List -- I've been thinking of some folks I knew of (did not know them intimately) when I was growing up in the State College area ca 1939-1959. If we have any KRUMRINE or LOWER reseachers among us, perhaps they can answer my questions -- 1 - First, concerns a man I simply knew of as "Tuffy" Krumrine who ran a bicycle shop in State College. His shop was located on the Ferguson Twp. end of the borough of State College, perhaps a block or so off of West College Avenue. If I knew what "Tuffy's" real name was, perhaps I could find out more about him and his family. Although I do not have Krumrine direct blood-line ancestry, a lot of Krumrines are kin to me through marriage(s). 2 - I'm also wondering if anyone knows who "Butch" Lower was. "Butch" was what we today might refer to as one of "The Little People." I doubt that he was much more than 3' tall. This surname was not pronounced as we think of the word "lower" being pronounced -- rather it rhymed with Flower, Bower or Cower. The earlier German spelling for this surname was probably Lauer. Butch, too, lived on the Ferguson Twp. end of the town of State College, though I am thinking his home was probably actually in College Township somewhere not far from the present-day Autoport Motel & Restaurant. My birth family lived on a rental farm one winter (1944-45) not far from Butch's family and "our" farm was just off W. Whitehall Road. 3 - As mentioned in question 2, my parents and our family lived on a rental farm just off W. Whitehall Rd. As I look at a current map of the area, I'm guessing "our" farm was at the end of what is marked Oakhurst Ln. near the YMCA. Our landlord for that one brief winter was a John McCoy who owned McCoy's Dam just N. of Bellefonte near Pleasant View or Red Roost. I should modify that statement to say "as far as I know" he owned "our" farm. At least that's where my Dad would hand deliver the rent checks each month. Can anyone give me more details on our old landlord McCoy? "Off the top of my head," I'd guess he was the John McCoy who m. Mary Harris 3-8-1911 (Centre Co. mar. Bk 16, p 596) but, if so, he must have moved to the "dam site" sometime after 1930 as on that census he appears to be residing on W. Curtin St. in Bellefonte. As you can imagine, the answers to these questions are mostly to satisfy my curiosity about some people and not because I NEED to know, genealogically. Thanks for your help. Fred Houts
I should also add that Sue Rossman was in the library at the same time and it was her e-mail this evening that prompted me to get this information out quickly! Good evening, listers, This afternoon a most fortunate event occurred. I had popped into the library in Bellefonte to spend a couple hours working on updating the branches of the Houser family tree, when a lady named Paula Hay, came in asking about Benner Township one room schoolhouses. Since I had helped write the 150th Anniversary History of Benner Township, I was able to provide her with some information. In the course of our conversation, I learned that she runs a most interesting enterprise, called "The Rabbit Mountain Almanac," in the tradition of that larger-than-life character Gottlieb Boonastiel, the pen-name of Tom Harter of the old Keystone Gazette. (Tom Harter, in fact, is a 1st cousin 5 times removed of yours truly.) It is a weekly e-mail news magazine, billed as a "compendium of useful information and entertainments for Centre Countians." It appears to have a focus on the history and culture of this region, as well as listing current cultural events of relevance in the area. She was very interested to learn about our Centre County e-mail list, and particularly the penchant for old recipes here. She recently did some articles on recipes taken from the files of the old Democratic Watchman newspaper in Bellefonte, which seemed very appropriate to our discussions here. She also did an article about efforts to preserve the old Rock Hill one room school in Linden Hall, Harris Township, a quest which led her to inquire about other one room schools, including the ones we have here in Benner Township. At any rate, I thought that the members of the list should be apprised of its existence. You can check the archives of this e-mail news-magazine and subscribe to it through this website: http://rabbit-mountain.com/archives Just wanted to pass on this very interesting item, as I'm sure many of you will want to know about it. Hi Justin, What family bibles does the library have? Kim
Volumes 1-3 are available, covering 1800-1885. The Centre Co. Marriage CD includes all marriages on vols. 1-3 (though not in as much detail) as well as nearly 800 additional marriages found in records discovered since these books were published. It is indeed unfortunate that Pennsylvania did not standardize marriage recording until 1885, and many marriages were conducted without a record being made. This is evident from many Civil War pension files I have ordered, which generally have listed marriage dates, but when asked for a source or record, most people could only claim a certificate in their possession, a family Bible, or memory. Occasionally transcripts were made from J.P. dockets for the pension files, so we know they existed, but these were privately held and we know the whereabouts of only a handful today. Good Day, I would like to know in these marriage books - CD'S if there are any marriages between a " Wagner-Wagoner man and a Hassinger lady " Any help would be appreciated. In Central Pennsylvania Marriages by Charles A. Fisher. p. 80, I found a George Larue of Dauphin Co., m. to Anna Marie Forschner. No date given but it is in Part VII, Marriages of some Pennsylvania soldiers and patriots of the Revolutionary period. Perhaps this is your guy. Carolyn
