    1. [PACENTRE] Re: Wolf's Den?
    2. Paul Roth
    3. Hello Pat McBride, Couldn't find "Wolf's Den" or "McBride's Gap", but according to "Where To Go & Place Names of Centre Co." by Paul M. DUBBS Pub. 1959-60: there was a Wolf's Chapel in Haines Twp. "The site is along Rt. 45 (formerly called the turnpike) about two miles east of Aaronsburg. There, on Dec. 15, 1789, Jacob STOVER "for and in consideration of promoting literature and learning" donated a seven-acre tract "for the use of a school and a master thereof." "Shortly afterwards a double log house was built, with one room reserved for the master and his family. Later that building was replaced by a larger one erected by the Haines Twp. School District. For many years the school was the only one in the Eastern part of Penns Valley." "Similarly, the oldest cemetery in the twp. was the one adjoining the school and was part of the land donated by Jacob STOVER for school purposes. A small church there was called "WOLF"S CHAPEL" - a name which has persisted today even though nothing remains of the church or school." ******************* Also there was a Wolf's Store in Miles Twp.: "There is no store at Wolf's Store any more. The oddly-named litle Miles Twp. community consists of 8 homes, if you include the one down the lane to the south of town on the GRAMLEY farm. the other homes line highway Rt. 95 abt. 4 miles east of Rebersburg." "The town received it's name from a store established there in 1844 by Thomas WOLF, in the home now occupied by Mr & Mrs. John HANSELMAN, Sr. The store's activities dwindled until abt. 10 years ago (1949-50) when it was closed." Regards, Paul

    1. Re: [PACENTRE] WOLF'S DEN, MCBRIDE'S GAP
    2. Pat, I must confess I do not know of a Wolf's Den. The area you put it in would put it up in Curtin, Howard, or Liberty Townships. McBride's Gap in College Township was named for John McBride (1797-1864). It is now on the property of the Rockview State Correctional Institution. The former village of Lauvertown was on the site. John's wife, Eva Etters (1806-1888), was a sister of my 3rd great-grandmother. 3. I am searching for information on George Osman, my 3rd great grandfather family. George was married to Leah Straw. He died in 1836 in Penn Township, Centre County. At least 2 of their 4 children were born in Centre County: Emeline: August 7, 1824 and Absolom: October 18, 1832 in Milheim, Penn Township, Centre Co. I have information on this family and would like to share with someone. Thanks in advance! Margaret

    1. [PACENTRE] Susannah WARING - 1860 Census
    2. At long last, I found a Susannah WARING in this area of PA. The census index on Ancestry has Susannah Waring listed in Morris Tshp., Clearfield County. However, according to the records sent me by another researcher, my Susannah Waring was Susannah HERSHEY by 1860 and in Centre County by 1870. I'm hoping sks has earlier information on either Susannah or can access the actual census record for Susannah Waring in the 1860 Clearfield census. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this puzzle. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Cemetery Records, Westward migration of Centre Co. families
    2. je - Your queries about WATSON always catch my eye. That is a name which appears in lineage of a son-in-law from CA. However, his WATSON ancestors were in SC. Several years ago I was doing some cursory searching for grandchildren's' school project. Imagine my surprise when I found their earlier ancestor, David WATSON b. 1770 in Lancaster County, PA near my PA OSWALT ancestors, pointing once again to the 6 degrees of separation theory. As I studied your post, the date of 1860 census entry jumped out. Since the Civil War occurred in time period that and the 1870 census. Have you checked military records? My Centre County ancestor David OSWALT died in battle in VA, 1863 and was buried on the battlefield before being moved to the Fredericksburg Nat'l Cemetery, and not with his wife in Centre County. Since your James WATSON was married, you might also check for a Widow's Pension in those records. 1. [PACENTRE] Cemetery Records, Westward migration of Centre Co. families

    3. Hi all -- I am running into an interesting situation researching my ancestor James Watson, born about 1832 in Potter Twnshp, wife Elizabeth (Hess), and children Andrew J., born about 1835, Anna B, born about 1835., and Robert L., born 1864, allegedly near Bellefonte. According to a family narrative, James was a "prominent farmer" in Centre County and was buried in Bellefonte. I have found him on the 1860 census in Walker Township as a day laborer but he completely disappears from the census in 1870 and 1880, therefore I am questioning the accuracy of the family narrative. I am trying to pursue information about his burial, as the narrative said that he was buried in Bellefonte. I checked the records of the Union cemetery online and do not find a listing for James. My question: Are there other cemeteries in Bellefonte or does James show up in anyone's cemetery records. He must have died sometime after 1864. The Watson family was Presbyterian. I did get a good suggestion to c! ontact the library to look up tax records, which I will do. Also, does anyone have information about westward migration of Centre County families, specifically to Illinois? There may be a connection with this family to Joliet, Ill. I scanned a few pages of the 1880 census from Joliet and found names from Centre County that are familiar to me through poring over the census (specifically, Spanglers who were born in Pa.) so I am wondering if groups of famlies might have moved to this area. It is also interesting to me that after looking at every page of the 1880 Centre County census that so few Watson's remain in the area, since there were at least three very prolific families of Watsons in the late 1700's. That's what makes this all so fascinating -- right? Hope some of you with more experience will have some information. And thank you all for your responses to all my questions.

    1. Re: [PACENTRE] Love & Unity (The Norris)
    2. Lorraine, He left Europe on the Love & Unity; after the survivors took it over they landed it in Boston, where the Norris picked them up and took them to Philadelphia. I don't know whether the list included those previously on the Norris, or just those it picked up from the Love & Unity. And, most of these ships were used over many years; could your ancestor have come on the Norris in a year other than 1732? 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Re: Cemetery Records
    2. Mary, The projected release date is this Spring (March/April). We still have to compare to the cemetery record books -- I'm not sure when we'll get up there to do that. Soon, I hope. It shouldn't be too much longer, if all goes well. It will include all known cemeteries in Philipsburg and Rush Township and be completely indexed for all persons. It will be published by Centre County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1135, State College, PA 16804-1135. I've worked on getting this together and believe it will be useful and accurate. 1. [PACENTRE] Help needed
    2. Ellen
    3. Hi All! I've been lurking for some time, and enjoying all of your comments about the wonderful ancestors you had in Centre County! I especially liked Justin's recent commentary on our beautiful county. I'm not a native of Centre County, but we have lived in Centre County for 29 years. Now I have a son-in-law who is a native, so I finally have an excuse to do Centre County research! Enough of my introduction, I need some help outside of Centre county. Does anyone on this list live in northern NJ? My first cousin died yesterday and I would like to obtain a copy of his obituary, which I assume will be in today's paper. It would probably be in a paper from near Hackensack or Teaneck, NJ. If anyone can help, please email me off list, as this is not really a Centre County issue and I hate to clutter the list with such things. Thanks for all of the wonderful posts in the past, Ellen Copper State College, PA fec3@vicon.net
