    1. [PACENTRE] doctor's records
    2. Lou Cook
    3. actually some of those doctor's records could be still with his family or donated to historical or genealogical societies. I have records for Dr. Peter McCauley Cook of Webster Mills, Ayr Twnshp, Fulton Co. in latter part of 1800s which I am currently scanning and will put on line. You might contact someone in the area where you are researching. There is sometimes a dirth of info at some of these small libraries. 1. [PACENTRE] Doctors records
    2. Hi Folks; I have an interesting question for everyone. Have you ever wondered what happens to old doctors records? At one time in Philipsburg Pa., there was an old doctor Heaton who passed away in the late 1940's to early 1950's. Granted there are still people living that were seen by him as a child. However he was an old man when he passed away and probably had stopped seeing patients long prior to his death. At one time he was the doctor about town and may have been the only one at some period of time. Boy! What his records could tell us about our ancestors if we could find his records. Leah

    2. Many thanks to all of you folks that responded. It looks like the conusees is that although the birth place looks like M S., it is actually U S. The person giving the information didn't know where his parents were born except in the U S. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but that's the way this hobby goes. You learn a little and get disappointments in other ways. Thanks again Leah

    1. Re: [PACENTRE] Kreamer in Miles Township
    2. Hi Sue, Thanks for the response. <Descendants of Jared B Kramer 1 Jared B KRAMER b: 08 August 1843 in Pennsylvania d: 21 July 1924 in Centre Co - burial in the Luth & Ref Cemetery - Rebersburg, Pennsylvania .. +Joanna MEYER b: 21 June 1847 in Pennsylvania m: 11 April 1869 in Centre Co Pennsylvania> This is definitely the right Kramer. The J.B Kreamer in 1880 was 36. His wife, Joanna was 32. That fits the information you sent. The 1880 Census shows three daughters: Mary age 10; Gertrude age 7; Ada age 3. There is also an Emanuel Confer, male, age 13, relationship OTHER, living with the family. It appears that both Mary Deobler and Emanuel Confer were boarding or working for the Kreamers. I think it was pretty common for children to be farmed our to other families during this time frame. Does anyone know how that worked? Were the children paid or were their parents compensated or was it simply some families had too many mouths to feed? I'm curious about the practice. Diana

    1. [PACENTRE] Shunk in Penn Township 1880
    2. Hi List, I have a ROBERT SHUNK, age 9, living with Henry Snavely and his wife Margaret in Penn Township in 1880. Robert is listed as Henry's nephew. Is anyone researching the name SHUNK or an alternate spelling? I'd like to know who Robert's parents might be. He has to be either Henry's sister's son, or from Margaret's side (I have no idea what her maiden name is). Known sister's of Henry Snavely are: Susan (died at age 12); Rebecca (married a Wingard); Sarah; Harriet (married an Immel); Catherine (married a Lamey); Mary; Rosetta (also called Hannah who married a Wingard). Sarah and Mary are the only unaccounted for sisters of Henry. Sarah was born in 1844 and Mary in 1847. Any information would be a big help! Diana Mason

    1. [PACENTRE] Kreamer in Miles Township
    2. Hi List, Is anyone working on Kreamers/Kramers in Miles Township? I have an 1880 census record for J.B. Kreamer and wife Joanna in Miles Township, and living with them is a Mary Deobler, relationship "Other", age 18. My great-grandmother, Mary Alice Doebler/Deibler, would have been about that age in 1880, and I think this could be her. Any information on this Kreamer family would be a blessing. Diana Mason

