    3. To all who helped with information for me on Franklin Bechdel m/ Nancy A Boozer. Franklin L Bechdel was the son of David and Christina "Workinger" Bechdel, proof; 1860 Census Liberty Twp, Centre County, PA David Bechdel,50 Christina,41 FRANKLIN,20 (bn ca 1840) Mary E,19 Rebecca,17 Sarah,15 James,13{1847} David,11 Joseph,10(1850} Lydia,7 William,4(1854} Lingles Cemetery records(Harry and Vera Lingle, Beech Creek) James Bechdel 1847-1907 wofie Catherine Deihl, son of David and Christina Schenk Cemetery. David Bechdel 1849-1878, son of David and Christina, Baptist Cemetery, Blanchard. Franklin's obit Centre Democrat, 12/8/1904, lists a sister Mrs Levi Rupert, I cannot find a burial for them.(Levi & wife). I really feel the census and the burial information with the matching dates of Franklins brothers, confirms that Franklin Bechdel was the son of David and Christina nee Workinger Bechdel. ANY input welcome. Thanks everyone for your help. Dave

    3. Item # 1065731075 Auction closes 1-26 at 12:34 PST Here are four items from Centre County PA. The only identified one is a small photograph (5.5" by 3.5") captioned on reverse, "Original Ore Washer Building as it looked about 1924". I presume it to be from the Ore Works at Scotia, Pa. Has tape repairs on reverse, small thimbtack holes. Image quite clear. Second is an old B&W photo (1930's-1940's ??) showing a tower in the woods. No ID. Items 3 and 4 are two real-photo div-back postcards, circa 1910's, one showing five young men in wintertime, and the other showing an older couple (seated) and a younger man and woman. No ID on these. Poor/fair condition. All of these were purchased under the idea of them being Scotia items.

    3. Fellow listers, This Martin Batdorf appears to be my 7th great grandfather, as such, I have significant interest in the deed. However, with $150.00 as a minimum reserve, it sounds like this item should be in a museum. If anyone on the list happens to purchase it, I would greatly enjoy obtaining a photocopy. Thanks to the folks who occasionally alert us to these EBAY auction items that relate to Centre County history. - Doug Bierly Here's the link again if anyone wants to watch the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1066227499

Does the English word "wander" derive from this word?- as in "to wander" to America? :)" Short answer: yes. Long answer: The German verb "wander" is translatable into English as wander travel ramble rove walk (on foot) hike (e.g. as a sport) migrate (as in birds, or peoples) shift (as in dune) diffuse The English word is recorded in my NOD as of West Germanic origin. Certainly, both the English and the German words have the same root. Donna's husband's ancestors migrated, they were migrants. From the point of view of their country of birth, they were "Auswanderer" = "out-migrants" = "emigrants". From the point of view of their new chosen country, they were "Einwanderer" = "in-migrants" = "immigrants". English useage of the German is amongst others "wanderlust" (a strong desire to travel), also Wanderjahr and Wandervogel. Over to the linguist(s). Very interesting.... I knew some of the BATDORF Line (I've also seen it spelled BOTTORFF/BUDTORFF) had moved to Centre Co. because in the 1885 Obit of my ancestor, John Davis HUGHS/HUGHES ( b. 1824 at Buffalo Run), it states that he learned the blacksmith trade with his brother in law Jacob BATDORF/BOTTORF in Bellefonte, at the age of 15 after completing schooling at Bellefonte. He then started in business for himself at Buffalo Run, and in 1846 married Hannah HICKS and in 1865 moved the family to Altoona, Pa where he operated a successful Coal Business. I'm still searching for this Jacob BATDORF to see which HUGHES sister he married or where he relocated. Jean

