In the interest of remaining as accurate as possible about the Will of William Pace, Sr. died 1845 Montgomery County TN, we need to keep in mind the following: There is no original Will for William Pace Sr., what we have is a copy that was recorded by a clerk into the court record. No original survives, nor does any probate packet which would contain any original papers about the business of the estate. All we have is what was copied into the court record. We have no way of knowing whether any errors or omissions were made by the clerk when he copied the Will into the record book. It has been my opinion that the daughter Mary McGraw listed in the Will was another granddaughter, rather than a daughter, and that we do not know the name of the daughter that married the McGraw. This opinion was somewhat re-enforced by the following that I located in Oklahoma City last summer while attending the Pace Society Reunion. The following McGraws are given in Robertson County TN Apprentice records, below is the published record, I have not yet seen the original: In Robertson County TN, 11 May 1829 Hardy Felts apprenticed orphan Mary McGraw. This was canceled 11 Feb 1933. The same date 11 Feb 1833 Mary McGraw orphan, age about 12 years was apprenticed to Evin Morris to learn housewifery. Also in Robertson County Archer McGraw, orphan, was apprenticed to Granville Nicholson 8 May 1826 to learn farming, this was Canceled 9 Feb 1829: The same date 9 Feb 1829 Archibald McGraw age about 17 years was apprenticed to Even Morris. [The Felts and Nicholsons are Pace associated families in that area of TN.] The other McGraw orphan listed in Robertson County TN was Uriah McGraw apprenticed to George G. Brown 13 Feb 1815 age 8 years on 4 May next. More likely he was between 70 and 80. However, Bruce Howard, in his book Our Colonial Ancestors ,states that "William was born about the year 1745 in Edgecombe Co. (now Halifax Co.) NC." This estimate is consistent with the census record. A Pace Society Bulletin, Vol. I gives his birth date as 1746-48. His wife is not mentioned in either the 1830 census or his will. She may not be in the 1820 census. Thus, she may have died before 1820. William Pace, Sr. bought his land in TN in 1803, but probably arrived earlier. According to Howard p. 329, William sold 101 acres "on the North of the Tar River on the Great Branch" in Franklin Co., NC on 9/16/1794 to David Jarnegan. He sold 444 acres (adjacent location) to Henry G. Williams on 9/6/1802, Howard pp 119-120. In TN in 1809, William purchased from Joseph Choate 100 acres of land. (What am I missing?) The new participant #134499, through William and Sicely's son Gideon only tested 12 markers and they are a perfect match not only to the previous participant through William and Sicely's son William Richard (#10683), but also to the modal (most common) result for all of Group 3b. In this case 12 markers really isn't enough to tell us anything new about this branch of the family. The other participant from this line (#16218) through William and Sicely's son Alsey does have a DNA difference at DYS 390 (marker 2), but this appears to have been a more "recent" change - somewhere between Alsey Pace and the participant. We do now have 12 marker DNA results for three lines of descent from William Pace and Sicely Walker - through Alsey, William Richard, and Gideon. Between the three sets of results, the results show that the father William Pace's 25 marker DNA results are a perfect match to the Group 3b modal - with the 1st 12 matching DNA marker results of the William Richard and Gideon lines and markers 13-25 matching for the Alsey and William Richard lines. These three results place this line solidly in Group 3b with the modal for these three results a perfect match overall at 25 markers to the Group 3b modal.
