    1. Re: [PACENTRE] Craigs in Centre County.
    2. Upon further research, have learned that James Brown Craig was twice married -- both marriages apparently occurring in Centre Co, PA. First, 24 Dec 1906 to Myrtle G. Metzler, and second, Mary H. Warfield, 6 Jul 1918. The first marriage is recorded in Centre Co, PA, marriage records, Bk 14, p 421, applic # 7221. The second one is in Bk 21, p 268, applic # 10770. I have no idea at this time if the first marriage ended in divorce or if Myrtle died prior to his 2nd marriage. I may also have to "take back" the middle name of the Fillmore Craig who m. Dorothy Garbrick (as mentioned in previous e-mail). I reported his full name to you as Fillmore Thomas Craig, but his obit follows, and it gives his name as Fillmore P. Craig -- "Fillmore P. Craig, of Shingletown, died in the Geisinger Hospital, Danville, at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Born Oct. 12, 1911 in Julian, he was the son of James B. and Myrtle Metzler Craig. He was married to Dorothy Garbrick who died Sept. 5, 1949. He is survived by one son, James, at home. He was a member of the Boalsburg Fire Company and of the Centre County Volunteer Firemen's Ass'n. Funeral services were held from the Koch Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Donald G. Raup officiating. Interment was made in the Boalsburg cemetery." Fred Houts, Brooklyn Center MN

    2. Six months later, on June 3, 1997, the following brief obituary appeared in the CENTRE DAILY TIMES newspaper of State College, PA -- "A graveside memorial will be held for James Brown Craig Jr., who died in Dec. 1996, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Centre County Memorial Park, with the Rev. Emily W. Craig of Coronado Shores, Ore., sister of the deceased officiating. A 1939 graduate of Bellefonte High School, he was president of the class and editor of the school newspaper. Memorial contributions may be made to the J. B. Craig Jr. Fund, which will be used to buy large-print books and book tapes, in care of the Centre County Library, 203 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte PA 16823."

    2. The following is from the CENTRE DAILY TIMES of 31 Dec 1996, by Hugh McAlester -- "This conversation took place recently between two members of the Bellefonte High School Class of 1939. 'Our president is dead!' 'Clinton?' 'No, Jim Craig.' "Jim was president of the Bellefonte High School class of 1939. "Word was received in Bellefonte on Dec. 18 that James B. Craig Jr., 76, died of pneumonia in Sharon, Conn., Dec. 17, 1996. He formerly lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., where he practiced law. "He was born Nov. 28, 1920 in Bellefonte, a son of the late James B. and Mary Warfield Craig. "He graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University, received a master of arts degree from Penn State in 1964, and later a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In the mid-1940s he was first vice consul at the American Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. "During summer school at Penn State in 1948 he taught a political science class in inter-American relations, in which I was a student. "Craig's great-grandfather was John P. Harris, a Bellefonte banker, who as an employee of the Bellefonte banking firm of Humes, McAllister, Hale and Co., worked on the financing of Penn State's original Old Main. "Craig's grandfather, J. Frank Warfield of Bellefonte, was the general passenger freight agent of the Central Railroad of Pennsylvania. It operated between Bellefonte and Mill Hall from 1893 to 1918. As such, he was instrumental in the founding of Hecla Park by the railroad. "Craig is survived by one daughter, Claudia, and one sister, the Rev. Emily Craig, a resident of the state of Oregon. One son, James B. Craig III, preceded him in death in 1951. Funeral services for Craig were held Dec. 21 at an Episcopal church in Milford, Conn."

