A few days ago I received email from a young man with the unusual name of Europe Ahmad Farmer. His ggg grandmother was Eliza (Louisa) Pace, married in 1843 to Dempsey Taylor in Nash County, North Carolina. Eliza was listed variously in the records as FPC (Free Person of Color) and mulatto. He includes a fascinating tale of a triracial group of families of the upper south. His story illustrates one of the anomalies of American history-our strange way of classifying races and how it evolved. The same people can be listed at different times as white or FTP. Some of these folks were so light skinned that you couldn't really tell. You can see his story at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pace/pacepix/Pace-Taylor/ There sill be more to come but I wanted to get this online. Both Rebecca and I have invided Europe Ahmad to join the Pace list and/or the Pace society. He says he "isn't much for online discussions" and from his cryptic emails I can tell that he is a man of few words. But it would be nice if he would join the Pace society. ; I also think it might be nice to get this story into a form that could be published in the Bulletin. Roy Johnson
