I know there is a copy at the PA Room in Bellefonte - contact KWunderly@centrecountylibrary.org, and she may be able to do a look-up for a reasonable price, or even scan the needed pages for a few dollars. The Centre County Genealogical Society Presents: "NEVER GIVE UP" "Techniques and Tips for Solving Difficult Genealogical Research Problems" Every family history researcher encounters the proverbial "brick wall" at some point in time -- that ancestor beyond whom one simply cannot go. There are almost as many reasons for the "brick wall" as there are ancestors -- loss of records, migrations from unknown locations, change of name spelling, failure to keep specific types of records, and many more. In many cases, these problems can be overcome using some investigative techniques and an attentiveness to clues. Justin K. Houser will discuss techniques to overcome these problems in family history research, show examples of how following clues in obscure, but available records, have led to genealogical break-through. Following the principle of "never give up," Justin has unraveled some very difficult lineages and will show how to approach difficult research questions. Justin has been a member of the Centre County Genealogical Society since 1995, and has assisted with the cemetery project since that time. He serves as the chairperson of the Clinton County Genealogical Society Cemetery Project and has edited a CD-ROM index to 70,000 Centre County marriage records. He is the co-author of the book, The Confers: Seven Centuries of Family, as well as authoring or editing many other publications of genealogical and historical interest. His research has also resulted in a 290,000+ name (and growing) database of Central Pennsylvanians and their families on Rootsweb.com. Justin, a native of Bellefonte, is a graduate of the Schreyer Honors College of the Pennsylvania State University with a B.A. in Political Science and a minor in History, and is presently a third-year law student at the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, where he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Penn State Law Review. I haven't been active on the list for a while, so I thought I would post and ask if there are any new members researching descendents of James Watson an early settler who came to Centre County @ 1789. I also have Centre County connections to Agness Graham, Robert S. Watson, Matilda Williams, and Elizabeth Hess. I am also interested in corresponding with anyone connected to Weisel Turner who married Anna Watson. I would gladly receive and share information. Janet Watson
Ellen, If it was Washington, D.C., you could check the Washington Post microfilms around this date at Pattee Library and you should probably find his obit. Matlock Tate shows in 1900 in Virginia with his parents. In 1920 and 1930 he shows in Lima, Ohio. His WWI registration is also Ohio. Washington, Ohio is only 120 miles from Lima....but he could have died visiting his parents in Virginia(assuming they never moved). Or he may have relocated to Washington state. Ohio has very good 20th century death records, yet he doesn't show up on Ancestry search for Ohio. Bet you're really confused now!!! Ellen, This may be info you already have, but OneWorldTree at Ancestry.com shows Matlock Kephart Tate dying 5 Mar 1954 at Washington. That's as much as it says so I don't know if that means Washington state, Washington, D.C., Washington, Ohio, or what. His wife is named in said record as Mildred Markley, and it shows only the one child (as you named). Fred Houts
Matlock Kephart Tate was born 26 Sept 1885, probably in Centre or Clearfield County, and was the son of William Clark Tate (1863-1932) and Ada W. Kephart (1859-1928). William and Ada were living in Roanoke, Virginia in 1900, Cleveland, Ohio in 1910, 1920 and 1930. William died in Miami Florida, and was buried in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Ada died in Shaker Heights, Ohio and was also buried in Clearfield. I located Matlock Kephart Tate and his wife, Mildred in Lima, Allen County, Ohio in the 1920 and 1930 census, as well as the WWI draft registration. He was born 26 Sept 1885 in Pennsylvania, and married about 1917 to Mildred M. born about 1890 in Virginia. The 1930 census indicates they had one child, Jana B. aka Jane Beverlin Tate, born 11 Jan 1922 in Ohio (probably in Allen Co) and died (apparently unmarried) 28 Dec 1998 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I would like to know what happened to Matlock and Mildred Tate after 1930 as I have been unable to locate any records for either of them after 1930. Ellen
REMINDER: "African American Genealogy" In February we will look at African American Genealogy in general, starting in Jamestown and looking at groups of documented individuals set free before 1800 in Virginia. We will identify differences and similarities between states when looking for records. Finally, we will apply what demographic information we know to the population in Centre County Pennsylvania connecting some of our Central Pennsylvania Families to some of the most prominent figures in African American History. African American Genealogy gives us a stereogram (Magic Eye(r)) view of our traditional history. If we relax our focus and slowly distance ourselves from the traditional knowledge a new image is visible which incorporates the original image as background making what appeared as flat now 3 dimensional. Nothing we see changes but the view is very different. Any new view of history holds clues for all of us to apply in our individual searches in genealogy. The more we know about whom we are searching for the easier it may be to break through barriers. We hope you can join us! Thursday, February 4, 2010 7:00 p.m. Foxdale Village Auditorium 500 E. MERRYMAN DIES OF INJURIES Tyrone Man Succumbs to Injuries Sustained When Automobile Strikes Bridge at Vail and Overturns. Injuries which he suffered when his automobile struck the side of the concrete bridge at Vail proved fatal Saturday evening to Guy L. Merryman, aged 40, of 419 West Seventeenth street, Tyrone. Merryman died at 7.30 o'clock in the Philipsburg State Hospital where he was taken following his accident which occurred last Wednesday afternoon. He was in a semi-conscious condition at the hospital from the time of his admission. Apparently losing control of his car when he struck the side of the bridge, the machine plowed on for about a quarter of a mile and then plunged into a ditch and turned over five times in a field. The man was en route to his home from Bald Eagle at the time of the accident. The victim had suffered severe crush injuries, also a puncture of the lung and a number of lacerations. Patrolman B.V. Kilraine of the local detail planned to continue his investigation to determine the cause of the accident. It is believed that a front wheel of the man's car was torn off in the first impact. The deceased was born March 8, 1896, a son of William F. and Anne Elizabeth (Beck) Merryman. He was married Sept. 12, 1916, to Miss Carrie Waite and had been employed as a freight conductor by the Pennsylvania railroad. He was a member of the B. of R.T., of the Jr. O.U.A.M., the Moose and Tyrone lodge of the I.O.O.F. Surviving are his widow and three children: Mrs. P.K. Read of Barberton, O., Pauline and Sylvester Merryman, at home; two sisters, Mrs. I.L. Tuttle of Springfield, O.; Mrs. Carl Kinzle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and three grandchildren. The funeral is to be held at 2.30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home in charge of Rev. Joseph A. Speer of the First Presbyterian church assisted by Rev. John S. College. Interment will be made in Grandview cemetery. __________________________________ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
