    2. Jean, There is a connection to a Mackeyville HAYS family in a line I am searching that might connect to yours. 1880 Census, Lamar Twp., Clinton Co., PA (90-91): John McCaleb, age 73, farmer, Martha McCaleb, age 65, wife, keeping house, Albert R. 26, son, farmer, Mary 22, daughter in law, housekeeper, John Hays, age 74, uncle (single), Lorenz Robbins, age 26, farm laborer. All born PA, as were parents. From the CLINTON DEMOCRAT of 4 Jan 1883: “Died, Dec. 23, 1882, of pneumonia, at residence of Mr. McCalip, near Mackeyville, Pa., Mr. John Hays, aged 79 years, 7 months, and 14 days.” What I would like to know is whether he is the John W. Hays who married Isabella --- (1814-1849) and had Margaret E., who married William Leathers and moved to Kansas. If not, who was that John W. Hays and what became of him? Any light you can shed on this would be great. Thanks! 3. Pattee - Any connections to my Harris family? Parents William H. and Hannah Harris living around Bellefonte in the 1890's and Philipsurg in 1900. William was a coal miner according to the 1900 federal census. Their children were: John C. Harris (b: about 1874), Mary H. (nee Harris) Woods (b: Between 1875-1878), Bertha (nee Harris) Boalich (b: 17 Mar 1879;d: 17 May 1949), Sarah A. (nee Harris) McCarl (b:10 Sep 1881), Carrie E. Harris (Mar 1894), Naomi (nee Harris) Bell b: Jul 1896), Mabel (nee Harris) Schnars (b: after 1900), and Valma (nee Harris) McClement (b: after 1900). The following Harris obit (Democratic Watchman, Friday, 7 February 1908) is not related to the Harris family of interest to me but someone else may find a connection. "Harris -- Mrs. Harris, wife of Dr. William Harris, of the Northwestern University, Chicago, died in Philadelphia on Monday. She has been in ill health for years and went to Philadelphia six months or more ago for treatment but the disease with which she was afflicted was too far advanced to successfully combat it. Dr. Harris is known in Centre county and with his wife has frequently visited relatives in Bellefonte, and the deceased will be remembered as a most kindly and gracious woman. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, interment being made in Philadelphia." The families settled in this area in the late 1700's-early 1800's and lived there until my great aunt Elinor Cook McDowell's death a few years ago. My Cook family is buried in the Bellefonte Cemetery. My grandmother Abbie Cook was born and raised there, attending the Presbyterian church. Grace Cook, my grandmother's cousin married a banker named Reynold's and their lovely home is now a B&B. My Rankin family had a lovely home across the street from the church that is now a mortuary. I am hoping that someone could have access to Lewis's obituary (d. 1895) or could lookup the record of Enoch and Alathere HEATON in the 1850 census (Lewis is in this household) or the 1860/1870 census. In 1880 he was in Snow Shoe Twp. Lewis's father may have been either John or Jackson Watson. He had a son Theodore, which was my line. Thank you very much. Don Lerew DLerew@messiah.edu