    1. Re: [PACENTRE] Craigs in Centre County.
    2. Hi, In my database I have a Fillmore Thomas Craig, born about 12 Oct 1911 at Julian, Huston Twp, Centre Co, PA, as a son of James Brown Craig and his wife and Myrtle G. (Metzler) Craig. He married my father's first cousin, Dorothy Geraldine Garbrick, born 19 Jul 1919, died 5 Sep 1949 (both b & d at Shingletown, Harris Twp, Centre Co, PA), she was a d/o Albert and Matilda (Jordan) Garbrick -- Albert Garbrick being a brother of my paternal grandmother. I show the aforementioned Fillmore Thomas Craig as dying 22 Mar 1952 at Danville, Montour Co, PA. Fillmore and Dorothy are buried at Boalsburg, Harris Twp, Centre Co, PA. I show only one child born to this couple, he being: James Albert Craig, born 15 Jan 1947 at Bellefonte, died 15 Jul 1968 at Bellefonte, buried 18 Jul 1968 at Boalsburg. Never married. My database also showed your Fillmore Craig married to Mary Yothers, but I had no detail on them until seeing your e-mail. They were "connected" to a son, Daniel Craig (1883-1945) whose obit follows -- "Daniel Craig of Julian RD died at 9:27 a.m. yesterday in the Lewistown Hospital where he was a patient 4 days. Mr. Craig who became ill the day he entered the hospital, was 61. Born at Julian, June 2, 1883, he was the son of Fillmore and Mary Yothers Craig. Three brothers, James, Irvin and Robert, all of near Julian survive. The deceased was employed by the P.R.R. at Lewistown. He was a member of the Julian United Brethren Church. Funeral services will be held at the Irvin Craig home at 4 p.m. Wed., with Rev. Harry J. Daniels of Port Matilda officiating. Interment will take place in Julian cemetery. Friends may call at the Irvin Craig home Tuesday evening." I also have an Irvin T. Craig, born 16 Oct 1886 at Julian, Huston Twp, Centre Co, PA, died Aug 1970; m. Mabel A. Morrisey (1902-1983), whose obit follows -- Her obituary from the CENTRE DEMOCRAT of 6 Jul 1983 reads: "Funeral services for Mabel A. Craig, 81, of Julian R.D. 1, were held Sun. at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg, with the Rev. Dr. Edward E. Lindsey of Julian R.D. officiating. Burial was in Julian Cemetery, Huston Township. She died Thurs., June 30, 1983 at Centre Community Hospital. Mrs. Craig was born in Tyrone, Nov. 25, 1902, a daughter of John C. and Mabel M. Dixon Morrissey. Her husband, Irvin Craig, died in 1970. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret M. Walk of Bellefonte and Violet O. Craig of Julian R.D.; two sons, John S. of Julian R.D. and Walter A. of Julian; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Craig was a member of Brookside Wesleyan Church, Julian." In addition to the children named in her obit, they also had a son, Clarence Earl Craig, born 26 Apr 1921 at Tyrone, Blair Co, PA, died March 1966, who m. 17 Nov 1945 at Bellefonte, to my 4th cousin, Betty Jane Shuey, d/o James I. and Ethel L. (Fye) Shuey. I show that Betty was b abt 1926 in Centre Co, but have no other details on her, nor on any family they might have had (or have). There are other Craigs in my database as well. 2. Sara and Eric Sanders-Buell
    3. I was searching through the Hetrina book (Hessian soldiers who fought during the American Revolution, marburg Archives) at the National Archives for information on John Christian Reese. To make a long amusing story short, I was not able to copy the pages from the book because I had locked by purse in a locker and did not have the additional quarter necessary to open the locker, extract my money and lock it up again! I therefore copied down the following information on what I think might be information on John Christian Reese's brother Johannes Conrad Ries. 1. 6049 2. Riess 3. Konrad 4. 1760/61 5. Schrecksbach 6. I must say, I did not see any other Riess, Ries, etc..from Schrecksbach though....but I have heard that John Christian Reese is listed in the Hetrina. Is anyone on the list familiar with both John Christian Reese and the Hetrina books. I think he fought under Kynphausen or Von Donop (sp) at the Battle of Trenton. Any additional clues on how to find him would be helpful...I am happy to send copies of the pages I xerox as well. Sara

    1. [PACENTRE] Craigs in Centre County.
    2. Hello All, I am very new to this list, and it seems like a great place. I am searching for info on the Craig and especially the Duke family. Irvin John Craig and Georgianna Duke are my great grandparents. I believe Georgianna's parents were John Duke and Lydia Shaw b.1830. According to the 1870 Census she was living with Thomas and Lydia Parson. This seems like an incredibly knowledgeable group. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed because I haven't had much luck so far with the info online about the Dukes, especially. I've been searching online for 10 years. I live in Indianapolis and havn't had the opportunity to dig through the library. "Democratic Watchman" CRAIG- Rev. John Craig, a retired United Bretheren minister, died at his home at Julian, on Wednesday morning, of a complication of diseases. He was about seventy-one years of age and has lived in Julian for almost a quarter of a century. He was a quiet, unostentatious man and one much loved and honored in the church of his choice. He is survived by a family of children, all grown to manhood and womanhood. The funeral will be held tomarrow afternoon. Rev. Craig, previous to the Civil War was a blacksmith at Julian. When the call for volunteers came he enlisted as a member of Company C, 148th regiment, and went to the front. He was a brave and gallant soldier and was wounded three times, carrying one of the bullets in his body until his death. On account of one of his injuries he had his right leg amputated in 1896. For the past four years he has been practically helpless but he bore the affliction with the utmost christian fortitude. It was after the war that he entered the ministry and for years preached the gospel to his fellow-men. _______________________________________ Georgiann's obit; Mrs. Georgianna Duke Craig, wife of Irvin John Craig died at her home at Johnstown on January 26. She was born at Milesburg, a daughter of John and Lydia Brook Duke, both deceased. These step-brothers and sisters also survive; Curtis, Sherman, and Leona Parsons, Mrs. Mary Woods, and W.P. Parsons. Services were performed by Rev. Dr. W.K. Anderson. Interrment was made in the family plot in Grand View cemetery, Johnstown.

