    1. Hungars Parish Pace
    2. This record has been bouncing around the Pace Society since the early years. Some tried to prove John of Hungars Parish was John of Middlesex because the birth date was right, but now we know that this is unlikely. From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Volume 22, No. 1 (July 1913), pages 39-43, is an article written by Thomas B. Robertson that is titled "Hungars Parish Records." Writing from Eastville, Virginia, on 6 Feb 1913, Mr. Robertson says on page 39, "In Vol. XVIII, page 178 and seq. of the William and Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine, there was given the deaths and marriages for the year beginning March 25, 1660, and ending March 25, 1661. I now give below the report made to the monthly court for the year following, that is, from March 25, 1661 to March 25, 1662. This interesting item from the old records of this county is found in the Book of Deeds, Wills, &c., for the years 1657 to 1666. John Lawrance seems to have been the only parish clerk who took the trouble to file his returns in the clerk's office. Or it is possible that in moving the office around from house to house in those days the reports were destroyed along with many other original papers." Then Mr. Robertson begins to quote from the records themselves: "A true account of such persons as have bin borne, Baptized, Married and buried in Hungars Parish from ye 25th of March 1661 to ye 25th of March Anno 1662." CHILDREN Richard Johnson ye sonne of Tho and Ann Johnson - Apr 1st Bridgett Robinson ye daughter of Jno. and Mary Robinson - Apr 2d John Pace ye sonne of Jno and Mary Pace - Apr 2d James Bruce ye sonne of James and Mary Bruce - Apr 2d Thomas Martiall ye sonne of Tho and Mary Martiall - Apr 2d Mary Obin ye daughter of Robert and Ann Obin - Apr 2d Bridgett Henderson ye daughter of Gilbert and Mary Henderson - Apr 2d Ann Mapp daughter of Jno and Mary Mapp - May 5th --- The lists continue on pages 40-43 with more births, baptisms, burials, and marriages. There are no other Pace records given in this list. The quote I have seen from Marion Mehrkens, states "In the Hungars Parish Register is a listing of the birth of John Pace, 'ye sonne of John and Mary Pace' on April 2, 1661. In the same year a John Pace is shown as having died. Whether this was the infant, or his father, is not clear." Ms. Mehrkens was not referring to the Lawrence records quoted by Robertson for no Pace burial is indicated by Robertson, and the dates are different. I wonder where she obtained this information. From what I have seen of her other submissions, she often proceeded on poorly documented or non-documented assumptions. Hungars Parish was in Northampton County VA. Northampton County today is located on the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula that separates the Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. This is further indication that there were other Paces in early VA and may account for some ot our non-matching Pace records. Roy Johnson.

