Author: KentBenn Surnames: Rote Benn Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.centre/441.905/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Were you ever able to come across more info about James and Rhoda? I have seen the reference to Rhoda marrying a James Ben upon her release from the indians and their subsequent move to Centre Co. Have not come across any reference to the Ben being a Benn. However, my 3 great grandfather is supposedly James Benn from Centre Co. and lore says that he was married at least twice and I'm beginning to think maybe three times. James is noted in 1810 census with a family, and then is enumerated in 1820 next to a Jane Benn, who I think is possibly the "Widow Murphy". She is probably Barbara Jane Curtin and the mother of a Henry, Anna, Rebecca, Catherine, and Barbara Benn, all born between 1802 and 1812. Perhaps split by divorce prior to 1820, James has another family in 1820 and eventually may have had Josiah, Mary Ann, Martha, Margaret, another Rebecca, and maybe more. I have not been able to ascertain whether Rhoda and James had any children. All this is conjecture at this point, ! but a paper trail exists to prove the existence of the first set of children, and the second set of children. What are the chances of two James Benn's living in Potter Twp., Centre Co., PA at the same time? James is generally thought to be a son of Henry Benn, Sr. The first Rebecca mentioned above also married a George Rhoads which has been another way people spelled Rote back in the early 1800's. Your thoughts? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PACENTRE] Fwd: [CROATIA] Suggestions for posting a good query
    2. >From another list but thought this would help others when posting ____________________________________ From: croatia-admin@rootsweb.com To: croatia-l@rootsweb.com Sent: 4/24/2009 3:21:00 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time Subj: [CROATIA] Suggestions for posting a good query The more “pertinent” information given saves time for would be volunteers and helps you gain more and better information. If your message is content rich and detailed, it will lend itself more toward attracting appropriate responses. Posting messages with subject lines such as: Help !, Looking for missing Grandpa, etc.. often times are not even opened by many people! Stories about jumping ship, illegitimate births, being related to royalty are of no help and should be avoided. As Sgt. Joe Friday said, “just the facts ma’am” Some of the information that you should include in your query are: 1) Include the surname in the Subject line of your post. This allows List members to see the surname without opening the message. It is also seen by anyone browsing the archive list. 2) Anyplace the surname appears it should be typed in all CAPS, this will highlight it, making it quickly identified. 3) Give full name, given and surname. Include any alternate or AKA spellings that are known. 4) Include names of parents, spouse, children and any other relatives known. Often time search subjects names may be misspelled or mis-transcribed and by including other names often times those “hidden” subjects may be discovered/ 5) Give Date of Birth (DOB), Date Marriage, Date of Death (DOD). And if known include the place where each of these events occurred. 6) Indicate whether or not they emigrated. If they emigrated include approximate year of emigration and the place where they settled. Keep in mind that people from around the world may post to this List so be specific about countries, etc.. Example: Joe MAGARATS (alternate spelling MAGARAC). born 1882 in Croatia, exact place unknown, parents Mathew and Martha (unknown) married Mary SHUPAK 1908 at Pittsburgh PA. They had 3 children: John, Matt and Elvis. I have found them in census records 1910, 1920 and 1930 living at McKeesport, Allegheny County PA.. I have also found Joe in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) But little else is known. Joe also had a brother, John, who lived at Calumet Michigan. I haven't been able to find Joe’s nor Mary’s ship manifest. I would like to find their ship manifests, where they were born in Croatia as well as their marriage record in Pennsylvania. Also I would like to know how to find information about them in Croatia. Can anyone help me solve this mystery? Thank you in advance for you help. 1. [PACENTRE] BENN & RHOADS connections
    2. Paul A. Roth
    3. Below is an account sent to me from Kent BENN: Can anyone here shed any light on this dilemma?:   "It's a given that George RHOADES (however it's spelled) married Rebecca BENN. There's a reference to a George ROTE in 1781 being captured by the indians and subsequently being released. Captured along with him was an older sister named Rody or Rhoda.I am finding that this George ROTE can also be known as RHOADES.    You may have come across this before. Rhoda ends up in Centre County, Pennsylvania and marries a James BEN. After Rhoda dies, James suposedly marries a widow MURPHY. Is it a big stretch of the imagination to think that this James BEN or BENN may be Rebecca's father? I cannot locate any dates for the marriage or Rhoda's death. She was born about 1767 which fits with James BENN's birthdate. And Centre County seems to be the area that gives us the husbands of Rebecca's sisters Barbara and Catherine, namely John ALLISON and George LONBERGER.   As far as I know Barbara Jane CURTIN is Rebecca's mother, as well as the other 4 siblings. She can be found living with daughter Barbara and son in Gregg Twp., Centre Co., PA in the 1850 census enumerated as "Barbara". 10 years later she's still with Barbara and listed as "Jane". So I'm listing her as Barbara Jane CURTIN until...   The article about Rhoda ROTE marrying a James BEN in Centre Co. piques my interest. Our James BENN is in Centre Co. in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census listings. Whether he's there 20 to 30 years earlier is a question. I'm just wondering if perhaps Rhoda had married James prior to him marrying Barbara Jane CURTIN, and whether Barbara Jane was married previously to a Mr. Murphy. The abduction story of George and Rody ROTE mentions that when Rody dies, James BEN marries "the widow MURPHY." Could Barbara Jane have been "The Widow MURPHY"?   The CURTIN name is from a famous Curtin family of early Pennsylvania and a researcher at the Centre Co. library told me that it wasn't unheard of for unwed mothers to give their child the Curtin surname. I have not been able to trace a Barbara Jane CURTIN among the famous CURTIN family.   So I'm just free associating this whole idea that perhaps James BEN and our James BENN may be one and the same. Now if I can connect George RHOADS to George ROTE..." Kent. Now, there was a ROTE's Store in "Irish Hollow" in Pleasant Gap. My ancestor James Harry HUGHES  b. 1831, married Mary Jane RHOADS and they lived in a house behind the store. Mary Jane was a daughter of George & Rebecca BENN_RHOADS.   Thanks, Paul

    3. Before everyone gets too excited I have found nothing about a single PA ancestor in this book--and as Fred says it is hard to navigate. The library idea is good--I would suggest calling or emailing a library and asking for a lookup. It will take time for a librarian to check--the book is small but disorganized. 3. Dear Fred, I apologize, I had no idea asking about the book was going to be such a hassle. I'm very sorry to have stirred things up. Thank you again for checking the Conines for me. I've never seen the book, just seen it referenced multiple times and did not realize it is not indexed and such a pain to look things up in. Thank you also to everyone who had information about libraries that own the book. Also if anyone is interested, I remembered a genealogy book publishing company called Higginson that specializes in out of print books, they are at http://www.higginsonbooks.com/. I have ordered a copy - if those who would like a look up want to write to me, I will check them out when the book comes in. I think they may publish on demand so it may be a couple of weeks before the book gets here, but I will keep your request and check it when I can. Thank you again everyone for your help. I'm a "challenged researcher" right now with six kidlets age 3-13 so it is hard to travel to do research. Thank goodness for the internet and wonderful resources like this list and everyone here!
