The first Catholic Church in the area was Immaculate Conception and served the Irish community. St. Joseph's on the East side was later. Both churches are still in existence, but they are part of Allentown Diocese now, not the Philadelphia Archdiocese. There was also a St. Joseph's in Summit Hill which would have been designated Mauch Chunk Twp. in early census records. I know that the Summit Hill church and IC both allow look ups. At least they did in the past. Another possibility, other than St. Jerome's (which I think was founded in 1833) is Immaculate Conception in Allentown. I read somewhere that parishioners from that parish founded the IC in Mauch Chunk. Good luck! Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
