Hi list, Found this on the clinton Co Pa Obit board, I had posted it for someone else, amazing how one can forget. This confirms "Franklin Bechdel" as father, and the step-sisters. Lock Haven Express 9/12/1952 Mrs. Catherine E Summerson 86, widow of Joseph R Summerson, for many years a resident of Leidy and Cross Forks, where the family had a farm, died yesterday at 11:30 p.m. in the Private Hospital. She had been ill fro six years, suffering from the complications of old age. Mrs. Summersons immediate survivors number more than 50. They include a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ardner, 608 East Main Street, Lock Haven, with whom she has lived with for six years, and these additional children, Mrs. Mary Summerson, Renovo; Mrs Nancy Daugherty, Newark, New York; Mrs. Alice Smith and Mrs. Daisy Henderson, both of Lock Haven; and Herbert Summerson, Niagra Falls. A sister Mrs. Annie Walters lives in Renovo, and three half sisters are Mrs. Susie Calhoun, Hammersley Fork; Mrs Margaret Miller, Sinnemahoning; and Mrs. Alice Evans, Mobile, Ala. There are 16 grandchildren, 26 great grand children and six great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Summerson was born in Centre County, a daughter of the late Franklin! and Nancy Boozer Bechdel. During the latter part of her life, before she came to Lock Haven, she lived at Cross Fork with a son Henry B., who died five years ago. She attended the E. Main St. Methodist Church in this city.

Does anyone have an opinion on using on-line census imaging services vs. purchasing a census cd? I have used the former at quite an expense only to discover that in the case of certain counties the information is either incomplete or in some cases whole townships are missing. I am now thinking of purchasing census cds from Heritage Quest. I hesitate to name the on-line subscription service for legal reasons, but needless to say, data integrity is everything in genealogy research and when you are doing a surname search of an entire county -- line by line --and then find that pages or entire townships are missing, it becomes very deflating. Are there any other reputable census cd companies out there? I would like to hear from other people on this list as to what they use. Hi Justin and List. That Franklin sure fits the dates. From what I gather, not having an exact birth date for him, but obit reveals be was bn ca 1839. The one I need I canot find on the 1860/1870 census of Potter Twp. although he was to have been born in Centre Hall. 1860 census Potter twp, family 496 Has John Boozer with wife Catherine(Nee Keller) and 9 children with Nancy age 18. Then 1870 Potter twp, famly 29 shows Katherine (nee Keller) Boozer age 55 no husband listed(he died in 1866) and Nancy Bechtol (no husband listed) age 29 and three children, Katherine, Anna, David. If he did go to Min. he must have had created another family there. I have not tried the 1850 census for that area (Centre Hall) as we do not have it at the Ross Lib. . Franklin should be with his family unit in 1850. Thanks Everyone! Many years ago, my mother's cousin sent her the following information. She had been researching the Bechdel family as we are descendants of David and Christina Working Bechdel. I don't know if this will help but may be clues for Franklin. Listed among the ten children of David and Christina Working Bechdel is: "Franklin Bechdel, born in 1840. Regarding him, we have no further certain information. So far, it has been impossible to ascertain whether or not he was the same "Frank Bechdel" who lived in Belleplain, Minnesota, in the latter 1890's or early 1900's. Elderly descendants of the Working brothers recall hearing their parents speak of visiting such a person, related to them, in their youths. It's possible that this relative was Franklin, the son of Christina Working Bechdel." Judy
Hi List I am hoping that somebody can help me out with these people. I am looking for any info on these names RUBEN BARE married LEAH PYLE/ PILE abt 1850 DAVID PYLE/PILE married ELIZABETH ? early 1800s they lived in Ferguson Twp. ANNIE E. BARE/BAIR born in Gatesburg married THOMAS J PARKS 1873 Thank you in advance Donna
Stacey, Yes, I do have the obituary you speak of. His obituary in the "Centre Democrat" of Thu. 8 Dec 1904 read: "Frank Bechdel died very suddenly of heart failure at Howard. He was aged 65 years and is survived by seven daughters who live in Minnesota; one sister, Mrs. Levi Rupert of Howard township, also survives. Interment was made in the Disciple graveyard." This certainly seems like he had ties to Minnesota. He perhaps came back here to die. His death record is on file in Centre County, PA. It reads: Centre Co., PA Death Records: F. L. Bechdel, male, 64, single, bp Liberty Twp, farmer, d 27 Nov 1904 in Howard Boro of consumption, interment at Blanchard. Now, "single" was often used in these records to denote one whose spouse had passed away, or perhaps divorced. Thus, he probably at one point was married, and had seven daughters. It is interesting that the death record says he died of consumption (tuberculosis), which is a long-term, wasting disease of the lungs, whereas the newspaper said he died suddenly of a heart attack. I will be back with more info after I install my 1880 census on this computer and consult that also. Hi David C. Bechdel and Christina Workinger Bechdel are my family. Justin, do you have a copy of the obit for Franklin?? I know nothing about him except what Zetty wrote. " Franklin Bechdel, born in 1840. Regarding him we have no further definite information. So far, it has been impossible to ascertain whether or not he was the same "Frank Bechdel" who lived in Belleplaine, Minnesota in the late 1890's. Elderly descendants of the Working family recall hearing their parents speak of visiting such a person, in their youths. It is possible that this relative was Franklin, son the son of Christina Working Bechdel." Zetty, page 23 in the "newer" addition featuring the original Zetty and the additions by Eleanor Delacour 1981. Happy New Year! :0) Stacey
Hello all, I wonder whether this Franklin Bechdel is the same man as Franklin L. Bechdel, born 1839 in Liberty Twp., Centre Co., PA, and died 27 Nov 1904 in Howard, Centre Co., PA? His obit stated he left a wife and seven children; it neglected to name them, however. He was a son of David C. and Christina (Workinger) Bechdel. Doris, Since you say he was born in Huntingdon County in 1792 have you checked the tax records of Huntingdon County for that year to see if there are any Cox living in Huntingdon County? Or perhaps the 1790 and 1800 census can help you meet that same need. The tax lists are, I believe, on file in the Huntingdon County Historical Society in Huntingdon, PA, and there are copies at the Blair County Genealogical Society in Hollidaysburg, PA. Perhaps this will give you some leads. You may then want to search the deeds and wills for any evidence that would relate Cox names in the area to your Marshall, or at least put them in the same area, and establish a link via circumstantial evidence. Hope this helps. I am sorry that I don't have anything new to add to your enlightenment on these people except to tell you that I am working on the SHUEY family (I have double Shuey ancestry). I can tell you that Emanuel Shuey was born 28 Sep 1863 in Centre County, PA, a son of John C. and Ellen C. (Wise) Shuey. I also had in my notes (as do you) that Emanuel and Jane (Zettle) Shuey resided at Dalton, Illinois. I have nothing further. Noting that you reside at Boalsburg, I might add that Ellen (Wise) Shuey is buried there with grave marker apparently only indicating 1842-1919. I have been stymied in all efforts to obtain a death certificate or an obituary for her. Her husband is buried at Shiloh in College Township. If you can add anything for me on this branch of the family, I'd be ever so appreciative. I am a Centre County native, having been born at Lemont and reared (for the most part) at Houserville. Have lived here in the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis since Dec. 1966. Thanks for anything further that you can add. Fred Houts, Brooklyn Center MN