    1. Re: [PACE-L] Richard Pace-York Co. VA, Jury List 1672/73
    2. I've been doing some thinking and trying to apply some logic to the connection between Jamestown Paces and those of NC. Landowners in early Virginia usually left more abundant records tue to their land transactions and court appearances. It was the servant class that slipped in under the radar. So it seems to me the only landowning Paces--at least large landowners--were the Richard line, or at least we haven't found evidence of any others. George Pace was one of the largest landowners in the area. Bruce Howard visited the area and measured out the metes and bounds of George's land and walked over it; see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pace/jtown.htm and click the link to the story of Bruce's visit. Therefore I would assums along with Bruce that the Richard Paces were the same. Likewise, Becky Mosely has presented a timeline showing a Richard Pace selling off land in VA and buying land in NC. I haven't sorted all of this out yet, but it is to me strong circumstantial evidence that Richard of NC was descended from Richard-George-Richard of Jamestown, although we do not have the birth records to prove it. A person who came as a servant was not likely to be buying land, and if so, only a small holding. Looks like Becky's timeline indicated a probable connection. One can always seek more records, but sometimes they are just not available and you have to go with what you have. I think that's fine as long as you clearly cite what records you are basing things on. 1. Richard Pace-York Co. VA, Jury List 1672/73
    2. Joyce
    3. According to Bruce Howard's "Our Colonial Ancestors," p. 75, there was a jury list in York Co. in March 1672/73 which contained the name of Richard Pace. Mr. Howard cites "Inquisitions on Escheated Lands. York Co. Va., p. 202. 4th April 1673." He weaves this into the narrative of the comings and goings across counties of Richard Pace m. Mary, and holds it as proof that this Richard Pace was a landowner in York Co. since only freeholders were allowed to serve on juries. Bruce Howard seems to think that this was the same Richard Pace as in Charles City Co./Surry Co. (final boundary not decided til Sept. 1689). Though Mr. Howard's opinions do not a fact make, a juryman had to be at least 21 (correct?) so if not Richard m. Mary, then what Richard, again is the reasonable question. - Joyce -----Original Message----- From: Rebecca Christensen [mailto:rchristen@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2006 7:56 AM To: PACE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PACE-L] William Corker headright grant While this is being discussed, it should be remembered that this transcription does not imply that Richard Pace was transported into the colony in 1660 nor does it mean that Richard Pace lived in in York County nor does it give us any indication of Richard Pace's age, nor does it indicate that this Richard Pace was even living in 1660. It also doesn't mean that all 25 people came into the colony at the same time. The below is stating that in 1660 William Corker received land that happens to be located in York County (the location of the land - not necessarily Richard Pace's location). William Corker was submitting his paperwork for the transportation of a Richard Pace into the colony at some time before 1660. This Richard Pace could have come 20 years earlier, for example. We have no way of knowing when he came to the colony other than it was sometime before 1660. 3. Indeed. So far, he is just a salutary demonstration that there could have been more than one Richard Pace in Virginia at the time. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I will be able to piece together some more information about this Richard Pace. In 1670, the tithable list of William Browne includes a servant Richard Pace. (Surry County Virginia Deed Book p. 345). Could this be the headright Richard Pace? On 7 Sept 1675, from Surry County Virginia Court Book 3: "Attachment agt. estate Rich. Pace granted Coll. Thomas Swann for 400 lbs tobacco." Who is this, I wonder? He seems to be dead. Richard Pace son of George is apparently still alive in 1675. 1. RE-DUH-Marriage in Brides County-IN VA
    2. Hello AT and other cousins, Let me put in my 2 cents. A lot of times marriages took place at the county of the bride. Wanda YEP, <DUH>, it IS the law in Va. that the Marriage License be issued in the County where the Bride Lives. DUH, Again: I personally had this experience in 1952 when I Married My First Wife the Second time, <WELL I Doubt if any one would be able to understand that <ONE> Course I ALSO, wonder Just how Many of those that Cannot understand that, Have ever had a 6 1/2 Year old son look them in the face & tell their Mother That I do not know this Man. But I am sure this law is POST Circuit Rider Days. So it is very possible for some Marriage's to have been recorded in the Next County. SO it would not to check some of the Counties Adjoining the County where Aunt Jane or Grt Grand MA. was raised, JUST THINK abt this: Appomattox County, Va was formed from Campbell, Charolette, Buckingham & Prince Edward Counties. Records were Destroyed by Fire in 1895, Buckingham County Records were Destroyed By fire in 1869. NOW HERE IS A COUNTY That could affect MANY of us, Because, PLEASE follow Along: New Kent County, formed 1654 from York County <Original Shire> Records Burned 1865 During Civil WAR, ON TO Hanover 1721 formed from New Kent County. Records Destroyed in 1865. ON TO- Louisa County 1742 Formed from Hanover County, ON TO Albemarle County 1744 <PART OF IT> Formed from Louisa County, onto Amherst County 1761 formed from Albemarle County onto Nelson County Va. 1808 formed from Amherst County, So COUSINS JUST maybe the Circuit Rider did make it to an adjoining County, & leave The Marriage INFO that we haven't found. NOW this may look like going all around the Mountain to get to the Source, BUT, we will take a bit more of the area, Henrico 1634 Original SHIRE, <County on to Goochland County 1728 Formed from Henrico County. All records were Destroyed by Fire June 1820, Other Records were Destroyed in 1865 During the Civil WAR, 1744 Albemarle County Formed With part OF Goochland County ON To Buckingham County 1761 formed from Albemarle County All Records destroyed in 1869. AND, Fluvana 1777 formed from Albemarle County. NOW; This may Seem far fetched in relation to our Genealogy BUT this is the route that many of <MY Ancestors> Travailed on their Journey to the Creation OF <CUZ A T> The Paces& Johnson's Moved from Middlesex Co. to Hanover & followed the Same Rout that Brought the Campbell's, Powell's, AND so many more of OUR wonderful Ancestors to the Beautiful BLUE RIDGE Mountains, Then onward Scattering Through the Land & Over SEAS < CUZ LILLY> NOW this Geography Lesson is from; RETRACING OUR FAMILY LEGACY. EVOLUTION of VIRGINIA COUNTIES <THE FORMATION OF VIRGINIA COUNTIES> SURELY SOMETHING TO PONDER- THEN TAKE A GOOD LOOK- Because this is THE path of many of our Ancestors. JUST Think: First U. S. Census 1790 Enumerated By the U. S. Marshall's They recorded only 4 Million People. Then; Birth Certificates, in Va in 1920_______?? OH YES. Then: The First SOC-#,S in 1935 UH-HUH, Now does any one care to ignore Looking for WHERE THE Circuit Rider <MAY> have Registered that Marriage, that He performed in New Kent Or Hanover_____?? CUZ A T <atpowelljr@aol.com>

