The England family lived in Centre Co. and Isaac England moved to Altoona, Pa as did my John Davis Hughes family. There is a scrapbook on the web kept by Mary England that I posted info on a few weeks ago that has obits on this family. ANNIE ENGLANDs Scrapbook In the "History of Centre & Clinton Co.'s PA" by Linn, he states that "bros. Jacob & Thomas Hicks were in Patton twp before the arrival of the Gray's and Hartsocks who came in 1788. The L.AMBOURNES were also early settlers but the father soon died and the children have removed to the west, except Isaac and Ephraim, who settled in Stormstown, Pa." Isaac HICKS b. c. 1780 in PA (acc. to the 1880 Census of Hannah Hughes, father b. in Pa) had brothers: Jacob Giles Hicks b. c. 1760 in Caroline Co. Pa. who married Elsie Lamborn, dtr. of Josiah & Sarah (Jackson ) Lamborn and lived in Centre Co. before relocating to Indiana, Pa. Another brother, Thomas Hicks b. c. 1780 in Caroline Co., MD married Susannah Lamborn, another dtr. of Josiah & Sarah Lamborn. (I have the whole Lamborn History) This brother went West with the Mormons and reportedly died in an epidemic in MO. The Lamborn Family History book states that Susannah (Lamborn) Hicks m. Jacob Hicks and descendants were living in Chicago, Ill. in 1894. (no further info) I am working on a three ring notebook with Lamborn, Hicks and Hughes family info that I am donating to the Bellefonte Library next week when I am in Pa. It will have family charts, pics, obits, articles and various info that I have collected over the years. There is also one that I placed in the Blair Co. Gen. Soc. on my Westbrook/Simpson and Hughes/Hicks/Lamborn line. Jean Corio Tampa, Fl

    2. Furnish, Victor
    3. Seeking whatever information others may have concerning Johannes Andreas (usually known as Andreas or Andrew) FELLER (b. 1775, PA), and his wife Anna Maria (aka Mary . . . ). The FELLER surname sometimes appears as "FOLLER" (originally, with an umlauted "o"), FELLERS, FELLOWS, or even FULLER. [Andrew's brother, Johannes (aka John, 1774-1840) also resided in Centre County, but by 1820 was living in Fairfield Co, OH. Their father was Andreas, of Northampton Co, PA.] In the 1810 census Andrew's household is listed in Haines Twp (Millheim town), and in the censuses of 1820 and 1830 it is listed in Miles Twp. (By ca. 1836 he was in Stark Co, OH.) Children (prob. all born in Centre Co.) seem to have included: Catharine (b. 1805) a daughter (b. 1807) Daniel (b. 1810) Andreas (b. 1812) Sarah (b. 1814) Wilhelm (b. 1817) Magdalena (b. 1820) Tobias Bickel (b. 1825) Israel (b. 1829). I am especially interested in documentation verifying that Daniel (b. 1810) was indeed a son. -- Victor Paul Furnish Dallas, TX

    2. Sue, The Swampoodle Cemetery at Milesburg, although originally apparently the Boileau family cemetery, was supposed to have been utilized for this purpose, although there are other interments there as well. Some of our other cemeteries may have been started for this purpose but I have no way at present to relate to you which ones these may be. 1. [PACENTRE] MORE WOODRING/WOOTRING INFO
    2. Hi I just found this Woodring info on a sheet with the obit of my Jacob Hicks. "Democratic Watchman" Bellefonte, Pa Friday, Nov. 17, 1905 "WOODRING FAMILY REUNION" The following family reunion notice is of a peculiar historic interest to the WOODRINGS in this County, as they and the WOTRINGS refered to below are descendants of the same family and relatives. The notices says: "An interesting reunion of the WOTRING family was held last week at Sand Spring Grove near Macungie, Pa on the old WOTRING Farm which as been in the family during about a century. In 1770 the premises was granted by the Penns to Samuel WOTRING, who built the first grist mill in this vicinity. It is beleived that he came here from France in 1732. At the recent reunion an organization was affected with R.D. WOTRING, as President. Rev. W. D. WOTRING, Reformed Pastor, at Nazareth, was appointed historian. Addresses were made by Rev. A.G. PETERS of Bethlehem, and Rev. W. H. WOTRING, of Nazareth. The reunion next year will be held in the Sand Spring Grove on Aug. 11, 1906. The names WOTRING, WATTERING, WOTTRING AND WOODRING are derived from the Alsace, Lorraine French Voiturin. In the early records of the Egypt and Union churches in Lehigh Co., the name is spelled in every possible way. The pastors generally wrote the name Phonetically, but Rev. Abraham BLUMER, Reformed minister, who could speak French and once received a call from a french Reformed church in NY always wrote it VOITURIN or VOITRIN. In German the name would be pronounced WOTTERING or WOTRING. The oldest analicized way of spelling the name is WOTRING. Thus it appears on the record of Immigrants which landed at Phila between the years 1723 and 1727." Spangler Collection - Notebook 146 pg. 134 at Bellefonte, Pa Library. Jean Corio Tampa, Fl

I am looking for a HUGHS/HUGHES connection to either family. Thanks! Jean Corio Tampa, Fl

    3. My grandfather dipped snuff, Copenhagen to be exact. I was a teenager and it was the first time I had ever seen anyone do that. Until that point, I had always thought only people in the South did that. I don't know where I got that thought from, but that is what I believed. I remember just how gross it was to watch him spit...ugh! Both he and his wife came from a family of long-time coal miners, though he himself wasn't one. He had myriad of jobs in his lifetime, but his last job was owning a Texaco station in Philipsburg. Susan

    3. In the Nineteenth Century, it took too much time to roll a cigarette. Most men didn't take the time. Easier to chew tobacco than to smoke it. Many men smoked a pipe or an occasional cigar, but cigars were too expensive for daily use, and the pipe was usually relagated to the evening relaxing moments, which were few. Factory cigarettes are a 20th Century thing. ----- Original Message ----- From: <surchr@att.net> To: <PACENTRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 27, 2002 10:16 AM Subject: [PACENTRE] tobacco > Folklore? > > My grandfather and several uncles chewed tobacco most of their lives. 2. My grandfather chewed tobacco, as did his brothers and sons, all of whom worked in the coal mines of Southwest Virginia. One of my uncles, a miner, told me that it kept their mouths from getting dry and dusty. I don't think it did anything for their lungs, as several of them died from black lung. On the lighter side, my great aunt also chewed tobacco. Unless she was trying to keep flour dust out of her lungs while baking, I suspect her chewing was just a bad habit picked up from her hubby. It might even have been self-preservation! Diana Mason

    2. Folklore? My grandfather and several uncles chewed tobacco most of their lives. I asked my grandfather how come ?? He said men who worked in lumber mills chewed tobacco to keep the sawdust from going into their lungs. Since tobacco juice is not swallowed but spit out. Any truth to this?? Must have worked for them - they all lived past 90 years of age. Any comments are welcome. Arline
