Janet, I apologize! I was in Clearfield County Historical Library yesterday and saw some Culbertson/Watson information and was thinking we already had that in our joint possessions! That library is only open 3 hours on Sunday and 3 hours on Thursday, and it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to drive there, so it's not an easy place to collect information. Work fast, make copies and read later!!! I do think that Chris Watson (not my line supposedly) who works there part time would be glad to make a copy. Only way I know of to contact him is through the Clearfield County web page??? There was some Watson Graham data there also and it did not look new to me either. I did copy several obits and will share those with our Centre/Clearfield Watson researchers. Janet, Since there was a will he probably owned property. You will want to search the old Centre County deeds to see if the heirs signed off at a later point to relinquish claim to the land in favor of one of them, or perhaps selling it to some other person. In that manner you will find out where they were living, most likely, and the husbands of the daughters. You also will want to look at everything filed with the will. In Centre Co. each estate is in its own envelopes with lots of accounts, receipts, petitions, etc. You may find that John or Hattie signed a receipt and put their town of residence at the top, and dated it, when they got their share. Also a petition filed to move along the estate may list all the survivors, who they married, and where they were living at the time. Hattie is definitely a nickname for Harriet. I have seen Hattie, Hettie, and even Hal as nicknames for Harriet in the 1800s; also for Henrietta. HI All - I continue to research my Watson line and now have information on all but two of my ancestors children. I have linked up with a few other people who are also researching their Watson ancestors and we are trying to get complete information about all the Watson lines in Centre County and surrounding areas hoping that we can straighten out all the James, Thomas, Johns, and Williams once and for all. I am looking for information on a son John born about 1774 and mentioned in his fathers will in 1822, so I presume he was still alive. I do not have a copy of the will -- just some notes that someone made. Several people in our Watson research group have ancestors who are of the correct age to be children of John, so if I find the names of his children we either eliminate him as a possibility or celebrate a breakthrough. I am also looking for marriage information for Hattie Watson, who was the youngest child, probably born after 1804 so possibly married around 1824 or so. Is Hattie a nickname for Harriet? Does anyone have any advice about how to proceed? Is it likely that there will be any additional information about John in the actual will such as the place he was living? Other sources? I consider myself still a novice at this, so if anyone has any advice, I would be grateful. Janet Watson

Where might I find the journal of James HARRIS - 1784 surveying expedition of land that is now a part of Centre and Huntingdon Counties? Is the journal possibly in a library or a private collection? LINN listed all or part of the journal in his 1883 "History of Centre County PA" - see pgs 21 & 22. I would like to know more about the expedition and those who were a part of this group. Maryann, Below is probably the journal you are searching. Just so you know how to search for things like this: First to http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/ The National Union Collection of Manuscript Collections. I put into the search box: James Harris and got over 200 entries. I narrowed it down with a new search: James Harris Pennsylvania. This is a good way of finding good things. This is only two leaves and does not have too much but may give a clue to the Journal you are searching. Be sure to search both manuscript collections as they will produce different results. Title: Land surveys in Bedford and Centre counties, Pa., 1785 and 1837. Description: 2 leaves. Notes: In the University Archives/Penn State Room, University Libraries, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa. (MSVF/XXX-0118U) Unrestricted access. One survey is a draught of a tract of land in Harris Township, Centre County, Pa., containing 163 acres and 74 perches surveyed on 15 June 1837 for John Krumrine by Jacob Bollinger. The second survey is a true copy draught of a tract of land near the head waters of Spring Creek in Bedford [now Centre] County, Pa., containing 437 acres and 128 perches surveyed on 8 September 1785 for James Hartley by George Woods. Greetings, My name is Bob Reifsneider and I just joined several lists in the Lock Haven area. I am posting to all of these lists hoping for success, and sincerely apologize for the cross posting. I am the son of Catherine BOEHM, who was born in 1914, in Shenandoah, PA, and Clarence REIFSNEIDER. My mother was the daughter of Margaret HAUGHNEY, born 1885, in Mahanoy City, PA, and John BOEHM, born 1879, in Gilberton, PA. Margaret HAUGHNEY had twin sisters, Clara and Mary, born 1879, also in Mahanoy City. Clara was married twice, to brothers. First to Perry Stephen CROAK, then to William G., both born in Clinton County. I have had much success tracing them and their 10 children except one daughter, Anna May, who married Frank GARDNER. However, I have come up with a big goose egg finding Mary, Clara's twin, so I'm expanding my search area. Mary HAUGHNEY married Edward BREWER. My mother tells me that they had no children and that they also lived in the Lock Haven area. Edward may have been the son of Pete BREWER and ??? ??????, and have had the following siblings: William; Scott; Mary; Clara; and Jennie. I also have a note that says that Mary died in MAY 1945, but don't recall where that note came from. Many thanks for everyone's help, Bob Reifsneider Orange Park, FL

Those researching German ancestors who were from Eastern European countries including Romania, Austro-Hungarian Empire, etc. may want to join the Rootsweb BANAT list. My grandfather, George Becker, immigrated from Hungary to America through Ellis Island in the early 1900's. In the late 1700's, Hungary opened its borders to German settlers, offering them land grants. Many of the villages from the area known as the BANAT have "Familienbuchs"--books written which list every family (parents, children, marriages, dates, etc.) who lived in the town from the late 1700's through the mid-1940's. Several members of the BANAT list had the Familienbuch from my grandfather's home town (Tscherwenka/Crvenka) and supplied me with copies of the pages pertaining to my family--many German families who had migrated there from different areas of Germany. A very knowledgeable and helpful list.