    2. Jean, What a wonderful item! Martin Batdorff Sr's wife, Maria Elisabeth (Walborn) Batdorff (1696-?), was the sister of my 7th great grandmother, Anna Christina (Walborn) Loesch (1700-1782). Obviously, numerous descendants of these families came to populate Centre County. The Batdorffs were among those who were founding members of Christ Lutheran Church at Stouchsburg in Berks County, PA in 1743. I wish I could afford it! I'll bookmark it, just in case. :-) Justin Justin Kirk Houser Genealogist/Researcher of Central PA and Beyond Main Lines: Houser, Breon, Shawley, Ranio/Hrynio (and others) President, BAHS Class of 2003 Student Representative, BASD Board of Education Listowner, PACENTRE-L@Rootsweb.com Historian, Schürch Association of North America (specialty Central PA lines) Member, Valley View United Methodist Church "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature"

I am not selling it, I wish I could afford it.Thought someone might be interested in this item. 1763 Indenture/Deed, HEIDELBERG Township, LANCASTER [now LEBANON] County, PENNSYLVANIA. Heidelberg Twp. is adjacent to present-day Lancaster County along Lebanon's southeast border, containing Schaefferstown, Reistville, near Millbach & Richland, in adjacent Millcreek Twp. Also quite proximate to BERKS Co. border. Made part of Lebanon Co. with the county's formation in 1813. Unfolded document measures approx. 28 x 10 3/4", written entirely by hand, on sheepskin w/ scalloped edges. Obvious fold lines w/ miniscule hole at left fold juncture, approx. 1" along seam at center fold juncture, intact right fold juncture. Lower left lateral fold shows minor deterioration, with a few pinholes within the seam. The vellum itself is a bit unevenly toned, typically. All writing is clear & legible, with the title on verso faded somewhat. Several of the scans have been deliberately darkened to emphasize the penmanship on this document; they are not soiled or blackened, as perhaps they appear, only a bit toned in spots, resembling light foxing on paper media. Indenture, dated 14 July 1763, between Martin BATTORFF [aka BATDORFF, BATDORF], and Maria Elizabeth, his wife, of the "Township of HYDELBERG" [HEIDELBERG], Lancaster County, and Martin BATTORFF Junior, eldest son of Martin Sr., conveying land from father to son. The parcel is described as having been granted "by Indenture of Release" by "The Honorable THOMAS PENN, Esq." on 10 Nov. 1738 unto CASPER WISTER [aka WISTAR] and Catherina, his wife, as a parcel of 1,724 acres, who in turn released on 1-2 Nov. 1739 the land to Martin BATTDORFF Senior. The present parcel is 129 acres from this large tract is described primarily in terms of marks such as a black oak &c; names mentioned as owning bordering lands are Christian WALBORN, George SAY, & Peter SHELL. Contains signatures of Martin & Maria Elisabeth BATTORF (both their marks, each with a red wax seal affixed onto blue silk ribbon, stitched through the vellum and visible on verso), Adam REED (Lancaster Co. Justice of the Peace, also w/ adjacent wax seal on ribbon), two witness signatures, one undecipherable, the other appearing to be Jn. WEISER. Significant pre-Revolutionary War document tracing back to the Proprietary government of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, PA founder. This indenture records only the 2nd transfer of this land in the vicinity of Schaefferstown, which, if memory serves, was established during the very same period (1750s-1760s). Detail scan shows mention of Thomas Penn beneath the word "Indenture," but it may not appear too clearly. Reserve: $150.00. Please see my current auctions for a small but excellent selection of original 18th- and 19th-century Pennsylvania deeds and indentures from Berks, Lebanon, and Lancaster Counties. These documents emerged in an estate auction in Bethel Township, Berks County, in about 1967, have been retained by the same owner since then, and thus have not been publicly offered in 35 years. Prior to that, they were evidently assembled by a private collector and inherited from family archives; presumedly, some of them have never been publicly offered previous to these eBay postings. Needless to say, their authenticity is fully guaranteed into perpetuity, as there are no doubts as to their origins or recent provenance, and all are clearly done on period paper, parchment, or vellum in period ink. TERMS: Postage/Handling $2.50 per document, 50 cents each additional, to US addresses. International shipping generally available at cost plus nominal handling fee. Pennsylvania residents add 6% sales tax or provide valid PA resale number. Combined postage always applied to multiple purchases. Optional insurance extra at buyer's expense. Payment by personal or cashier's check, money order, or on-line via PayPal, Billpoint, or BidPay is expected within 10 days of auction's end.
