They were attended by Miss Magdeline KIPE and mr Austin CLAPPER, both of Williamsburg. The impressive ceremony of the Lutheran church was used. The ceremony was performed in the presence of about twenty-five relatives and invited friends of the couple. Following the ceremony a sumptuous wedding dinner was served at the bride's home, where the wedding took place. Mr. DUBBS stated, in the book, that time & printing space limited what was actually published. Does this mean that there is MORE gen-info in the original articles?...or might there be additional info NOT printed in the original articles? If anyone who has access to the SCHLOW Library (State College, PA.) is interested...and has some time on their hands, they can sift through the CDT original articles to see if there are more names than those, from the book, that I have posted at my site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~paroth/MATERNAL/PlaceNames-Surnames.html As I live 3 & 1/2 hours away, I don't see that I can make the trip and spend the time needed to compile any additional data from the CDT articles any time soon...though I AM interested in doing so. Mary. I was sorry to hear of the death of your husband, Bill. May God bless and be with you in this, your time of greatest need. My husband died a year ago and I know that you will never completely move beyond it. However, as the days pass, you will start to think of the happy times you had together and the sad times will be less imposing. It will ease you to surround yourself with loving and compassionate family members and friends and to try to busy yourself with things you used to love to do. Eventually, you will begin to enjoy life again. And, above all, prayer is very healing. Don't let anyone tell you that you will get over it, because you won't. You can and will eventually go on with your life and maybe even marry again, but you will never get over it. May God bless you. Linda
Listers: I hate to start a feeding frenzy but have watched with interest at all of those who are seeking a copy of the Where to Go book. Well, your dream (or nightmare if you lose) may be soon realized, as the item is now for sale on EBAY. It is at the following link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1082360981 You have 3-days and 12 hours to bid as of the moment I type this. FYI, I purchased a copy on EBAY not too long ago, so you might want to email the seller and see if he/she has additional copies. I'd pursue that option before I'd recommend anyone get into a bidding war and pay an outrageous amount for this book. You can also watch "www.abebooks.com", which has a great selection of out of print books, or even www.bn.com (barnes and noble), in its "out of print" section. FYI2, I search EBAY weekly (titles and descriptions) for "centre county", and often find interesting stuff. It's amazing what's out there for sale. Good luck to all. Hi: Although I agree that the 1880 CDs are only a tool, I found that by using asterisks in place of letters, I found several families I would not have found except by going through a whole county on microfilm. If someone has an unusual given name, you can search using that only. Where else can you search by a child's name? I have not had any trouble using the disks except one that was scratched which was replaced, no charge. I found my husband's grandfather and siblings living with their mother and stepfather (all older children/adults) but with the stepfather's surname---which they never used. I found my grandfather "working out" as was his twin brother but with another family. Maybe others follow genealogy rules more than I do, but there were quite a few family members where I had not looked at the 1880 census at all since I had their birth, death and marriage records plus other censuses. This new tool added quite a bit of "meat to the bones" in my genealogy, i.e., new occupations, other relatives living with the family, etc. etc. This purchase was a real bargain! What I most like about this 1880 census is the search capability. These CDs are designed to be searched many ways-- You can of course search by first name, last name. You can search by last name You can search by last name, and birth year. You can search by first name, birth year. If one of your ancestors has a very unusual first name, do a search by first name only and you may get results. You can narrow down any search if you know the county. If you know the town or township you can narrow it down even further plus by clicking on neighbors you can see everyone who resided in that town/township. You can search by birth year and county using NO names. I entered the year 1810, clicked on female, and clicked on Centre. And here's some of the results: FERRAR, Sarah Wife <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Harris FETZER, Mary Mother <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Boggs FIEDLER, Anna Mother <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Miles FLICK, Sarah MotherL <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Worth FOX, Annie Sister <1810> F W Bir: IREL Cen: PA