York County Gilbert, Jesse, come of ancester who settled in Lancaster county at an early day and were descened from John Gilbert, who lived in the west of Cornwall, England, where he became a Quaker, he was banished in 1663 on account of his faith. For some time he was imprisoned in the Lancaster jail, and then with other of that faith emigrated to America.. Soon after the grant to PA to Wm. Penn the party of which John Gilbert was a member settled near what i Perkasie, Bucks. County. John had brought his wife, Florence, and his two sons, John and Joseph, the latter being 7 or 8, after landing in America, another son, Joshua was born. It is believed that John Gilbert did not leave the Soc. of Friends. In 1605 he purchased 600 acres of land from Nicholas Redrone, Mr. Redrone having bought it from the original owner and surveyor, Thomas Holems. Part of the land, John sold to John Carver, dididing the remainder between his sons, John and Joseph Joseph Gilbert married Rachel Loegy of Abington, Lower Dublin, and settled on the tract, he died Aug 8, 1765, aged 90 years. Aftr bearing him several children his wife died, and he married 2nd to Sarah James. Benjamin, the youngest son of Joseph was born 1711, and in June 1731, he married Sarah, d/o Benjamin Mason. They had 8 children; His 1st wife died in 1759, he married 2nd to Elizabeth Peart, widow Benjamin Peart and the d/o Benjamin Walters. Jesse Gilbert, son of Benjamin,and grandfather of the Jese of today, married Sarah Harding, and settled in Bird-in-Hand, Lancaster Co. Children; Amos, born among the Indian, married Sarah Kirk, Betsey, died in infancy, Benjamin died in Colerain, married Hannah Rakestraw, Sarah became the wife of Henry Bushong, John, Joshua, the father of Jesse, and Caroline died at 64 in Chester Co. Joshus Gilbert, was born 1801 at Bird-in-Hand, he emained there in 1864, when he moved to Chester County, where he died in 1876, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Hagie. In 1824 he married Elizabeth Valentine, d/o John and Mary (Taylor) Valantine. The mother of Mrs. Gilbert died in 1858. She and her husband were Quakers. Children; Lydia, Thomas, and Anne, all died in infancy, Mary, wife of John Owen, of Manayunk, PA., Jesse, and Sarah, married Benjamin Hagie. Jesse Gilbert ( a Quaker), was born in Bart township, Aug 22, 1834, married June 3, 1867 to Anna Hunter, (a Presbyterian) who was born in Bart township Mrs. Gilbert's parents were Alexander and Mary (Park) Huner, the former of whom was a native of Ireland and came to America when a boy. Mrs. Hunter was reared in Chester Co (born there). Mrs. Gilbert had 4 brothers who served in the Civil war. George, Joseph, John A., and James McCammon Hunter. Lancaster Co Gilbert, Amos, mayor of Quarryville, was born July 7, 1858 in Eden township. His parents J. Harding and Hannah H. (Whitson) Gilbert, of Lancaster Co, where both were born. Mr. Gilbert in 1824 and Mrs.Gilbert in 1828 The father reared in Lancaster Co. In 1858 he purchased a farm, which he conducted in connection with his tannery business. He died 1893. Of a family of 7 childre, 5 are still living, May, wthe wife Albion Walter, Edwad M., Hugh W., Joseph H., of Oxford, Chester Co, George and JOhn died young Amos Gilbert, in 1886 married Hannah Dickinson, d/o James and Ruth Dickinson.After their marriage they moved to Quarryville. Mrs. Gilbert died in 1893, children; E. Dickinson, John Roland and James D. In 1897 Mr. Gilbert marred 2nd to Olive Graybill, of Duncannon. Gilbert, Edwin M., of Lancaster Co., is a descendant of John and Flornce Gilbert, from Conrwall, England. The early Gilberts were farmer by occupation and Quaker in religion. The family came to Lancaster in the early part of the 19th century. When the Gilbert family moved from Bucks Co, to which they gave their family name, and after living there for 6mos they were captured in 1781 by Indians and taken to Canada, where he were kept a number of years. Joseph H. Gilbert, father of Edwin M., died in Eden township, 1893. He married Hannah H. Whitson, his wife was the daughter of Micah Whitson, a noted Quaker. Children; Mary W., wife of A. Walton of Bart township, Amos, of Quarreyvile, Edwim M., Hugh W., of Quarryville, and Joseph H., of Chester Co. On Jan 2, 1887 Mr. Gilbert, was married to Carrie V.
