My Centre county Boyds moved to Ohio about 1813. Elizabeth Boyd b. 1778 married William Watson b. 1771 in Centre county. When he died in 1810, she remarried Hugh McClelland. These Watson and McClelland families moved to Seneca county Ohio, Bloom township. Elizabeth Boyd's sister, Nancy, b. 1787 married James Steele b. 1773. They also married in Centre county. Nancy Boyd Steele died and James moved his Steele family to Ohio in the 1820's - 30's. A daughter of James and Nancy Boyd Steele. Martha G. Steele, married an Isaac Pennington. According to the 1850 census Isaac and Martha Steele Pennington lived with the Boyd, Steele, Watson, McClelland, and Donnel (another Boyd sister, Mary) families in Bloom Township, Seneca County Ohio. Isaac Pennington was born 1823 in Pennsylvania, according to the census. Living next to Isaac Pennington is a John Pennington b. 1804 PA and his wife, Mary Pennington b. 1807 OH. The others in that household, all born in OH, are, Henry b. 1840, Lovina b. 1833, Philip b. 1835, Solomon b. 1839. I don't know if these Watsons and Penningtons are related to your families but there continues to be some connection here, as they both married into the Boyd family. My roadblock is Sarah Belle (Sadie) Pifer b. 1875 in Centre County. She went out west with family. Father and Mother died young in Colorado and all children came back to PA except Sadie who had married an Alfred Marshall. She then married a Brown in Idaho, Ada County. Returning back to PA she died enroute -- no date or place. Betty in TN

Hi Heather, We have corresponded on the WATSON > HEATON kinship before. I am also a CONFER descendant. Philip of whom you speak was my 6th great-grandfather. While it was thought he had died in Oct. 1831, it was later discovered that he was being confused with a different Philip, his nephew, who died in Aaronsburg at that time. According to the assessment records -- only recently discovered after having been missing for decades -- Philip of Howard Township died ca. 1825-1826. In November I was able to document the location of this Philip's residence in Bald Eagle Valley, in what is now Liberty Township along Hunter Run (formerly Confair Run). Philip squatted on the property without a warrant beginning ca. 1808, although he was probably responsible for the first improvements thereon. His son, John Confer (c1791-1840), my 5th great-grandfather, formally purchased the property and it has remained in Confer possession to this day (2007) with the exception of the years 1869-1874 when it was sold out of the family for payment of debts. It does appear that the property has been the Confer residence all of that time, however, almost 200 years. John Confer's wife is unknown, but I think she may have been the Margaretha Confer who sponsored a baptism at the Nittany Valley Union Church in Jacksonville very early. Their son, David Fulton Confer (1827-1907), was my 4th great-grandfather. He married Prudence Bennett (1833-1905), whom he met while employed in lumbering in western Clearfield County (probably in the company of his brother William, as well as Samuel Wagner of Blanchard, and a few other sons of Liberty Township). They came back to the homestead and their daughter, Margaret Jane Confer McKean (1850-1935) was my 3rd great-grandmother. She is alive through the memories of many who are still living today and I have collected several stories. Through the persistent research of Patricia Shirock of Emmaus, PA, and the travels of Beth Bamat Steffan to Neuchatel, Switzerland, we have pieced together the Confer descendancy from the 14th century, from Guillaume du Rups, Convert, a medieval vine-grower of Auvernier, Canton Neuchatel. I dare say that the Confer line is the one to which I have given the most persistent research attention over the years, and on which I've done the most original research. I'm happy to share information. Researching history of the George Oldham family. George was born in in West Bromwich, Staffordshire England around 1830. He and his sons Herbert, Samuel T. and Albert immigrated to the U.S in 1881. George's son, Samuel T. OLDHAM lived in Rush Township, Centre County, PA in 1910 with his wife Sarah Ann SIMS (born in Ohio), and children Grace (she later married Samuel STINE of Osceola Mills, PA), Frederick W. (he later married Kathryn APEL of Ebensburg, PA), Samuel A. (he later married Marion LOVE of Ernest, PA), Rose (she later married Lester GREEN), and Margaret (she died around 1925). Samuel T. Oldham and Sarah Ann Sims were listed on the 1900 census in Baldwin Township, Allegheny County and in 1920 in Cambria Township, Cambria County. Samuel T. Oldham died in 1922 and Sarah Ann Sims Oldham died in 1921 in Cambria County and are buried in Osceola Mills, PA. Herbert Oldham married Mary Smith (b. PA around 1874 to Benjamin Franklin Smith and Hannah Margaret Lamb) and was living around Confluence, PA at some point. I do not believe that Albert ever married. I think Samuel T. Oldham's additional brothers--George Jr., William and John also immigrated to the US (PA) and may have settled in the area. In addition to Centre County, the family and descendants lived in the counties of Clearfield (Decatur, Osceola Mills), Allegheny (Swissvale), Indiana (Ernest), Cambria (Colver), and Blair (Altoona area). I am also researching the family history of Sarah Ann SIMS. Her father Samuel SIMS, also lived in the Samuel T. OLDHAM household in 1910 in Rush Township, Centre County. Samuel SIMS immigrated from Wales sometime before 1880. In 1880, he was living in Cambria County (around Lloydsville) with his wife Anna E. and their children Sarah Ann (born Ohio) and Liddie (born PA), plus James and Mary STEEL (both born in Ohio) who were listed on the census as his stepson and stepdaugher. I do not know what became of Liddie Sims; James or Mary Steel or Samuel Sims' wife Anna E (or her last name), or when and where Samuel Sims died. Samuel Sims was listed as widowed on the 1910 Census in Rush Township, Centre Co. --Maggie [email protected]
