Dutterer as 48 years of age, with Caroline, age 43 (who is actually Caroline Knappenberger), and three sons: William, age 13 who is Philip's son from his first marriage, James, age 4 who is Caroline's son from her first marriage (James Henry Knappenberger) and Edwin, who is one year of age. We do not know if Edwin is a son of Philip's from his first marriage or a son of Caroline and Phillip. In a November 1869 baptism record for Nathan Edwin Dotter, a son of William and Sally Ann Dotter, the sponsors are listed as Philip Dotter and Carolina Knappenberger. So it seems for sure that she was a housekeeper for Philip and not his legal wife. The 1870 census for Polk Twp., Monroe County, PA lists Philip C. Dutter as 56 years of age, a carpenter with Edwin Dutter, age 10. Also in the houshold is Caroline Burger, age 53 listed as housekeeper and her son, James Burger, age 15, who is actually James Henry Knappenberger. All were born in PA. In the 1880 census for Tunkhannock, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Caroline Knappenberger is listed as 64 years of age, listed as mother,, born in PA living in her son's home (James Henry). We are unsure if Caroline married Philip C. Dutter or was just his housekeeper. It seems likely that she was his housekeeper only.
