    3. I agree. I've asked questions on other county sites with no response from the list manager. Even the answer "I don't know" would be courteous and also satisfy me. Thank you again Justin! 3. Thank you, Justin. Death Certificate of Sudie (Bartley) PEESE indicates her burial at Meyer Cemetery. It was signed 15 Dec 1951, the day before the burial. Obituary appearing in the Centre Democrat indicates Trcziyulny Cemetery. I'm guessing that she is actually at Trcziyulny Cemetery since the obit appeared after the burial. Also, her husband, Joseph V. Peese, was buried at Trcziyulny in 1962. Thanks so much for your help - and all you give to the list. Colette

    2. Colette, Meyer Cemetery is in Benner Township. Trcziyulny Cemetery is in Boggs Township. There is no relationship between the two. I have gravestone listings, though, for both, so if you send me the name and dates I will try and see which is correct. 3. I have a death certificate that states a relative was buried at Meyer Cemetery. The obituary of this same person states burial was made at Trcziyulny Cemetery. Can someone tell me if there is a relationship between the two cemeteries? Or are they alternate names for the same place? Thanks for any help, Colette

    2. Justin - Thanks for responding to my post so quickly. I knew it was just a matter of time that there would be some connection with you, no matter how loose. The OSWALTs were in that area for many years, and quite a few generations. Of the suppositions you make about Maude FETZER, either scenario could be valid. The OSWALTs I listed were all born in Clarence, and James and Mary OSWALT lived there until their deaths. The females in this line mature very early and never lack for suitors. Although I have never heard of a child out of wedlock, there are a lot of seven-month first children. This, in spite of the fact that morality and spiritual values are emphasized among all that I have known or met. I guess the next thing is to look for a 1st marriage between Ellen and a Fetzer. Thanks for correcting the name, it was hard to read on the census. 3. Hello Sue Renkert, I visited the TRCZIYULNY (Milesburg), OLD METHODIST/LUTHERAN (Pleasant Gap) and CENTRE HALL cemeteries in '99 and I know I saw some BRILLHART grave stones. Since it was my first cemetery hopping trip and I wasn't looking for them, I didn't record which cemetery they were in...(newbie mistake). Of the three I visited, I tend to think it was the Old Methodist/Lutheran cemetery...? Possibly someone on the list can clear that up for us...? Regards, Paul