It also works well for genealogical researchers and has suggestions and techniques for interviewing, tools to use, and even has an outline of questions to ask. http://lcweb.loc.gov/folklife/fieldwk.html I interviewed family members both before and after I studied anthro. All of the generation before me are dead now, and the one thing I regret not asking each of them is for a description of the home they lived in as a child, and memories associated with it. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] thanks
    2. Hello everybody, I would like to thank you all for your kind notes of appreciation for the list and my involvement with it. Perhaps it is appropriate here for me to say a few words concerning how this list began, as I haven't delved into that topic for quite some time now. It was in the Spring of 1999 when I signed up for a number of Rootsweb.com lists. Some of these were the lists for Lancaster County, Berks County, etc. After following the interesting exchanges on those lists, I thought to myself: "Why don't we have such a list for Centre County? I wonder how much work it would take to run it?" Not long after that I was home sick from school and I figured that it was time to pursue this. So I read the Rootsweb.com guide for mailing lists, and thought it would be an easy enough task. At that time Rootsweb was still struggling to operate on its own, free, and depended on donations from benefactors. It had not yet created those suites of mail lists and message boards. They came later in '99 or perhaps sometime in 2000; I can't now recall. I told my mother about my plan, borrowed her credit card and charged the $12 or whatever it was, and my list was activated: PACENTRE was born. It wasn't long before we had some subscribers; this has grown steadily ever since. And I must say I have enjoyed nearly every minute of it. Having been born and raised in Centre County, I've lived here all of my life (albeit a short one of only 17 years thus far). My family, on all sides, has lived in this county for countless eons. My relatives are buried in nearly every cemetery you can name, and many of them live around here. I can still boast having both parents, all four grandparents, 2 aunts, an uncle, 40 great-aunts and great-uncles, and 2 great-great-aunts (aged 95 and 89), along with a host of cousins. Having been educated in our local schools and having followed our county's government and goings-on for many years, I have a deeply vested interest in this county, its past, its present, and its future. I hope to spend the rest of my life here, as countless generations have before me, and do my part to keep this beautiful county that way, while enabling progress to lead us into the 21st century. This list is a love of mine, as I can talk with all of you about this glorious area that I call home, and the various families from all parts that have also called it "home" over the centuries. When I talk about most of these places, or these families, I usually have seen their gravesite, or the family farm, or at least the particular region of the township they lived in during my research and travels. It is always exciting to learn more about anyone who called Centre County home at one point or another. And that is just the point of all of this. Without the discussion, the series of queries you all provide, the helpful answers provided by those of you who so generously offer your time to do the look-ups, this list would be nowhere near what it is. It takes all of us working together to make this, as some put it, the "best list out there." I think it is worth it -- very much so. It is an honor to our county and our ancestors who lived here to maintain such an active and interesting discussion forum. I learn daily from all of you out there who post, and relish every minute. I therefore wish to extend a hearty Thank YOU to all of those out there who make this list work via their involvement and concern. You've helped fulfill a dream of mine in carrying on this discussion list about Centre County. I look forward to many more years of such interesting conversations. 3. Folks: I've been a member of this list for quite a while now, and have been successful in making contact with other researchers, and finding a vast amount of informaiton on the Smeal family of Clearfield Co., PA and the familys that married into that line. I have recorded many many members of this family, have been lucky enough to track down photo's of some, old letters from others, but most folks are a name, a place and a date. But... what were there thoughts?, their hopes? their dreams? their advise?, Not all of us are lucky to have an ancestor like Renee does who was an avid journaler. As I am preparing to send the letters for our August 2002 reunion, I want to compile a booklet of the thoughts, dreams, memories and advise of the older members of the family, as well as the dreams of the youngsters. I guess what I am looking for from the list is suggestions of questions to include in a questionaire to be sent to all my aunts, uncles, cousins etc. Thanx Brenda Smeal Gibson http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~smealkin