Centre Bellefonte FRANTZ, Mary Wife <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Worth FUNK, Susanna Wife <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre MountEagle GALLAGHER, Mary Mother <1810> F W Bir: IREL Cen: PA Centre Howard GARRETT, Elizabeth Wife <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Bellefonte GOODHART, Martheu Wife <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Gregg GORMERY, Mary Wife <1810> F W Bir: IREL Cen: PA Centre Boggs HASTINGS, Mary MotherL <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Taylor HERSHBERGER, Catherine Other <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Bllefonte HUCKHILL, Margaret Mother <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre College IMBODEN, Frances Self <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Phillipsbu JAMES, Mary Mother <1810> F W Bir: ENGL Cen: PA Centre Rush KREPS, Catharine Mother <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Ferguson LEEBRECH, Lucy Other <1810> F W Bir: PA Cen: PA Centre Huston LERBY, Annie C. Luann, > Can anyone help me with these questions: > -- what census E.D. would I check for someone who lived "near Rock Iron > Works"??? Prior to 1853 Rock Iron Works was in the western part of Spring Township; from 1853 forward, however, it became Benner Township. He probably lived on the old Spring Creek Road -- that area is now all owned by the State Correctional Institution at Rockview. > -- the phrase "he had been in town" -- does that refer to Bellefonte? Yes. Bellefonte was the *major* town, county seat, and home of the Centre Democrat from 1827 to 1989. (It was also founded by Philip Benner, who founded Rock Iron Works and for whom Benner Township was named.) -- any idea where I might look for a marriage record for John +Nancy (first > > child Robert A. Roach born June, 1838...Nancy was born 1820; have no birth > date for John) Check the lists compiled by Gladys Murray and Harold O. Thomen for Centre County Marriages 1800 to 1850. They are in the Bellefonte library and perhaps some list member who has the books can do a look-up. It is important to note that prior to 1885 there was no requirement for registration of marriages (except from 1852 to 1855). Thus, we are dependent upon newspaper articles, J.P. records, church books, etc., to compile these marriage books. > -- the 1840 Federal census index for Patten Twp (where in Blair is that?) > lists > a John Roach on page 186. Does anybody have access to that census??? > > Patton Township was founded about 1794 and named for Col. John Patton. It is just west of Benner Township in the scheme of things (and would have bordered Spring prior to 1853, when Benner was formed). Occasionally the line between Patton and Benner/Spring was confused in early years, it seems, so this could well be your person. Would someone please be so kind as to repeat the source for the CD of the 1880 census that you are all talking about? Thank you in advance.
Hi I have been using the 1880 census CD-ROM since Christmas and love it. Because of the spelling variations, I have searched for people with given name, birth year and county and had a lot of luck finding families. For the families I have looked for, the transcriptions are very good. I have the 1880 census on microfilm, so can check that to verify. If anyone would like me to look up a family, I would be glad to. Suzanne Walkowiak Rice
God bless all of you who prayed for my husband, Bill. He passed away March 6th.
There are several copies of the LDS 1880 census index at the National Archives, SE Branch, and although it can be useful in some cases, overall, we have had a good deal of trouble using it. As stated below, names are not listed that are recorded on the census sheets, many many errs in spelling, in some cases pretty far removed from what it should be. We have also experienced disks that will not run either intermittenly or one that never would run. Like anything else you use in your genealogy quest ... you still need to verify and document your data. Happy hunting! Barb >As the web site shows, there are problems using these disks. As the web site shows, there are problems using these disks. I had problems finding people on these disks in the counties in which I had earlier seen them on the census for 1880. Also, since the names are transcribed, they can be highly inaccurate. Unless you are very familiar with the names in the area as they are in the actual census who would ever think of looking under "Bloomcord" for "Brungard" as one example. However, I searched for the name Heckel and when I couldn't locate the party I was seeking, I keyed in "Heckle" and all sorts of related spellings came up. I found that to be valuable (but, alas, did not find the Heckel I was looking for!).. Like any other such disk, it is a tool and can be very helpful. Hello All, Here is the response from The Centre Daily Times abt. obtaining copies of "Where To Go...": <<From: IPoole@centredaily.com (Isaiah Poole) Date: Mon, Mar 11, 2002, 5:49pm (EST+1) To: Genzen1@webtv.net Subject: Where To Go & Place Names of Centre Co.
