    3. As Rebecca mentioned, I was able to determine my mtDNA profile from the sample that I submitted to SMGF several years ago. I descend in the direct female line from a ggg-grandmother who is thought by some to be half-Indian. My mtDNA profile is the most common Western European haplotype, which I feel disproves the half-Indian theory. (This assumes that the Indian was my gggg-grandmother rather than my gggg-grandfather, which I think is probable considering the colonists' attitudes toward intermarriage with Indians during that period). One small addition to the discussion: Both sons and daughters inherit the mtDNA of the mother, but only the daughter passes it on to children. mtDNA exists in the mitochondria which is located in the cytoplasm. All the cytoplasm in the egg comes from the mother. At fertilization, the male contributes only the small packet of chromosomes for the nucleus of the zygote and contributes nothing at all to the cytoplasm. Hence, we males have maternal mtDNA that can be tested, even though we pass none of it on to our offspring.
