Hi Carol, I do not have the SHANK's you mention, however I have a contact that you might want to write. His name is Willard Shank, 742 Siglerville Pike Road, Milroy, PA 17063. He lives in Mifflin County and my cousin and I met him last summer at the Mifflin County Historical Library in Lewistown. Willard does not have email so you would have to reach him via snail mail. He has compiled at least one book entitled Ancestors and Descendants of William Landis Shank and Mary Catherine Fultz which we looked at in the Mifflin Co. Hist.Lib. Willard has done quite a bit of research on the SHANK line. Hope this will be of some help. Sara, I know approx. where Henry Fiedler lived. I can tell you this. On his farm was a small graveyard which had belonged to Abraham and Eva Reber, early settlers. It was supposed to be in a small enclosure a few rods west of his house (in 1882). I've not yet located it. Oddly enough -- Eva Reber's headstone is now standing in the Mackeyville Cemetery in Clinton County. I ran across it while doing a reading of that cemetery. The dates match up. Does this mean she was never buried on the farm, or that the graves (or at least one stone) was removed from the farm and set up elsewhere?? Judy, Old Fort, in Potter Township, Centre County, is the name of a little hamlet just south of the Borough of Centre Hall. It is located at the intersection of PA Routes 144 and 45. It was the sight of what was called "Potter's Fort," a fort built for protection from the Indians in the 1770s for the early settlers, before the great runaway. When the attacks began in earnest in 1778, settlers took refuge in Potter's Fort, named for Gen. James Potter, until they left the valley in 1779-1780. Two soldiers were killed in 1778 when they left the security of the fort to harvest grain and encountered five Indians in the field. Their graves can be seen today. The "Old Fort" stood for many years in that vicinity, but has been gone many years. A historic plaque marks the sight. There is a gas station on one corner, a District Justice and movie rental (I think) in an old stone building across the street, and a house and floral shop in the immediate vicinity. The term "Old Fort" can extend down both highways a little distance also, taking in the nearby houses to form this little community. I hope this helps you place it more clearly in Centre County's geography. Every day I try to read the online Centre Daily Times and today saw a reference made of someone who was from Old Fort, Centre Hall. Can someone tell me what and where "Old Fort" is? Thanks! Judy

Hi list, I had a ton of messages in my mailbox this morning, and deleted as I went through them. Someone mentioned the name RUDISILL, but I can't find the message. Sue and Cambria Listers; Here's another chance I have to bring up one of my favorite web sites. To find little-known or now-nonexistent places this web site is GREAT! As for Mt Olivet - I did a quick search and came up with 15 results: 6 cemeteries 8 churches and 1 school scattered among Allegheny, Beaver, Blair, Butler, Chester, Perry, Somerset, and York counties. Bookmark this very useful site! you can even link to an aerial view (20,000 ft up) of the area! http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form J Russell White Goldsboro, North Carolina
I just checked the 1874 Atlas of Centre County. It does not show the Reichard Cemetery but where the cemetery is it is listed as J. Gephart's Farm, 145 Acres. Apparently in 1874 the graveyard was considered a part of that farm. In 1874, the United Brethren Church stood on the main street of town, at the very west end, on the left hand side as you come into town.
