Pace was a veteran of the Civil War serving with the Company I, 65th Infantry Regiment Illinois. He married Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (b. Oct 02, 1840 in Ohio; d. Jul 16, 1924 in Iowa) on Jan 28, 1866 in Warren County, Illinois. William farmed in White Cloud Township, Mills County, Iowa from 1866 through about 1890.
