    1. Marge Wilcox? - Virus Alert - [PACENTRE] Mies/Meese/Mease/ of Centre Co.
    2. Tim Mease
    3. I received a response from someone on this list several days ago that contained a virus "WORM_BADTRANS.B". I had to delete the email without opening it, losing both the message and email address. I believe the person's name was Marge Wilcox although I'm not sure of the person's last name. If you are this person, could you please resend the message? (After cleaning up the virus problem of course ;.) Tm Mease

    1. [PACENTRE] Re-sending Virus-infected Message
    2. Sue Renkert
    3. Tim and other list members, I have seen several messages similar to this one lately, so I thought it might be a good idea to comment. When we receive a virus-infected message from someone, it is not that the person is sending a message that becomes infected with the virus. It is the virus itself that sends the message. There IS no message from the person. I think it's important to clarify this fact., because if we think we will be receiving a legitimate message from the person, we are more likely to open a subsequent message from the same person. Have a good day, all. And remember what have now become the first two rules of genealogy: 1. Update your antivirus regularly. 2. NEVER open an attachment unless you are absolutely certain what it is! 3. Cathy, This is wonderful information! I have been searching and searching for information on the Phippses of Centre County. I have lots of Phipps information, but the Centre County line has been elusive. I believe that David had a sister Elizabeth, who was my ancestor. There isn't anything in that Bible about an Elizabeth is there? That would be too good to be true! Let me dust off my Phipps notes and get back to you. 1. [PACENTRE] Another Letter
    2. Here is the next chapter in the saga. I will send some more out at a later date. Enjoy! Port Royal Bay Point, Dec 15 / 61 2:00(?) Dear Brother I have received no letter from you since we left Camp Casey M D. It is not my turn to write but I want to know whether you got that jink, and I am also anxious to heare from you and Mother. We were paid at Fortress Monroe, Va. and left the next day for this place. But before I proceede further. When we were payed off, Our Chaplain Mr. Gibson went home, taking with him a vast amount of Soldiers Money. Withe him Mart & I sent $50, $25.00 each enclosed in a letter. He said he would leave it in the Bank or drop it in the Post Office, but I suppose you have received it before this time. On the morning that we left F. M. I sent a letter [corner of page burned off] Whiteman who was going home to Howard for Mother with one dollar enclosed. I suppose it has also come to hand. Backed to you, if so, tell Mother to answer it and will send some jink in every reply. Well now for the voyage. Part of our Regt. embarked on the Steam & Sail Ship Illinois, and the rest of the Regt. on the Cosmopolitan. We had a beautiful voyage, out of land sight for three days and nights. The sea was very calm all the time during our voyage rendered the time very pleasant. We saw a great many large fish jumping out of the water, and any amount of Sea Hogs they would come in squads toward the vessel clearing themselves out of the water every jump. On comming in from sea to P R the ship ran aground of a sand bar. it was fortunate for the vessel, that no storm arose for a storm then would have caused a reck. A few signals of distress were sent up (sky rockets) and in a short time [corner of page burned off] seen approaching us from the [burn] was about ten o'clock at night and we did not get loose untill morning. A feate looks very nice after night with red lamps ung on the mast rigging. We were frequently halted by our Gun boats. This is done by fireing a blank. When the vessel thus halted must lay untill an officer of the Gun boats come above and examines to his own satisfaction if C.S. ship she must be captured or sunk if U.S. The sailors give three cheers and away she goes. Our Regt. is now divided the old Co C. and five companies are on Otter Island about forty miles distant, and the rest of us are holding Forts, Mud & Beauregard Bay Point Island. The I. is six miles long. Part is sandy barren, and the other part is Frucktiferous. This Island was taken from the Rebbels on the 7th of Nov. They fled in great hast to the other side of the Island and escaped on Boats, leaving all behind [burn marks in corner of page] ons, field pieces and [burn] pork and numerous other valueable articles in short they left all they had. We are now Quartering in the Houses very comfortably indeed. We have just a little of the nicest kind of times, dont drill at all and the weather is warm and pleasant we can go without coats to warm some days. We go out wherever we want on a Forging expedition to the adjacent Island (S.S. Helena), which abounds with game. We take anything we want such as chickens, geese, Hogs, cattle, horses, Sweet potatoes &c. The citizens have all gone, no one to take care of the property except the slaves, they are as dum as hogs, we make htem bring the good things to us, dat we will, massah! There are a great many palmetto trees: The most beautiful tree I ever saw. O stars and nice sea shells we find along the shore. We enjoy the best kind of health it is very healthy the sea breeze and we bathe in the salt water frequently. As this is the third letter to you, without a reply, I shall close and tell the rest the next time. Write directly and tell all teh particulars what Mother thinks of the times. What kind of weather and all these kind of things. No more at present but regards >From the Boys Jim & Mart. Just now the darned candle caught the paper. Please excuse my lazyness to write smoth. F mae address on scrap & the [last?] corners of my letter. Private: You may expect to heare of Charleston being taken soon. The fleet is on the way down. ==== Justin Justin Kirk Houser Genealogist/Researcher of Central PA and Beyond Main Lines: Houser, Breon, Shawley, Ranio/Hrynio (and others) President, BAHS Class of 2003 Student Representative, BASD Board of Education Listowner, PACENTRE-L@Rootsweb.com Historian, Schürch Association of North America (specialty Central PA lines) Member, Valley View United Methodist Church "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature"

