    3. THEORY # 2 McDaniel Pace' s parents Maybe the other son of John and Edney Pace, Larry Pace, b. abt 1826, is McDaniels father thru a relationship prior to his known recorded marriage. LARRY PACE married CYNTHIA BATTEN(b 1835) on 9 Apr 1856 - Johnston, NC Cynthia Batten parents are James H Batten, b abt 1804 and Sally Garner, b. abt 1801 Known CHILDREN of Larry & Cynthia Pace Nancy b. bet. 1859-1860, died bef. 1870 census? SARAH A., B. ABT 1862, Maybe Larry Pace is the father, but most likely his wife Cynthia is not the mother, noting they married April 9, 1856 and McDaniel Pace by the 1900 census was born July 12, 1856. If Cynthia is not the mother, this could explain why McDaniel Pace Grandparents have him in their household on 1860 and 1870 census. But it possible that McDaniels mother might have died, thus the living arrangements for McDaniel. Are their other possibilities or theories? Larry Pace

    2. Arguing just on the basis of probabilities, it seems to me that since John Pace named McDaniel as his grandson and gave him land, he probably really was the child of one of John Pace's children. Would he claim as his grandson a child born out of wedlock to his son's wife? Anything's possible I suppose, but given that (a) the bond says his mother was Zilpha Pace and (b) the bond also shows he was born out of wedlock and (c) John Pace called him grandson and (c) John Pace's daughter Zilpha Pace seems to have had an illegitimate daughter ...putting all those things together and it seems to me to make sense that Zilpha Pace (later Garner) was his mother. If she had a relationship (or was taken advantage of) and it lasted for a few years, and two children resulted, she wouldn't be the first young girl that that happened to. Is there one of these bonds for the girl "Frances E." or "Bettie", I wonder? Ellen

    3. Does anyone have a copy of this particular Bastardy Bond? I am only quoting an index reference which does not provide the name or sex of the child. From the Index we can not determine anything about the child born. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncjohnst/bastardy.htm JOHNSTON COUNTY BASTARDY BONDS Pg. 34; Date: 25 May 1857; Mother-Zilpha Pace; Father-Daniel Sellers Regarding "Frances E." or "Bettie", her mother Zilpha Pace is not on the index list. There is only 1 Bastardy bond indexed in 1862.
