    1. [PACENTRE] The Destruction of the Reichard Cemetery, Millheim Borough
    2. Grace, Yes, it was very, very wrong indeed. I'll go into a little more detail to relate the story as best I can. As near as I can tell, Joseph Reichard and his father, Joseph Reichard Sr., were the original owners of the land. They were likely members of the United Brethren in Christ Church. Today that denomination is merged into the United Methodist Church (our church was a U.B. church prior to mergers in 1946 and 1968 that re-named us a United Methodist Church). The Reichards very generously donated some land on the edge of their property for the use of folks in the community, and United Brethren in particular, who might wish to be buried there. Certainly most of the Reichards were buried there, including Joseph Sr., who died in 1813. It is said that the Rev. Adam Noonan, who was one of the most influential preachers in the United Brethren Church, was buried there also. Now, the United Brethren influence in and around Millheim died out in the 1860s or so. I doubt that the cemetery was used much after the 1870s. It just kind of sat there, along the road on top the hill, bordered on all three sides by farmland. There were something like 30 graves in the plot. I have talked to an old man in the area, and he filled in the rest of the story. Around 1945 or so, a Mr. Yearick bought what had been the old Reichard farm. Apparently when he bought it, if there had been any reservation in the deeds prior stating the cemetery was not part of the farm, it wasn't copied into his deed. It may be that the Reichards never officially gave the cemetery land away, so it always remained a part of that farm. At any rate, Mr. Yearick desired to expand his farm, and to do so, he had to get rid of the old United Brethren burial plot along the road. He pulled out all the tombstones and stacked them up in a pile along the road, on the edge of the plot. The old man I talked to said that Mr. Yearick could not wrest one stone out of the ground; it was too deeply imbedded. That was a simple sandstone with the initials "A. M. S." scratched into it. It remains there today. Like the man who desired to build his barns bigger in the Bible, Mr. Yearick took sick and died in 1951 or 1952, when he was still a fairly young man. By then, however, the damage had been done. People who could use the stones as stepping-stones in a walkway, or worse yet, broken up for the base of cement porches or sidewalks, gradually hauled them away, one by one. The old man recalls that he stepped out of his home one day and looked down the alley to see two teenage girls hauling away the last headstone. He couldn't catch up to them by the time they disappeared from sight. The base of that stone, complete with the stone cutter's name, is the other remaining monument in the cemetery. That last stone was removed some time around 1959. And thus one of the oldest cemeteries in the region was destroyed, and some history was lost forever. Sad, isn't it? 1. Re: [PACENTRE] family of Harrison KLINE
    2. Sara, I have a Harrison G. KLINE who might fit your bill. He was a son of George and Elizabeth (FETTEROLF) KLINE, who lived in the now-gone village of Lauvertown, Benner Township, Centre Co., PA. According to his mother's obit, in 1898, he was living in Bellefonte. I have noted that his obituary is in the CENTRE DEMOCRAT of 17 Jan 1957 but wonder whether this is the same man as he would have been extremely old by then. This man's parents were born in 1819 and 1820, respectively. It could be him, if he lived into his 90s. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Mt Olivet Cemetery
    2. Sue, Penn Township, Centre County, was formed in 1844 from parts of Gregg and Haines Townships. It exists in the southeastern part of the county. The borough of Millheim, which is surrounded by Penn, was detached from Penn Township and made its own borough at January sessions, 1879. Another village in Penn Township is Coburn. The cemeteries in Penn Township are Paradise Cemetery (formerly an Evangelical cemetery, but the church has been torn down), Fairview West Cemetery (opened about 1997 because the Fairview Cemetery in Millheim was getting filled up), and the Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, on the line with Gregg Township. The Borough of Millheim contains the old Union Cemetery, and Fairview Cemetery. Most of the residents of Penn Twp. and Millheim were buried in these places. Fairview Cemetery is still active; Union is not, but is quite well maintained. The Reichard United Brethren Cemetery once existed on a hill above Millheim. Around the 1940s the farmer who owned it took off all the tombstones and residents carried most of them away. I was up to the site in 1997 and discovered only two gravestones on the plot, most of which was plowed up for a field. It was founded around the year 1800. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Mt Olivet Cemetery
    2. Sue, We have no Mount Olivet Cemetery in Centre County, and my records do not indicate that we ever had a cemetery by that name. Something tells me there MAY be a cemetery by that name in Philadelphia. It is a longshot, but perhaps you could try it if it "fits" your data. There are probably others about, also. 2. In a message dated 01/01/2002 2:21:54 PM Central Standard Time, msee.sanders@home.com writes: << I am looking for any information on the family of one David WISE who lived in Walker Township at least in 1895. He was married to a daughter of Elizabeth and Henry Gephart Centre County. >> ==================== Sara, I'm sorry that I am unable to help on this matter, but I too am looking for WISE family records. Trying to locate parentage for one Ellen C. Wise (1841-1919) who m/1 29 Jan 1861 (presumably in Centre Co.) to John C. Shuey (1838-1873). After his 1873 death, she m/2 20 May 1880 to his cousin, John W. Shuey (1826-1900). Ellen's dates, as given here, are from a tombstone in the Boalsburg Cemetery, Harris Twp., Centre Co. This stone doesn't appear to match up with any other Ellen Shuey, so we assume it to be hers even though both husbands appear to be buried in the Shiloh Lutheran Cem. of College Township, Centre Co. Using the 1919 year of death, I have TWICE applied for a copy of her death certificate and been told TWICE that there is none -- from the PA Dept of Health. I would love to learn her parents' names and SPECIFIC information regarding her birthdate, birthplace, date and place of death. Don't know what more to ck. (She is NOT a blood-line ancestor of mine) Fred Houts, Brooklyn Center MN

    1. [PACENTRE] These e-mails re: virus alert
    2. Maybe I take the wrong attitude on these messages, but whenever I see an e-mail arriving in my "e-mail mailbox" containing the word virus, I delete it immediately without opening it. The word "virus" itself scares me away. I won't open an e-mail with the word "virus" in the subject line. Consequently, I have no idea what all these recent ones were about. But then . . . you'll also note that I put the word "virus" in the subject line of my own e-mail, didn't I? Well, if some of you don't look at it either, I'll understand. P.S. I've never yet had a problem with viruses, but try to be very careful about use of the "net" and who I accept mail from. I also back up my PAF files frequently. Fred Houts, Brooklyn Center MN

    2. Sara, There are numerous references to Gephart/Gephert in the book. Here they are: Page 440: Taylor Township -- "George Gepheart, of Taylor township, this county, died on the 3d of August, 1879, in the ninety-eighth year of his age. The old gentleman had lived about 50 years in Taylor township, but during all that time never ventured upon a railroad train. He lived by himself, and was eccentric in his habits." 1. [PACENTRE] David and Elizabeth PYLE
    2. You may already have this, but just in case.... In the Tadpole Cemetery in Ferguson Twp., on what was the Frederick Gates farm but is now the Wheeland farm, are these graves: Mother, Elizabeth Pyle, died Aug. 4, 1865, aged 75 years, 8 months, and 26 days. David Pyle died March 30, 1854, aged 72 years, 2 months, and 4 days. These markers are laying flat and under a tree. Most of the stones in this tiny graveyard were laid down flat in one row by a Mr. Mayes so he could mow it easier. He also buried many of the footstones in a corner of the cemetery. He is now dead. The cemetery is now in a good state of upkeep and cared for by people who appreciate its history and importance.