    2. Pat, Here is the obit of Rachel: Her obituary in the DEMOCRATIC WATCHMAN of 19 June 1925 reads: "Mrs. Rachel K. Stover, widow of the late Noah Stover of Haines township, Centre county, died at the home of her son, Charles, in Altoona, on Sunday morning, aged 85 years. Her husband has been dead for some years but surviving her are two sons and one daughter: Charles H. Stover, of Altoona; Harold C., of Millheim; and Mrs. Harry Rohm, of Lancaster County. Mrs. Stover was a member of the Lutheran church all her life. The remains were taken to Wolf's Store where funeral services were held in Wolf's Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, burial being made in the cemetery adjoining the chapel." NOTE: Wolf's Chapel is in a different valley than Wolf's Store. Apparently the writer of the obituary was confused. Wolf's Chapel was located near Aaronsburg, Haines Twp., Centre Co., PA. Wolf's Store is a village in Miles Twp., Centre Co., PA. She was Rachael SHIRK, b abt 1839 in Union Co, PA, d 14 Jun 1925 in Altoona, Blair Co, PA; bur 17 Jun 1925 in Stover (Wolfs Chapel) Cem, Haines Twp, Centre Co, PA. Her parents were Jacob SHIRK (b 8 Aug 1804 in PA; d 8 Sep 1872 in Hartley Twp, Union Co, PA; bur in Keister Cem, Hartley Twp) and his wife, Elizabeth --- (b 18 May 1813 in PA; d 4 Dec 1886, bur with husband). His parents were Abraham SHIRK (b c1760-70 in Lebanon Co, PA; d abt Jun 1848 in Hartley Twp, Union Co, PA; likely bur Keister Cem, no gravestone), and his wife Magdalena GINGRICH, who d pre-1840. She was a d/o Michael GINGRICH Jr. (1753-1838) and Catharine KAUFFMAN (1763-1839). Michael's father was Michael GINGRICH Sr. (d 1785), and his stepmother was Magdalena FOULKE (see below). His parents were Abraham SCHERCK (b abt 1746 in Bethel Twp, Lebanon Co, PA; d 1829 in East Hanover Twp, Lebanon Co, PA) and his wife, Margaret LENTZ. His parents were Casper SCHÜRCH (b c1700-10, prob in Germany of Swiss parentage; d 1770 in Bethel Twp, Lebanon Co, PA; bur Wolfs Union Cem, Lebanon Co); and his wife, Magdalena FOULKE, who d 1796 in Bethel Twp. Casper was the immigrant of 1732 on the ill-fated voyage "Love and Unity," and arrived in Philadelphia on the "Norris." His first wife and child died at sea. He is listed as "Code H" in the records of the Schürch Family Association of North America. Magdalena FOULKE remarried to Michael GINGRICH Sr. (d 1785) after the death of her husband. You'll note that he was the grandfather of Abraham SHIRK's wife! 1. Re: [PACENTRE] McLAUGHLIN - HAYES - FITZER
    2. Jan, I suspect that Maude FITZER age 16 is really Maude FETZER. I believe that she is the same woman who married Omar ETTERS, my relative, as Maude was from Clarence, which is in Snow Shoe Township. Here is Omar's obituary: His obituary in the CENTRE DEMOCRAT of 20 Sep 1956 reads: "Omar F. Etter, retired, who resided in Pitcairn, Pa., died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 19, 1956. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Etter, born in Pine Hall, Centre County, was the son of Reuben and Salena Carson. He was married to the former Maude Fetzer of Clarence who preceded him in death. Two brothers and one sister survive. They are Ralph of Williamsport, Harry of Snow Shoe and Mrs. Velda Gillen of Bellefonte and Largo, Fla. Funeral services will be held on Saturday with interment in Pitcairn." Pitcairn is in Allegheny County, near Pittsburgh. Omar's parents were really Reuben and Salena (Carson) Etters (with an "s.") Whether he dropped the "s" or the obit just misprinted I can't say. I am also a direct descendant of the FETZERs in Centre Co. (earliest one in line was Andrew FETZER, c1750-1804.) I don't know how Maude fits in, though. Whether she was Ellen's daughter to a prior husband OR whether Ellen had her out of wedlock with a Mr. _______ Fetzer I can't say. Hopefully this gives you some clues and if you learn any more about Maude or this elusive Mr. Fetzer, I would be most interested in knowing about it! 3. I am trying to sort out the family of my ggg grandparents, Samuel & Elizabeth BRILLHART, and I wonder if anyone has any information that may help, or if anyone can give me some new perspective on something I may not be seeing here. I have baptismal records (Salem Lutheran) for three of their children, born in Aaronsburg in 1815 (Jacob), 1817 (Margaret) and 1823 (Peter). 1820 Census - Haines Township, Centre County, PA Samuel & Elizabeth BRILLHART, both in the 26-44 age group 2 males under 10 (Jacob, 4 & ??), 1 male 16-25 (unknown) 1 female under 10 (Margaret, 3), & 1 female 10-15 (??) (Peter was not born yet) Either there were two older children for which I have found no other record, or perhaps either Samuel or Elizabeth had a brother with a young child staying with them. xxxxxxxxxxxxx 1830 Census - Haines Township, Centre County, PA - Samuel BRILLHART, age 40-50, 1 male 5-10 (Peter, 6), 1 male 10-15 (Jacob, 14) and 1 female 10-15 (Margaret, 13). Just the three children I have baptismal records for in this census. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Samuel is listed in the 1840 census, his age is 50-60, apparently a widow, with 1 female under 5, 1 20-30 and 1 (40-50). Margaret was married by 1832. Peter living in Aaronsburg in 1845, so I have no idea why he is not listed in the 1840 census. I have no idea what happened to Jacob. There is no record of him after the 1830 census. The logical explanation is that Samuel had remarried to a woman with a daughter and possibly a granddaughter. Agnes is married by1840 to John Ross BELL, and there is a woman 50-60 listed with them who could be Margaret's mother or Ross's mother. Ross' father is not found in the census. And Margaret's mother was not listed back in 1830, so it seems likely she had died. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1850 Census - Haines & Penn Township, Centre County, no record of Samuel BRILLHART in the 1850 census. Abigail BRILHART 50 F is living with: Jacob FREDERICK 25 M Carpenter, Real Estate Value $800 Rachael FREDERICK 21 F Thomas FREDERICK 2 M Mary FREDERICK 1 F Abigail - possible second wife of Samuel???????? Is anyone familiar with the FREDERICK families of Centre County? Does anyone have a record of the marriage of this Jacob and Rachel that would give Rachel's maiden name? Does anyone know who Abigail BRILHART might be????? I sure would appreciate any help or insight anyone might be able to give me! Thanks much! Sue

    1. [PACENTRE] Suggestions on census records
    2. jwatson
    3. Does anyone have any suggestions about the following: I am looking for Robert Watson and his son James Watson in the 1860 and 1870 census records, but can't find them. Robert is in the 1850 census in Potter Township with wife Matilda and children. He disappears from the Potter census in 1860 even though he died in 1863. I cannot find James in the Potter census either, even though my family history describes him as a "prominent farmer in Centre County." I have also looked through about half of the other townships with no luck yet. My questions: Are there any indexes for these years? Did a township possibly break off from Potter in the 1850's and form a new township? James was later buried in Bellefonte. What townships are close to Bellefonte that would be farming areas in that era? Any help would be appreciated.