    1. [PACENTRE] Knowing and Honoring Our Ancestors
    2. Hi List, This morning, as I gently and reverently turned the pages of the old Snavely Bible, a thought struck me. What do I really know about these people? Three bookcase shelves are sagging under the weight of twenty-five years of research. Once bare walls are now covered with pictures of farmers in their Sunday best sitting for some long forgotten dead photographer. And this Bible, its' first entry made in German nearly two hundred and fifty years ago, leather cracking, pages yellowing and browning at the edges, ink faded to a soft sable brown. Surely I must know these people by now. But they are all long gone, and nine generations separate me from that first faded entry. How can I possibly know a man who died in 1772? The thought turned over and over in my mind, and then the answer came. I do know him. I may not know what he looked like, or the sound of his voice, but I know a lot about what kind of man he was. I know that he was adventurous - he left his native land behind and sailed across an ocean to a new one. I know that he cared deeply for his family - enough to bring them to a place with a chance of a better life. I know that he was religious - his Bible proves that. I know that he was educated - he signed his name on ship manifests, not needing to use an "X". I know that he raised a family, saw his children born, and buried at least one of them. I know that he was a loving grandfather - two grandchildren are remembered in his will, children of a deceased, but much loved namesake. And I know that he wanted future generations to be proud of their heritage, for, with a bold hand, he lovingly entered the events of his life and those of his children into this wonderful old Bible, and saw to it that it was passed along, ending up in the hands of a many times great-granddaughter whose love of family history he could never have imagined. So, how do I honor this man, and all my other ancestors, both Pennsylvanian and Virginian? How do I honor so diverse a group of people? How do I honor the Snavely who died defending his farm from marauding Indians, and also honor the ancestor who died defending his moonshine still? How do I honor those who fought and died on both sides of the American Revolution? How do I honor those who fell in the Bloody Lane at Antietam or died in the hail of fire at Cold Harbor because they believed in a cause, and still honor those who gave the last full measure in order to hold the Union together? How do I honor my great-great-great grandmother whose grave stands among so many other Snavely graves in Paradise Cemetery, and also honor my great-grandfather whose grave stands alone on a windy hilltop in southwestern Virginia? Where would I place a monument to their memory, and is it possible to express a sentiment that would do justice to all that they were? No monument will suffice, but I can honor them by keeping their memory alive, and by passing that memory along to future generations. After all, I am the future generation that my many times great-grandfather was thinking of when he made those entries in his Bible over two centuries ago. He is challenging me not to let him down, for if I do, I will not only fail him and future generations, but all those generations which went before. Maybe, after nine more generations have passed, some distant descendant will read my family books, and again take up the challenge. Family history is, after all, an ongoing event. Diana Mason

    3. Hi all -- Since registering with this board, I have gotten tremendous help and made substantial progress on my research on descendents of James Watson who came to Centre County sometime before 1789. He was one of two James Watsons in the area at the time and another James seemed to have come from Ireland a bit later. So many people have helped, but I want to thank Jean Corio in particular for her information on marriages which have been extremely helpful. At this point, I have information on 10 of the 13 children of James Watson. I am still looking for research on the following: John Watson, born about 1774(?), son of James and Ann (Evans) Watson. He appears to be the oldest son and was alive in 1822 when James made out his will. James Watson, born March 20, 1783, alive in 1822. He was also the son of James and his first wife Ann. All I know about James is that he may have managed a hotel and tavern, later known as the Conrad House, for his brother-in-law John Irvin and he was the witness to the will of John Irvin of Harris Township in 1843. John Irvin was the father of General James Irivn, the benefactor of State College. Hattie Watson seemed to be a younger child and was the daughter of James and his second wife Agnes Graham. Hattie is mentioned in the will and no place else that I can find. If anyone could add to any of this information, I would appreciate it. Also, if anyone would like any of the information I have put together about this Watson line, please let me know. Again, sincere thanks for all your help! Janet Watson

    1. [PACENTRE] Introduction
    2. John Russell-Curry
    3. Greetings, I'm joining your list and wanted to share some of the names in Centre Co., PA I am researching: COOK/RANKIN/HARRIS/PETRIKEN/BLAIR/EAKEN/MCGINLEY My families lived in Bellefonte, Milesburg, and Penn's Valley primarily. The families settled in this area in the late 1700's-early 1800's and lived there until my great aunt Elinor Cook McDowell's death a few years ago. My Blair family lived in Milesburg. My Eaken/Eakin family lived in Penn's Valley. Any and all help is greatly appreciated in exchanging information. Pattee

    1. Re: [PACENTRE] Spangler Books
    2. Carolyn, A lady named Mrs. Adella F. Spangler and her husband, Newton, went around the county in the 1920s-1940s collecting genealogical information of every kind. Mrs. Spangler was active in the DAR, and acquired the information for her research. She recorded over 113 cemeteries in the county, years and years of newspaper clippings and articles -- both those that she clipped herself and abstracted from visits to the local newspaper archives -- tax records transcripts (some of the originals of which have since disappeared, making them an invaluable guide), church records, family Bible abstracts she gleaned from visits with local families, genealogies given by people she spoke with, and many other types of records. There is a 250,000 card index file to her work, which includes 175 notebooks, 20 scrapbooks, and over 100 composition notebooks. She did a tremendous volume of work, and her compilations, which are available in the Centre County Library, Bellefonte, serve as the most centralized collection of Centre County records, and are well worth examining.
