In a recent E-mail, I cited a reference that listed a number of Paces who were veterans of the Revolutionary War. Presumably, these soldiers were members of units belonging to the Continental Army. [That E-mail is repeated in the text below.] It is of interest to compare this list of Patriots with a list of Patriots cited by the Daughters of the American Revolution. To this end I consulted a 1994 publication by the DAR, The DAR Patriot Index. Obviously, this reference is a little dated. The criteria for admission to the DAR are more broadly based than a simple requirement the ancestor must have fought in the war. Some Patriots are recognized for their contributions in the political and economic arenas. Others fought, but were probably members of the various Colonial militias. Thus, Drury Pace (1741- 1801) is listed by the DAR as a Captain in a Georgia unit. He is not shown in the list of Revolutionary soldiers in the Index composed by Virgil White, shown below. So we have two lists. The DAR source is given by: DAR PATRIOT INDEX, CENTENNIAL EDITION, Vol.3, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Centennial Administrations, Washington, 1994, p. 2205. Call #PR 973.36 M2dau pt. 3 The following Paces are listed as Patriots by the DAR. This means that their descendants have researched the Patriots ancestry, and have determined that said individual was active on the patriot side in the Revolutionary War. The following abbreviations are employed in the list: WPNS Widow Pensioned Sol Soldier (no details) PS Patriotic Service PNSR Soldier Pensioned PACE: Barnabas: b. c. 1747 GA d. 8-13-1831 GA m(1) Agnes Aycock (2) Mary Casey Sol GA Drury: b. 10-6-1745 GA d. 2-5-1801 GA m. Co., 1995, p. 2046. I have reproduced the entries under the Pace surname as follows. PACE, Henry, srv (served) as Pvt in Willets NY Regt. Jesse or as Jesse Pase, srv as Pvt. in 10th VA Regt. Joel, srv. as Pvt. in VA Troops, card # 2522, roll #39. Joseph, srv. as Pvt. in 9th VA Regt. Williamson, srv. as Pvt. in the Commander-in-Chiefs Guard for Cont. Troops Williamson or as Williamson Peace, srv. as Pvt. In 14th VA Regt. The card numbers and roll numbers refer to the source that the author used. The last four entries must refer to the same William X or H. Pace. Evidently, there was some confusion regarding his name in the records. A third person may have erred when entering records regarding said William. You will also notice that there is a Pace in A New Hampshire regiment, as well as a Michael Pase in a New Jersey regiment. A William Pace is common to both books. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze.
