    3. > The Pace society had a "whites > only' restriction in > the by-laws up to 2001. Wow...I had know idea that was the case. I guess it shouldn't be overly surprising given that genealogy is primarily an 'older generation' hobby, and older generations grew up in a time when that mentality was tolerated (especially in the south, and of course most of the PACE lines have southern heritage...and I'm guessing the Society may have been founded in the south given that fact), but its still kind of shocking when you see/read something like that...especially today. In 2001? Whew. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

    3. Many slaves took the last name of their owners regardless of how they were treated as it was a way to stay connected to their families and only life that they had known. I'm sure many descendants of slave owning families would like to assume that African Americans that kept the surname of their families did so because their ancestors were 'good' slave owners, but often it had nothing to do with how they were treated as slaves. In researching my own wife's family we found slavery horror stories, yet there her ancestors were, post Civil War, carrying the surnames of their owners. 3. Jackie: Missed Ray Ruck post and have following questions. What was the Wm. Pace Elizabeth Pace puzzle? I have Wm. Pace (John-JosephSr.-John Sr.)marrying Elizabeth *Newsome* Wade daughter of Richard Wade and unidentified ca. 1768. You show her being born 24, Nov. 1764. My data ca. 1768. and that she died before 1773. I wondered if the Newsome was Unidentified family maiden name or possibility a previous marriage to a Newsome. You make my unidentified *Besty Baker Wade, *Elizabeths mother, Correct?. Besty named as her mother a Elizabeth, making Richard Wades daughter a Elizabeth and his mother in law a Elizabeth, Correct?. 2. Betty A Pace
    3. Roy, I did go to this web site and found it very interesting. My Alsey Pace (b.1785)was one half white (Stephen Pace) and one half Native American--name and tribe of his mother unknown, though I think maybe Tuscorora. This could be Edgecombe Co. NC or another Piedmont county. Alsey Pace had two white wives in Johnston Co. NC--my Zilpha Hall in 1820 and Cassandra Dean in 1836. I think it is the same Alsey Pace both times. I don't think there has been a DNA test on the children of Cassandra & Alsey, but my brother David's DNA puts us in the John and Sarah Burge group. I don't know if Native American genes would be reflected in the DNA results. If Alsey Pace did in fact marry Cassandra Dean in Johnston Co. NC and desert Zilpha and the children (who were in Guilford Co. NC until 1858), then these are the half-brothers and half-sisters of our Pace children by Zilpha. Zilpha and her children were always shown as white, but Alsey and Cassandra in Johnston Co. NC were always shown as mulatto--census choices would have been white, black, or mulatto at that time. I have not followed all the marriages of the children of Alsey and Cassandra, but here are their names. Madison may be James Madison Pace and Rhinison is also Raven Snow (Indian name) or R.S. Here is the way I show the children of Alsey and Cassandra Pace *2nd Wife of Alsa/Alsey Pace: +Cassandra Dean b.1810-15 m: . 6 March 1836 in Johnston Co., NC 2. Noah - b.1834-37Johnston Co. NC 2. Sally - b. 1850JohnstonCo. NC 2. Alsey - male - b.?Johnston Co.NC (he is older than some of these others, but may be a grandson. - birthdate unclear on census reports. The Johnston county portion of NC is that little tip that is near Nash county, Wake county, Franklin, and Halifax, so it could relate to the article on the web page you referenced. I am sending you separately an Excel file made up by one of my Julian family's researchers showing the various splits in the NC counties over the years, as boundaries changed. 3. I would be happy to set up a special St. Dunstan's page on PacePix, or Gordon could do it on the Pace site if he wants. Either way there could be a link on the Pace site. There is already some information and a couple of picture, plus some maps, of St. Dunstan's on my article about my visit there in 1994. The page also includes comments and insights from others who were there. The URL is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pace/seeking.htm The Prospect of Whitby pub was also there during Richard's time and not too far from Wapping Wall, the street where Richard and Isabella both lived prior to their marriage. 3. Royce,    For submission to the Pace Society Bulletin, you can send pictures and anything you write up about your trip to Melea Allan, Bulletin editor.  Her e-mail is meleaa @ yahoo.com (remove the spaces around the @).    The online, downloadable version of the Bulletin allows color pictures while the mailed version is black and white.    Roy Johnson has a Pace Pix website for pictures as well.  There may also be a page on the PaceSociety public website that the pictures of St. Dunstans can be added to, if not, maybe a page can be created about St. Dunstans.   I'm sure many would like to see your pictures and hear more about St. Dunstans. What follows is my limited information for those interested: Doris Carlton 'Doc' Pace died peacefully at his home in Bakerville, TN, on Oct 14th, 2008. Born Feb 28th, 1922, to Alzo Bryan Pace, Sr. and Eunice Gertrude Etheridge, 'Doc' served a successful career in the Navy from 1940 to 1961 and a second career with the Federal Social Security and Medicare Administrations before a final retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam 'Midge' (Cavender) Pace and is survived by their daughter Miriam Elizabeth (Pace) High and two grandsons. Services have not been scheduled at this time, but I'm fairly certain visitation will be in Waverly, TN, with interment in Bakerville, TN. Jon

    3. Thank you, JD. The thing that confused me was Family Bible Records, Wayne County, Tennessee - By Wayne Co. Historical Society: that said: "Richard PACE, son of George and Rebecca (WOODLIEF) PACE.named in his will the following children, and his wife, Rebecca." And proceeded to list the children of Richard Pace and Rebecca Poythress. So naturally I had to look at my records again, and I did not have that Richard was the son of GEORGE? And that was not what Adventurers of Purse and Person said. ?? Your question: John PACE b: abt. 1774 SC married Sarah __ (or is this Sarah Jane you refer to.) - I just know his wife's name was Sarah, and they had many children (that I would love to know more about). 3. 1. Richard m. Isabella Smythe b. George m. Sarah Maycock i. Richard m. Mary 1) Richard (died in Bertie, NC) m. Rebecca I suspect all of their children's lines would be accepted into the Jamestown Society, but I have seen applications on these two lines: A. Richard m. Elizabeth Cain - accepted into Jamestown Society. B. Rebecca m. 1) Bradford 2) Aycock - accepted into Jamestown Society. This is the one I have a 2007 acceptance. 2) John (died in Bertie, NC) m. Elizabeth (probably Elizabeth Lowe) - accepted into Jamestown Society. I'm not sure how the John Pace m. Ann Russell line submitted their applications to the Jamestown Society. I haven't had a chance to pull out those boxes today. I'm not sure if any of the John m. Sarah (he was born in Prince George, VA moved to Edgecombe, NC, then to Surry, NC where he died) have been accepted. One thing I am unclear on is that the Aycock letter states that Rebecca Pace had two children with John Bradford - John and Tabitha. But John Bradford's Will, which is in the database, doesn't list a daughter Tabitha. It appears from the Will that his youngest daughter was named Sarah. Has anyone done further research on this? Also, who is the mother of all the other children of John Bradford? 3. Virginia, I am interested in the Davis connection. Do you have any information on John Davis' parents? I show that Thomas W Pace was a brother to your Sarah Jane. I have him married to Drucilla Davis dau of Joshua Davis. I suspect that your John and my Drucilla may have been brother and sister. Thomas by the way lived to be over 100, went west, returned to SC, then finally went to Texas where he died.
