I am so glad Theodore Pace is doing the DNA test. I have studied and researched Ida's quest for the parents of her ancestor McDaniel Pace. The more I look at all the facts and possibilities, the more questions than answers are found. I will share in future e-mails to follow various ideas from my research. My hope is that the DNA will answer at least one question. WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF MCDANIEL PACE b. July 12,1856 NC, d. Aug 30, 1918? Note the following info and the URL. More info from URL explaining a Bastardy Bond "A bastardy bond was the means by which the counties of North Carolina provided support for illegitimate children. When it was discovered that a woman was pregnant with an illegitimate child, she was examined and required to give the name of the reputed father. With that information, the father was then required to support the child and prevent he or she from becoming a charge of the County. Should the father not believe that the child was his, he could request a judgment of a jury in hopes that they would believe that he was not the father. If the mother refused to admit the name of the father, then she was required to post her own bond. Although they rarely give the name of the child, simple arithmetic will provide the birth date of the child to within a month or so. Illegitimate children always took the name of the mother unless they were declared legitimate and claimed by the father. These bonds are housed in the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh, NC in two volumes that cover 1850 to 1895. (NCSA C.R. #56.102.1 & .2)" Most important is that there are least 4 Zilphas, Zilpheys, Zilphia's in this area of Pace research that can keep us confused. Either Zilpha # 2 or # 3 could be the mother to the illegitimate child noted in the Bastardy bond. 1) Zilpha Hall, b abt 1800, md Alsy/Alsey Pace, b 1785, married Sept 21, 1820, Johnston Co., Alsey Pace is said to be a half brother to John Pace who has a daughter Zilpha. 2) ZILPHA PACE, most likely the daughter of John Pace & Edney Batten, was b. abt 1845(1839-1844?) married Henry Garner 3 AUG 1870 in Johnston County, NC. It appears Zilpha may have an illegitimate daughter Frances E. b. abt 1862 (born out of wedlock- who is her father? 1870 Census. 3) Zilpha Batten (b. abt 1832) md Bartly Pace (b. 1821-1826; d bef. 1860) 15 Jan 1850 Johnston Co. Bartly (Bartley) Pace is most likely the son of John & Edney Pace. 4) Zilphia Pace b. Feb. 1893, daughter of McDaniel and Harriet Wall Pace Has anyone ever looked at one of the Bastardy Bonds ?