    1. [PACENTRE] The Glenn Story in Letters
    2. Good evening, list, I've finally gotten around to complete the letters. I will send them out piecemeal so that you all have time to enjoy them. They are quite remarkable. (To friends on the Clearfield list: I have just come across some Civil War era letters sent to me by Brenda Wisbey. They are applicable to both Centre and Clearfield County, and thus are sent to both lists.) Here is what I know about the parties in the letters, to set the stage: The mother of the family was Jane (Steele) Glenn, born 4 Feb 1806, the widow of Robert Glenn, who died in Clearfield County, PA, on 4 May 1841, and mother of four children, John Wesley Glenn, James H. Glenn and Martin S. Glenn (twins, born 1839), and a daughter, Hannah. At the outbreak of the war she was a poor lady living in Millheim, Centre County, with her son John Wesley and his family. John Wesley Glenn, the oldest brother, was born on 26 Mar 1836 and was consequently a young man at the outbreak of the war. In 1860 he had become married to Susanna Houser, a young maiden from Houserville, PA. It was to him that most of the letters were addressed. On 28 Nov 1861, he and his wife became the parents of a son, named Elmer Ellsworth after the man considered the first casualty of the War. This son, referred to as Col. Ellsworth in the letters, was apparently affectionately doted upon by his uncles in the letters. The twin boys, Martin "Mart" S. and James H., were born September 8th, 1839 in Clearfield County, PA. Records indicate that Martin went to work as early as 1854 in the iron works in order to support his widowed mother (his father having died before his second birthday). Together, on 20 May 1861, they enlisted in Co. A, 45th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, under the direction of Col. John I. Curtin. The company was recruiting in Milesburg, Centre County. Records indicate that some of the letters were lost and thus this is not a complete trail of correspondence, but is enough to serve as evidence of the service and thoughts of two of our "Centre County boys," and their concern for their Mother, Brother, and family. As their sister Hannah is omitted in the letters, one can only assume that she died prior to the War. Some of the terms are not readily understood, perhaps; particularly, some of the military engagements briefly described could be written about in volumes. To anyone having insight on these battles or events, I would most appreciate it if you'd share it with me and the list. Without further adieu, we will take you back 140 years now (almost to the day!) to December 5th, 1861, at Fortress Monroe, where the boys James and Mart had just received their first paycheck . . . Fortress Monroe Dec 5th / 61 Dear Brother We were payed off yesterday and I enclose $50 fifty dollars of United States money which is better than gold from the fact it draws Interest $25 of which is mine and $25 Marts. We were paid from the time the Geovernor your Capt C. his com from the 16th of August. We will be payed of again on the first of Jan. Then we can send $50 more home. The money we expect you to use if mother needs any let her have it. But I have a some money yet and will send her some every time I write. So if the letter be lost it wont be much lost. We will continue to send you our money as long as we stay in the service and all we ask of you is to use the money, and when we get home for to have it in such a shape so that we can get it aready. And start up farming stronger than ever. We mean to settle down if we ever get home and if not the money is ures and mothers. I send the money with our old Mr. Gibson, Rev, our Chaplain, who is going home. I am in an awful hurry for we are going to leave this place in three or four hours when we land I shall write and tell you where it is. Write soon your letters will be forwarded. No more. Yours, J H Glenn ===== MORE TO FOLLOW IN FUTURE EMAILS . . . STAY TUNED. 1. [PACENTRE] Civil War Letters
    2. Good evening, listers, I intend to start a series of letters to the list that were written long ago. These were very kindly provided to me by Brenda Wisbey, a descendant of those involved, who obtained them through writing for a pension file which contained them. I'll try and set the story here for you a little bit. Robert and Jane (Steele) Glenn were married 11 October 1832 at Julian, Huston Twp., Centre Co., PA. They had three sons, John Wesley Glenn, Martin S. Glenn, and James Glenn; the last two were twins. The father, Robert, died in 1841 while the family were living in Clearfield County. His widow and children moved back to Centre County, settling near Millheim, where they were residing when the War broke out. Martin Glenn became a Private in Company A, 45th Pennsylvania Volunteers. His brother, James, also joined up. The following emails reflect correspondence that came out of that service. Enjoy. 2. Tim Mease
    3. Hi All, I am trying to find the parents of John Meese (ca. 1801-1855) m. Mary Neece (1806-1877). John seems connected in various ways to Centre County but I am unable to link him to anyone. All I have are a few clues: 1. In the 1830 census, he appears in Hepburn Twp. Lycoming Co. Interesting enough, Michael Meese (1777-1843) from Centre Co. is in the neighboring Loyalsock Twp. Michael who was a resident of Centre since about 1800 seems to have moved by the 1830 census. By the 1840 census, he is back in Centre again. The other interesting thing is that my ancestor John's wife Mary, was from Loyalsock. This could all be coincidence of course. 2. In the 1840 Census, my ancestor John is living in Half Moon Twp. Centre Co. He moves back to Lycoming for a few years and then on to Clearfield Co. about 1845. 3. The Meases in Centre County were sent there to manage and develop the land owned by their father Johan Gerhard Mies (1746- 1805). I suspect Johan Gerhard purchased the land as a venture for development. What is interesting is that this is what my ancestor John seemed to do - buy large pieces of land, cut off the timber and sell it. They would also farm the land as it was being developed. I suspect my ancestor is related in some way to the Centre Co. Meases - possibly a nephew to Johan Gerhard. Anyone have any info on the Centre Co. Meases? Thanks Tim Mease

Since I do not wish to jeopardize all my work, I will be unsubscribing at this time. Those interested in contacting me, may do so at nearhoof@nb.net Please check you computer for viruses first.