Surnames: Stemm, Stamm, Stem, Spangler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kIJBAEB/157.3 Message Board Post: I have read your Stemm Family history postings with great interest. It appears that you are my 5th cousin once removed and are probably related to me also by several marriage(s) involving a Stemm (aka Stamm, Stem) and a Spangler. Catherine Lydia Stamm (Stemm) Spangler [daughter of Johann(as) Adam Stamm] was my ggggrandmother (my father's father's mother's father's mother). She apparently had 14 children (one of whom was my gggrandfather, Samuel Spangler, who served with two of his brothers in a Civil War artillery unit.) Additionally, Catherine Stamm Spangler's brother-in-law (her husband John George Spangler's brother George) married Lydia Ann Stem(m), who was the daugther of a "Nicholas Stem, Jr." All of these folks were from Centre County, PA, and are included in the Spangler Family Genealogy page -- http://www.spanglers.info -- thus, I presume that "Nicholas Stem Jr." is the son of Nicholas Stamm and Catherine Lerch and the brother of Johann Adam Stamm, which would mean that the Spangler brothers referenced above married Stemm/Stamm/Stem cousins. To further entangle the Stamms and Spanglers, Peter S. Spangler, the father of the referenced Spangler brothers, married Catherine Fengel Stem (the widow of Nicholas Jr.), after they had both lost their original spouses. The reference in your Stemm Family history to yet another Stamm/Spangler marriage has me rather baffled, but perhaps you or someone else can clear up the confusion. Your Stemm family history refers to a daughter of Johann Adam Stamm who married a George Spangler from Lockport, IL and states that she died young without any children, though George later remarried and had children named Agnes, Mary, Elmer and Howard. According to the Spanglers.info website, the George Spangler I referred to above (who married Lydia Ann Stem) had two children named Catharine and George, and Lydia died at the age of 79, so I doubt they are the couple referenced in your Stamm Family history. On the other hand, my gggrandfather Samuel Spangler had a brother named George Franklyn Spangler who had children named Agnes, Mary, Elmer and Howard (as well as others) and was a resident of Lockport, IL from at least 1878 until his death in 1897. Since his mother (Catherine Stamm Spangler) was Adam Stamm's sister, it would be easy to see how a 1952 history would make that kind of mistake. His wife was named Catherine Kopp and has a long and productive life, however, so I'm still confused about the reference to someone dying young without children. There is another scenario which may explain this situation. The IL marriage records (searchable at http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/genealogy/marrsrch.html ) show a 1849 Will County marriage of a Sarah Spangler to an Isaac E. Spangler. The 1850 Census records for Will County, IL (searchable at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwill/1850census.htm ) show a newborn child named Agnes living with a 22 year old Sarah Spangler and a 25 year old Isaac E. Spangler in Lockport, Will Co., IL, who are natives of PA. Since (a) this Lockport, IL Sarah Spangler has the same birth year as the Sarah Spangler referred to on the Spanglers.info website as being one of the 14 children of John George and Catherine Stamm Spangler, and (b) Sarah is the only family member not shown on the 1850 Census records in neighboring Plainfield, IL with her parents and the other 11 children born before 1850, I would presume that she was indeed born Sarah Spangler (as the IL Mariage records s! uggest) and perhaps married a distant cousin (no such Isaac is found on the Spanglers.info website so I can't say what their exact kinship was). Interestingly, there is no death date, burial information, marriage info, or children listed for Sarah on the Spanglers.info website, which suggests to me that she died very young (i.e. before any of her Illinois family members) and was probably buried near her husband's Lockport home. It may be that your Stemm Family history confuses Sarah Spangler Spangler with the Sarah Stemm who was one of the otherwise unaccounted for sisters of Adam (et al.) Stemm. It is also conceivable that there never was a Sarah Spangler in the John George and Catherine Stamm Spangler family and that the Sarah Spangler from Lockport,IL was Johann Stamm's daughter and your family history is correct (except for confusing George with Isaac). Given the apparently limited number of potential spouses in Centre County, it may even be the case that Sarah Stamm was originally married to a George Spangler and later married (his brother/cousin?) Isaac when George died. Or perhaps (a) Isaac Spangler was Sarah Stamm's first husband, (b) Isaac was confused with Sarah's Stamm's brother-in-law John George Spangler or her cousin-in-law George in your Stamm Family history, and (c) the IL marriage records were filled out or transcribed wrong. Maybe you or someone out there can shed some light on the mystery of Sarah whomever-she-really-was Spangler. It sounds like a fascinating story no matter what really happened. In any event, thanks for the great info on the Stamm line, Cousin Scott. -------------------------------- End of STAMM-D Digest V02 Issue #11 *********************************** --------------701F2721B9F733CC16C2FE8D--

