Devastating Fire in Downtown Bellefonte Good afternoon, listmembers, Yesterday morning at about 1:30 a.m., the Cadillac Building, on the corner of South Allegheny and Bishop Streets in Bellefonte, caught fire. The papers today report that it may have been caused by the overturning of a candle onto an artificial Christmas tree in one of the apartments there. About 30 people have been left homeless -- the third floor was destroyed by fire, the roof collapsed, and the lower floors were heavily damaged by smoke and water. More can be read at www.centredaily.com. The building itself was built in 1916, designed by Anna Wagner Keichline, that eminent Bellefonte architect. It replaced a block of buildings owned by the late Edward Brown, a prominent Bellefonte figure of the 19th century. I have some old snapshots of those buildings being torn down to make way for the Cadillac Building. In a talk about Anna Keichline given last year, I commented, "She had to sue John P. Kelly in 1920 to recover some of the fees for the Cadillac Garage which she had built for him. Mr. Kelly went so far as to hire a team of Pittsburgh architects to inspect the work, anticipating using them as expert witnesses in the trial. Anna’s amiable and determined nature prevailed, however, and the parties settled out of court for $3300." At one time, my great-great-uncle, Willis Wion, sold Nash automobiles in this building. We have an old photograph of it when it was just built, which the Centre Daily Times used in today's article. My notes show, from the BELLEFONTE REPUBLICAN of 30 Oct 1924: "Wion's Garage Moved. -- Willis E. Wion, local Nash dealer, has leased the garage formerly occupied by R. N. VanIngen, in Cherry Alley, and will move in immediately. Since Deitrick & Dunlap purchased the building formerly occupied by Mr. Wion, at the corner of Bishop & Allegheny streets, the latter has had difficulty securing quarters large enough to handle his business, but the new home for Nash cars should prove amply large." We suspect that because it was built as a garage, the heavy concrete floors and durable brick structure prevented the fire from spreading too quickly. The buildings down the block are all limestone Georgian structures, nearly -- it not more than -- 200 years old, and if the fire spread to them it would likely have been very difficult to contain.
