Thanks, Justin. I appreciate your response to my message. I guess I will have to hire a professional genealogist to do my legwork up there. The three days we spent there just wasn't enough time at all! We accomplished a lot, but when I got home I had more and more questions. I realized I had only reached the tip of the iceberg! I figured that these old headstones (from the 1800's) would be well worn out by now. I looked through, as did some of the volunteers, through Spangler for Turner, specifically Vance Turner at that time, and there were no family members listed there that I knew of. It was confusing to me since all over the obits I have it is mentioned that my ancestors were buried in the cemeteries of the region (Milesburg, Curwensville, Philipsburg, etc.) and yet no mention of them was in Spangler. Now that I have learned that the Spanglers might have missed some graves I don't feel so confused. The libraries and historical associations in the area (Clearfield, Bellefonte and Philipsburg) were ALL so helpful and kind to us! These associations have been more than helpful even now after I have come home, when I asked them for some additional assistance (I can heartedly recommend anyone travelling to these towns to make use of their resources!). Again, thanks. Susan Btw, I envy you who live up there. Just as I remembered as a kid, it still is so beautiful. The air was fresh, clear, crisp.....I wish I could go back again! Susan >> ===================== I have just ck'd Mary Belle Lontz's compilation of Centre County Tombstone Inscriptions which she "published" in 1984. My understanding is that it is, basically, it is a "pirated" record of the Spangler Collection at the Centre County Library in Bellefonte and includes all the cemetery records that the Spanglers had collected and compiled up to their deaths. This record, then, should certainly include the Turner deaths you mentioned (above). However, I was unable to find them listed in any Centre County cemetery in the Lontz work. Just for the record, Ms. Lontz's work leaves much to be desired but can still be a helpful tool at times. The new CC cemetery lists as being published by the CCGS are a much-needed and wonderful asset for all of us to use. Boggs Township (which includes Milesburg) has not yet been published. Part of it is cleaned up, but as I walked around the clean part, I glanced into the woods and saw more stones. Stones were broken, toppled or moved, trees, ivy poison, fox grapevines, wild roses, other vining plants, wild tiger lilies, etc. Your typical "abandoned" cemetery. I struggled to get to some of the graves and write down some names, but spotted groundhog holes scattered throughout (not to mention snake dens). I tried to get back in the woods, but it was impossible due to the uneven terrain. Some whole "lots" are sunk two feet or more and I couldn't afford a broken leg or worse because I was alone, so I had to give up and be happy with what I did copy. I stopped at the house next to this cemetery. The woman there told me she has been trying to get the church to take care of it for years. It is NOT an abandoned cemetery. I asked her who has been doing what little trimming that is done. She has been doing it herself, but not without a fight from the church! A few years ago, she had gotten help from a civic group and from the county prison to do what is now open and clean, but there is so much more to do. The church chased those people away! She states the pastor and the elder of the church as the nastiest people she has ever tried to reason with. I told her I would help her because she can't do it alone, but she states they even carry on about her taking care of the part that has been cleaned up. She said she has gone through so many weedwackers and has fallen at least twice over hidden stones, leaving some very large bruises. She goes to all the township meetings asking for something to be done, but is not getting anywhere. She also said someone from Sunbury was there two days ago and is going to write a letter to the church. I thanked her for her time and told her my offer still stands to help, and left. She deserves a big hand for trying to do this herself. When I came home, I checked my reference books to see if this cemetery has been compiled. Sure enough, Jean Dellock did it back in 1994. One the last page of her compilation, she writes: "When I originally started this cemetery, I was under the impression that it was abandoned, and wrote a letter to the Editor of a local newspaper. I wish you could have seen the reply that was returned in the same newspaper. It sizzled! I did, however discover that the cemetery does belong to the Methodist Church of Minersville, and it looks as if there are lots marked off for sale on the top, so it is still active." Now I'm really furious since this "abandonment" has gone on for too long. It's time to get it cleaned up. I am asking that you all help in a letter writing campaign to the Pottsville Republican, Branch Township Supervisors, and/or the church itself. (Address to follow in another email since I'm not sure if I have the right one). The church, its pastor, and its elder don't seem to care what happens to this cemetery, and it's shocking that a person of God would view this cemetery so lightly. There is supposedly even a colonel buried there, along with others who fought in the CW. There should be respect for this cemetery and those buried there. I'm hoping with pressure, this cemetery will get the care it deserves. Some surnames in this cemetery are: Bottom section - PRICE(1), JAMES (13), EDMUNDS (3), KRAMER (4),STRAUB (3), BOONE (1), CONFAIR, CLEMENS (1). Top section - DITZEL (2-homemade stone but only dates), GRIFFITHS, MEREDITY, ROBERTS, BUCHANAN, WILLIAMS, EDWARDS, BOYER, KHOLER, ALEXIS (2), VITKAUSKA, PHILLIPS, KENDALL, ENTERLINE (2) , REBUCK(4), GILLESPIE (4), ELTRINGHAM (1), TANNER(2). Hi, I'm new to the list. Is anyone researching the surname RAUCH ? My family came from Pennsylvania in 1849 to Michigan. In my research I've discovered that the Rauch's lived in seven different counties in Pennsylvania: Centre, Juniata, Perry, Dauphin, Snyder, Union and Northumberland. I suspect I'll add to this list. The story goes that John Rauch (the father) died in 1848 in Junianta County. His wife and 4 of his 5 adult sons moved to Michigan. Upon moving to Michigan they changed the spelling of their name to ROUGH. I'm trying to find information about the Rauch's prior to their moving to Michigan. I'm also trying to find information about the one son who remained in Pennsylvania, Henry Rauch. I do not know where they were born, I just know that they moved within the 7 county area and that in 1849 they left Juniata County. This is what I know.... John Rauch, b about 1773-1775, died 1848 in Juniata County. He married Margaret Walmer about 1795/1796. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter that I know of. John Rauch/Rough, b Feb 28 , 1797, d Jan 1, 1892, married Elizabeth Swartz about 1819-1825. Jacob Rauch/Rough, b about 1798 Henry Rauch/Rough - stayed in Pennsylvania David Rauch/Rough - b about 1807 George Rauch/Rough - b about 1812 Catherina Rauch/Rough - b about 1819 - don't know if died or stayed in Penn. No mention of her. No records in Michigan for her. I'm sorry this is so long, but if you can help, I would most certainly appreciate it. Thanks.....Sue at ssshipmack@aol.com

When cleaning up files on puter, I open and peruse before deleting. Often I find information or geds that I've saved and for one reason or another haven't had time to pursue. Such is the case with one re TREASTER ~ YOUNG which I opened the other day. Lo and behold it has my ggram Catherine TREASTER b, 1816, Potter Tsp., Centre County. She is listed as the daughter of George TREASTER b. 1780, Northumberland Tsp. and Elizabeth YOUNG b. 1786, Norhampton Co. These pages list 12 children for George and Elizabeth TREASTER and many grandchildren. Does anyone have information on parents and/or sibs for either George TREASTER or Elizabeth YOUNG?