    2. New info on Boals Gap that I thought I'd share with the list. Boal's Gap is located in Potter Township near the Colyer Lake. It is back of Colyer up against Triester Mountain (the Seven Mountains region). The cemetery there is the Fruittown Cemetery, a little collection of about ten graves in the corner of a field. I suspect it is the remnant of an old United Evangelical congregation. The surrounding area is called Fruittown. 2. Hello All, I am a descendent from families that had moved from Union and Centre Co. PA to Stephenson Co. IL. following is the chat room site for Stephenson Co. on Monday nights. I'm also a member to this list, Lou Cook another member sends this out every Sunday afternoon to all the list members. please join us for genealogy chat on Monday evenings at 8pm CST at > www.freeportillinois.com/index3.htm There is a link on the right side of > the front page of the site. It will take a minute to come up, then put in > your name and put your surnames in the profile. Lou Cook It has helped a lot going back and forth with the two counties. Just two weeks ago I posted a message on the Stephenson Co. board asking about information of a Minister. It turns out, the Minister was in Union Co. and the wedding took place before they left PA. The family history that I started out with was written In the early 1900'S by a Great Great Aunt when she was pretty old. There were several errors in it, But at least she gave me a start! 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Current status of GEORGE AND (MARY) PRICE STAMM research
    2. Karl and all, I really don't know of an exhaustive history of the families that migrated from Central PA to Stephenson Co., IL, but some of my own families went that route. It seems that the soils there very much resemble the limestone-based soils of Central PA. The terrain is similar (although less mountainous), the climate is not that different, etc. When one or two of them went out there, it seems they sent the word back here. Folks, believing there was a greater opportunity in that region, and knowing that their experience in Central PA would serve them well in the similar environment they would find there, moved from here to Illinois by the trainload. And that is mostly how they went. The greatest exodus occurred during the period after the Civil War until the early 1880s. People could catch one of the trains in Bellefonte, take it out to Pittsburgh, and from there travel west through Ohio and Indiana, into Illinois. Somewhere I have a map showing the train route that went almost directly into Chicago. It is for this reason that most of the folks who went there were able to keep in relatively close contact with kinfolk back here, and that oftentimes they would come back to visit PA every so often. Sometimes whole towns out there were transplants from Central Pennsylvania. One of the towns, it is rumored, has two intersecting streets called Centre and Clinton Streets, named after the two counties where many of the settlers came from. Most of the emigrants to the midwest settled in Stephenson County, Winnebago County, and Jo Daviess County in Illinois, and in Green County, Wisconsin. It would be wise to check all these counties for record of an ancestor. Every Monday night there is a chat room open for discussion of families that migrated from PA to the Northern IL/Southern WI region, that may be beneficial to you. I can't think of the website just now but when I see it again I'll pass it along to you all via this list. 1. [PACENTRE] Re: Migration from Centre Co to IL, etc
    2. Gloria Harbach
    3. Karl - I might add to Justin's excellent explanation of the migration to IL that sometimes an entire church congregation would make the move. While Centre County's terrain was beautiful for farm folks, these settlers had very large families and not enough land to give every son his own farm. Also, just as Centre Co beckoned its settlers to come there in the first place, so did IL and WI beckon these same people to go West. As the old saying goes - the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. One of my ancestors traveled from Centre Co to Erie by stagecoach, then across the lake to Detroit where he boarded a train to Michigan City and from there took a stagecoach to Freeport, IL in 1847. When his first wife died in 1865 in IL he apparently took a train to Sugar Valley where he married a widow in 1866 and took her to his home in IL. 1. Re: [PACENTRE] Boals Gap and Tussey sink
    2. Karl, If you can tell me the name of the person, where they died, etc., I may be able to help you with the Boals Gap one. Tussey Sink is another name for that region around Tusseyville in Potter Township. The creek that runs through the area is called Sinking Creek. I know that many things in the area -- including Tussey Mountain -- were named for an early family by that name, of whom almost every trace and record is gone; yet, their name is perpetuated by the countless locales and landmarks which are called by it even today. > 1. "...buried Sunday in the new Cem. at Boals Gap..." as reported in a 5 > Feb 1903 newspaper. > Where is "Boals Gap" and what "new" -- as of 1903 -- cemetery might be > referenced here? > > 2. I see a number of references to Tussey sink, with _sink_ never > capitalized. Is that Tusseyville or some other place? 1. [PACENTRE] KEEN family of Centre Co
    2. Karl Moyer
    3. I'm seeing two separate references to persons named KEEN: 1. Catherine Keen (b. 10 Dec 1801; I have no death date or or location for either the birth or death); married Michael Hockman, for whom I have conflicting birth dates: either 1810 or according to someone else 23 Nov 1799; this couple lived in the house now owned by an Amishman at Spring Bank, east side of PA Rt 445 as just north of the gap between Penns Valley and Brush Valley. Their son Daniel Hockman (12 Oct 1830, Brush Valley - 24 Aug 1910, WaKeeney KS, bur. at Horton KS) and his wife Nancy (Moyer) Hockman named their 4th child Michael Keen Hockman, born in Stephenson Co IL but later moved with parents to Horton KS). So this Keen name made it to Kansas. 2. Elizabeth Keen and husband Adam Stamm of "Tussey sink" had 14 children, of whom the 5th George Stamm was born at Tussey sink 2 July 1808. So this Keen woman might have been born ca. 1775 - 1785. Any info on her? Is it possible that Catherine #1 (above) was the daughter of a brother of Elizabeth (#2 above)? Does anyone perhaps have a good chart, etc., of the Keen family of Centre Co????? Thanx. Cordially, Karl E. Moyer Lancaster PA
