    1. [PACENTRE] ANDREW & WILLIAM GROVE
    2. Nancy Lorz
    3. I have the pension & military records of CPL Andrew P. GROVE & Capt. William P. Grove. They were brothers, both sons of Henry and Margaret (Row) Grove. Both served in the 45th Regt. Co. A enrolled at Centre Co. PA. William died 21 Sept 1862 at Middletown MD. of wounds rec'd at South Mountain, & Andrew died in Andersonville Prison 1 Nov 1864. Their mother applied for pension because her husband Henry, was disabled and unable to earn a living. In order for her to prove this, she sent letters which the boys had written her concerning money matters. There are copies of the letters with the pension records. On the 1860 census for Howard township, Centre Co are listed: Henry Grove age 32 Black Smith born PA Margaret Grove 33 " " Lydia Grove 19 " " Sarah Grove 16 " " Anna Grove 15 " " Rebecca Grove 13 " " Andrew Grove 18 " " William Grove 23 " " There was another brother, Henry B. Grove, who was obviously out of the household at the time. Some of the letters were addressed to him. According to Andrew's record, he was born in Clinton Co, but residing in Centre Co. If anyone has any further knowledge about this family, please let me know. I'm wondering if there is a connection to my Grove family of Huntingdon. Many of the names are the same. TIA Nance

    1. [PACENTRE] Oops!! Forgive me. The English Site is here
    2. UK Surnames Web Site The UK Surnames Web Site is an extension of the already established and successful Cumbria Surnames Site. As a result of that success and acquiring the resources to do so, we have extended the site to cover the whole of the United Kingdom including a specific section for Shropshire The site allows users to instantly post their own surname interests (no need to wait for site admin to update), manage their own entries and contact others researching names they are interested in through forms on the site The main aim of the expansion is to provide a "one stop shop" for surname contacts whilst still reducing the burden of searching by keeping them grouped by county or region. If you are interested in posting or browsing, please visit us at www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.mv Thank you Malcolm Hills associates@btinternet.com NEW FEATURE: It is now possible to search for a particular surname across the entire site, not just by county as before

    1. [PACENTRE] Trip to Centre Co.
    2. Just got back from our trip. Centre County is Beautiful. Spent our time in Gregg, Miles, Marion, Walker and Howard Twps. Bellefonte (pronounced Bellfont, I was corrected) is a wonderfull small town that hasn't been commercialized. Many beautiful old homes and churches. We stayed at a B&B called the Garrett. The Library is a Gem amongst all this beauty. I had seen the "Spangler Collection" mentioned and used as a source on several occassions. The Spanglers must have spent a life time on this work. It is several collections of research. Not your typical family histories full of faulty rememberances. There are 175 books of Cemetery listings, Church Records, Civil proceedings etc. There are another set of books containing Newspaper clippings and a basement full of thier notes. A card file at the library provides a reference to all the surnames. The library is full of other research material too, and staffed by knowledgeable and helpfull people. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] DOLAN surname, ca. 1850--Mary, Martin, Thomas
    2. Marybeth, First off, I urge you to go to our Centre Co. GenWeb site (www.rootsweb.com/~pacentre/centre.htm) and go to Naturalizations. Follow the links to the naturalization imaging project. There you may find Martin Dolan's naturalization paperwork which may state when and where he came to America. As far as churches go, try St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop St., Bellefonte, PA 16823. They are very helpful and have records going back to the 1830s. The early records have all been published in the volumes Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania (a 5 volume set) which is probably available through Interlibrary loan. There is a copy in the Centre County Library if you wish to contact them. The email is: Paroom@naccess.net I know of no oil drilling in our county. The first oil well was in 1859 in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania and it is today a historic site. There are many Dolans buried in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery. 1. [PACENTRE] DOLAN surname, ca. 1850--Mary, Martin, Thomas
    2. Hello, I am a new subscriber and am searching for information about my second greatgrandmother, Mary DOLAN, b. 1825 County Galway, Ireland; md. Patrick KELLY (no dates known); d. 1890 Allegheny City, Allegheny Co., PA; buried St. Mary's cemetery, Lawrenceville, Allegheny Co., PA. Mary had two brothers, Martin DOLAN (1822, Ireland--1872, Fayette Co., PA) md. to Ida UNKNOWN. Martin served as a Captain of Co. F, 148th PA Infantry in the Civil War. I have recently been supplied information that indicates Martin lived in Centre Co., before migrating west to Fayette Co., PA. Mary's second brother was Thomas DOLAN md. to Julia KANE. I have the following questions. 1.) If Mary and her brothers, Martin and Thomas left Ireland, either before or after the "Famine", and settled in Centre Co., would they have debarked at the Port of Philadelphia, or could they possibly have come through New York, or even Canada? 2.) What are the names of Catholic churches, ca. 1850 in Centre Co., that would have marriage or baptism records for this time period? Specifically searching for a baptism for my greatgrandmother, Mary Ann KELLY, dau of Mary DOLAN and Patrick KELLY. 3.) Reportedly the DOLAN brothers were involved in oil drilling in the Centre Co., area. Does anyone have any information or sources that might list their names? Thank you very much for your time. 1. [PACENTRE] FRIEL/O'FRIEL
    2. Marge Wilcox
    3. Hi all: Is there anyone on the list who is researching the above. I know there was a Michael Friel, wife Margaret and family in Boggs Twp in 1880. My ancestor, Mary Elizabeth Friel (Polly) married Jacob Shaner and they lived in Boggs Twp in 1840-1870. Although this Michael was born ca 1827 and my Mary E. was born ca 1804, could they be related?? Michael's oldest son was Cornelius, and Jacob and Mary named their first son Cornelius. It appears that Michael was born in PA, as were his parents so a relationship is possible. Michael and Margaret are buried in Askey Cem., Snowshoe Twp. Mary is one of my stone walls and any hint might help! Marge Wilcox, Brighton, MI Rootsweb Sponsor Plus

    2. Sue, I do not know of any such listing compiled for Centre County. We do have the Spangler listing, taken at that time. Mrs. Spangler went around from 1927 to 1948, more or less, and recorded the gravestone inscriptions in many of our county's cemeteries. Her records are very helpful today. 3. The following appeared recently in Rootsweb Review: WPA CEMETERY LISTINGS AND INDEXES QUESTION: I believe I heard sometime back that a federal agency (WPA) did a census to cemeteries during the 1930s but I have had no luck finding where these records may be filed or if they can be accessed on line. Do you have any information? Duane Peterson ANSWER: During the Depression, the U.S. government funded the creation of cemetery listings and indexes by the Historical Records Survey division of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). Many of these were later published by others, including local genealogical and historical societies, while other results of this effort remain as card indexes, which are deposited at state and local archives and libraries. Does anyone know whether such index cards exist for Centre County? If so, where would they be located, and which cemeteries were transcribed? Thanks, Sue Renkert
