Martz or Mertz family of Berks Co, where in Longswamp township, the first ancestor to come from Germany made a settlement. The name is perpetuated there by the town Mertztown, in Longswamp township, and the Mertz's Church, same section. Johannes Martz or Maerts, the founder of the family in America, was one of 242 passengers on the ship "Ann". He was a son of Johannes Maertz of Stockhausen, Wurtemberg, about 35 miles northwest of Frankfort-on-the-Main, and 40 miles northeast of Coblentz, in Germany. Johannes Maertz, the emigrant, land at Phila. Sept 28, 1749. He settled in the vicinity of Lyona, Berks Co. The births of his first 4 children are recorded at the Mertz Church. On May 24, 1756 he married Rosina "Hase", d/o Melchior Hase. Children; Johannes, born July 17, 1757, Anna Maria, born Dec 2, 1760, Maria Salome, May24 1763. Melchior, April 11, 1757, and Peter, March 9, 1769. The line we are interested at present descends from either Johannes or Melchior. David and Jacob Martz, brothers, moved from Berks or Lancaster county toward the close of the 18 century, setteling on the Shamokin creek, 3 miles south of Sunbury, Northumberlan Co. Jacob, however did not remain long, moving to Lykens valley in Dauphin Co., where he died and was buried. David Martz, a blacksmith, married Barbara Miller, they had a family of 7 children, 5 sons and 2 daughters; David, Henry,Peter, Abraham, and George, all of whom but Henry moved to Dayton, Ohio, where they died. Susan married John "Richstine", and Elizabeth married Abraham Arter. The son Peter, of this family was commissioned associate judge of Northumberland Co, April 12, 1883 Henry Martz, son of David, was born in Shomokin township, he married Elizabeth Fagely, d/o Christian and Magdalena Fagely and are buried in St. Peter's grave-yard. They had 6 children; Hettie, Katie, Mary Ann, George, Nathan F. Nathan F., was born July 20, 1820 in Shamokin township, and when 18 years of age he went to Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, where he became a clerk in the store of his uncles, Nathan and George Fagely. After 8 years in their employ he formed a patnership with Robert Klotz under the firm name Martz and Klotz, and they carried on the general store for some time, until Mr. Klotz's enlistment in the Mexican War. In 1851 Mr. Martz came to Sunbury where he has since made his home. Here he was first associated with his uncles, William and Reuben Fagely. In 1842, Mr. Martz became a member of the "Old 76 Lodge at Mauch Chunk, of the I.O.O.F., and is now (1911) one of the oldest living Odd Fellow. On Sept 19, 1848, he married ofAllentown, Eliza Samuels, who was born Sept 13, 1827, d/o Jesse and Mary (Engleman) Samuels. Mr. and Mrs. Martz celebrated their 60th anniversary Sept 19, 1908. They had children; William E., of Shamokin, Jesse S., died 1856, Edward, died Feb 2, 1857, Ida V.B., wife of W.C.McConnell, and Mary, wife of Henry B. Smith. Henry B. Smith, was born Nov 19, 1855, in Womelsdorf, Berks Co, s/o Joseph and Elizabeth (Haak) Smith, he being the 2nd of their 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The father died in 1876 age 56. On Oct 24, 1888, Henry B., married in Sunbury to Mary E. Martz, d/o Nathan F. Martz, and they had 1 daughter, Elizabeth Martz Smith. Members of the Lutheran Church Fagely family is of German origin and was founded in PA by Jacob and Maria Eva Fagely, who came to this county in 1733. Jacob was 32 at the time, his wie, 27 and their son Christian was 4 years old. Christian Fagely, son of the emigrant, had a son, George. George had a son Christian, had a son, Christian, who was the great-grandfather of Curtis Q. Mc William of Shamokin. Christian Fagely, son of George,was born Sept 28 1764 in Maiden Creek township, Berks Co and moved to Northumberland Co., in 1808. He died Dec 31, 1845 and is buried at the Blue church. He married Magdalena Lehman, who wasborn 1773 in Berks Co. They were married June, 1792. Children; Elizabeth born March 16, 1794, married Henry Martz, and died in May, 1870, Catharine, born 1795, married Jacob Unger and they went West, John, born 1797, Benjamin, born 1798, died unmarried, Hannah, born 1800 died young, Solomon, born 1802 died 1883, Hannah2 born 1804, William, born 1806, died 1874, unmarried, Amos, born 1808, Mary Magdalena born 1810, died young, Nathan born June 30, 1812, Reuben, born July 25, 1814, died Feb 21, 1880, unmarried.