He was very prominent in early times including being a member of the Colony's Council. Major WILLIAM Browne is his SON-IN-LAW who marries HENRY'S daughter MARY and dies in 1704/5. He too was very active in county politics (justice, militia, sheriff, etc.). I have yet to find any information about Henry and William's CONNECTION besides being IN-LAWS. BERKELEY BROWNE is HENRY'S son who dies young and leaves no heirs. THE BROWNE line descends from WILLIAM and MARY BROWNE. (The Randolph & Browne lines meet about the time of the American Revolution.) The lands JOHN ROLFE patented are about 3 to 4 miles away from Four Mile Tree - now known as Smith's Fort. [This is located directly across the river from Jamestowne, up Gray's Creek.]

    3. How very interesting. Convoluted relationships. Let's see, John Barker was Thomas Drew's stepson and Richard Taylor's brother-in-law. John Barker married Hannah Pitt, who was not born Hannah Pitt but had been married before and had a daughter of the marriage, also named Hannah Pitt. I wonder who Hannah Pitt was before she married. 1. Re: [PACE-L] "...in behalf of the orphan..."

    3. I think it is as James says -- the record mentioning "the orphan" seems to be the end of the paper trail from Richard and Isabella. We know there was at least one child of the marriage between Richard (George, Richard) and Mary but we don't know what became of that child. We don't know if it was a boy or a girl or whether it grew up to claim the estate which was still being haggled over in 1692. If it was a girl the chances of finding a trail are slim. If it was a boy there is difficulty in identifying it amongst the multiplying Paces in Virginia. Ruth Clark comments "the singular orphan may be significant". In the timeline, if I have not overlooked any entries, the next time a Richard Pace appears in court is in Surry County 15 Aug 1711: "Richd Pace not appearing to prosecute his suit agst. Jno. Edmunds. Case dismissed." Who is this Richard Pace? The orphan? Some other descendant of Richard and Isabella? Or an unrelated Richard Pace? There is this comment on the timeline: "Found no documentation as to the parents of the Richard PACEs in Surry County. We know which went to NC but cannot prove parentage." --------------------------------- All New Yahoo! Mail – Tired of Vi@gr@! come-ons? Let our SpamGuard protect you.

    3. I haven't seen the original. I've seen it cited in two places. First in the "Pace Event/Source Timeline 1610-1750 in Virginia" compiled by Ruth Keys Clark who so kindly sent me a copy of it. And second in a message posted to this list in 2003 (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PACE/2003-10/1067472856) by Roy Johnson.
