    1. [PACENTRE] CCGS Cemetery Project
    2. Ellen
    3. Several of you have written me asking for details on release dates of upcoming cemetery books. Please, just watch the CCGS web pages for the announcements: http://www.rootsweb.com/~paccgs/ Also, if at all possible, we will post a notice on this list when a book is ready, referring you to the web pages for details. As far as when various area books will be available, that all depends on the dedication of our volunteers. Please realize that the production of a quality book is a task that requires many hours of tedious labor in the cemeteries and at the computer. We check and re-check things on site as we do the lay-out of the pages and discover something that just doesn't look quite right. Of the over 150 cemeteries in Centre Co, we have the notes for all but about a half dozen. However, that is merely the first step in the process, and in many ways, it is really the easiest step. We only have about 5 or 6 volunteers who are actively helping us in the compilation of our books. One of them is Justin, and he's over-extended on his time commitments, as are the rest of us who are holding down full time jobs and have many other commitments. Please be patient. As interested parties out of town, there isn't much you could do to help -- I wish there were! Just watch the web page and this list. Of course, if you join the CCGS, you will get a nice "member only" discount on all book purchases. Some folks find that if they are planning to purchase a few books, it more than pays for their membership that year! See the web pages for membership information and fee schedule. Ellen

    1. [PACENTRE] Gold Star Mothers and COLEMAN
    2. >Can someone tell me if it was necessary to have a son die in the service = >to become a Gold Star mother?  HI List ! Back after 11 mos off. Yes, Gold Star Mothers were those that lost children in the war/s. The USPS ( the the Post Office Dept. ) issued a stamp in honor of Gold Star Mothers in the late 1940's or 50's, a 3 center. Any stamp collectors shop would have one, if they stock US stamps, maybe cost you .25 cents. It would make a nice addition to a Family Album page, or ask for a " Block of Four". 3. Justin,Sue and Group It is correct, a "Gold Star" pin was given to the mothers of US Servicemen killed during the Wars. This practice continued through the Viet Nam war, and possibly longer. My grandmother received a Gold Star when my uncle died in Viet Nam in 1968. The family arranged for all of his siblings to receive the pin as well. Brenda

    1. [PACENTRE] Re: Philpsburg Cemetery
    2. Ellen
    3. Hi John (and others interested in the interments in this cemetery), The publication committee of the Centre County Genealogical Society is working feverishly on the Rush Twp book. We had hoped to have it available this past spring, but when we were given the oportunity to photocopy and compare over 100 years of records from the Philipsburg cemetery, it slowed the project. We are in the process of: 1. checking every name from the records to see if they have a tombstone, if so if the death year is on the stone 2. checking every name from the records who does not have a stone, and trying to figure where they are buried, so it can be noted in the book The second item is the slow down on the project. Also, when a burial record says 'Buried Mrs. John Smith' or 'Buried Baby' or 'Buried Baby Smith' and no more information, it becomes a guessing game at times. Except for the checking of the records, the book is done and indexed. We just need to add the appropriate information, once the information is placed, etc. Although it may sound simple, it is very complex and we suffer from a lack of local volunteers willing to check the obituaries to verify who 'Mrs. Smith' was. Rest assured that we are hoping the book will be available this fall, and I will be sure to mention on this list that it is available. Do keep tabs on the CCGS web pages, as our new books are always announced on there. Also, another new cemetery book is LIKELY to be published before the end of August (this is NOT Rush Twp but I will not say any more), so keep tuned for the info. 1. [PACENTRE] Aged Resident of Centre County
    2. Good afternoon, listmembers, I ran across this article concerning one of the oldest citizens of our county and I wanted to share it with the list. This way, too, it will be permanently archived. >From the CENTRE DEMOCRAT of 1 Apr 1943: "It was at the Old Chimney Spring where the famous centenarian of the Barrens, Mrs. Elizabeth Stanton, spent some of her days, about which many legends cluster, so said old folks with whom this writer visited during the first visits to the Barrens, 1898-1902. Mrs. Stanton, a sprightly, kindly, and well-liked old lady, died at her home between Waddle and Scotia in Patton Township on September 23, 1892, aged 117 years. A family Bible given to one of her ancestors by a missionary among the Conestoga Indians attested to her birth at Big Chickies, Lancaster County, in 1775. On her death bed she said, 'I am ready to go. I have lived two lives already.' The venerable lady had some of the noble blood of the Conestogas, exterminated by the Paxton Boys at the Conestoga Village, and the Lancaster Work House, late in 1763. Mrs. Stanton's life was an eventful as well as busy one. At 80 she was able to do a man's work in the harvest field. Strangely enough she had never seen a railroad train until within two years of her death, when she walked 12 miles to Bellefonte and was given a ride on a locomotive by Steve Cresswell, a kindly Bald Eagle Valley engineer. She was a great hiker, and up to about 1850 when 75 years old it was nothing to hike 150 miles through an unbroken forest from the Barrens to Stanton's Creek, McKean County, where she had a number of relatives. Under the barrel of her rifle was stuck a needle, so she could shoot straight in case of attack, as she had to pass through the same dark forests where Betsy MacCumber, E. E. 'Doc' Lewis tells us mysteriously disappeared." Sue, I have heard that soldier's deaths were represented by Gold Stars on various monuments. The line above from Nancy Jane's obit seems to indicate that Gold Star status was indeed indicative of losing a child in the War. 1. [PACENTRE] PACENTRE(Niesz)
    2. Sue Renkert
    3. Dianna, Have you tried the censuses for 1800 through his date of death? Look for someone with the same or similar surname. Try some spellings that sound like Niesz - census takers often guessed! In Pennsylvania for 1790, for example, there are lots of people named Nace in Berks and Bucks County. In Dauphin County, there is a Nease and a Neese and several Nighs. There are also Nice, Nace, Naess, etc. By 1810, there are three strong possibilities in Haines Township, which is where Aaronsburg is located. William, Peter and Philip Nice, on pages 191 and 192. Philip and Peter both have a son in the 10-15 year old bracket, and so does William. I would guess that one of these is your John's family. You can contact the Centre County library Pennsylvania Room to request lookups. They have a great deal of information there. Also, Justin Houser (JKHouser84@aol.com) does research in Centre County for a very reasonable fee. He knows the area as well as anyone. My Brillharts lived in Aaronsburg at the same time as your Nices/Nieszs. I'll try to remember to keep an eye open for the name. In two separate messages, I am sending you copies of the 1810 census entries. They will be sent as attachments. Please let me know if you are not able to open them, and I will try sending them a different way. Good luck in your research!