The books are back from the printer, and I've asked the web master to post the ordering information on the CCGS web site on or about August 23. The books look great!!!! No sales will be made prior to the Grange Fair. Mail ordered books will not be shipped until after Sept 1. Ellen
The following was posted by Carolyn Shearer on the PAFRANK list. Many names. And good luck. Please note: I have no further information about these names or the site. Marybeth Corrigall =================== << Here is another great site for early PA marriages. While filed under Lancaster County, Rev. John Casper Stoever was an itinerant minister who traveled widely in PA. Remember also that he was German, so when searching for nonGerman ancestors you need to be creative with the spelling. eg Montgomery is "Mt. Linda, Thanks for the enlightening info re: Podkarpackie. I only knew that it was the name of the province after the 1999 redistricting in Poland. Do you have ancestry there? If so I'd love to communicate with you further about that. I have now identified 12 immigrants of the IWANICKI surname (called EVINSKY in our branch) who came from Stefkowa, my ancestral village, to America via Ellis Island. Tracing them I see that many are related and probably all are somehow kin of my great-great-grandfather, Peter IWANICKI (EVINSKY). As far as German research goes, I cannot say that I have done all that much original research. My German lines basically are in one of two groups: 1) the "Church People," that is the Lutherans and Reformed who came to Pennsylvania in the period from about 1730 to 1760; and 2) the Plain People. A large number of my ancestors were Mennonites or Brethren of one sort or another. With the first group I have found the books of Annette Burgert to be invaluable in identifying ancestral villages, from whence I can order the microfilms of local parish records into the nearest LDS center and scour them for additional data. I've only done this a few times at present, though I have many microfilms on my list to get. You can get the film numbers online at www.familysearch.org. I have a number, also, that were 1709ers through New York State, and the work of Henry Z. Jones has proved of great aid in tracing these lines. Most of those went into Tulpehocken in Berks County and I go to that Historical Society at least once a year to glean more data. They have a fabulous annual dinner in November of each year at Trinity Tulpehocken UCC -- the church which my 8th great grandfather, Hans Georg Noll, helped organize in the 1740s. My Anabaptist roots have been well researched by many. I am a member of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and their quarterly publication, "Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage" contains MUCH in the way of documentary evidence on these families. Jane Evans Best's work on my Groff and Bär lines has been phenomenal, and I have it as published in the magazines, as well as purchasing her book. She has studied many of the original parish and civil records in Switzerland and Germany, documenting the early ancestry. I have bought a number of published genealogies of Mennonite families in Lancaster County and, as these tie together one way or another, I have picked up information also. One of my ancestral lines, Schürch, has a very active family organization of which I am proud to say I am a member and one of the official historians. We have two branches, in North America and in Switzerland. Much research has been done into various original records by the historians of the association, and many books have been published documenting the relationships as known. We just had a wonderful reunion at Lancaster, PA last month -- I know that, from this list, myself and Judy Offen were privileged to attend. I am just so thrilled to have what I do have, and am very thankful to everyone who has shared information along the way. Were it not for this sharing of data I would be nowhere near as far along as I am in the search. The next big frontier is the research of my Carpatho-Rusyn roots in southeastern Poland. My grandmother, who is 100% Carpatho-Rusyn, is now 77 years old and I would like very much to present her with a volume of her ancestry so that she can know her heritage. It has always been a mystery beyond her grandparents. The research is tough, as I do not know the language, and it took a long time to figure out where to write. I have written letters to the village priests in the hometowns of my great-grandparents, using a Polish translator, and am hoping that I will receive something in reply. I'm not sure that I gave you many insights into how to do German research, but maybe you've gleaned something from my note.
