A few years ago I stumbled across Sarah's obit. on microfilm at the library in Jim Thorpe. Nothing was mentioned abt. her parents names, but it did say that she was from the Lizard Creek area in Carbon County. William and Sarah lived in Parryville and that is where my 2nd great-grandmother, Cassandra (Rinker) Montz lived until her death. She was married to Cassius Jacob Montz who also was from Parryville. Cassandra's death certificate comfirms what another poster wrote that Sarah's last name was Lauer. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Susan_Appleton Surnames: Knappenberger, Greenzweig Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.carbon/1130.1684.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The 1860 census for Polk Twp., Monroe County, PA lists Philip C. Dutterer as 48 years of age, with Caroline, age 43 (who is actually Caroline Knappenberger), and three sons: William, age 13 who is Philip's son from his first marriage, James, age 4 who is Caroline's son from her first marriage (James Henry Knappenberger) and Edwin, who is one year of age. We do not know if Edwin is a son of Philip's from his first marriage or a son of Caroline and Phillip. In a November 1869 baptism record for Nathan Edwin Dotter, a son of William and Sally Ann Dotter, the sponsors are listed as Philip Dotter and Carolina Knappenberger. So it seems for sure that she was a housekeeper for Philip and not his legal wife. The 1870 census for Polk Twp., Monroe County, PA lists Philip C. Dutter as 56 years of age, a carpenter with Edwin Dutter, age 10. Also in the houshold is Caroline Burger, age 53 listed as housekeeper and her son, James Burger, age 15, who is actually James Henry Knappenberger. All were born in PA. In the 1880 census for Tunkhannock, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Caroline Knappenberger is listed as 64 years of age, listed as mother,, born in PA living in her son's home (James Henry). We are unsure if Caroline married Philip C. Dutter or was just his housekeeper. It seems likely that she was his housekeeper only. The first Catholic Church in the area was Immaculate Conception and served the Irish community. St. Joseph's on the East side was later. Both churches are still in existence, but they are part of Allentown Diocese now, not the Philadelphia Archdiocese. There was also a St. Joseph's in Summit Hill which would have been designated Mauch Chunk Twp. in early census records. I know that the Summit Hill church and IC both allow look ups. At least they did in the past. Another possibility, other than St. Jerome's (which I think was founded in 1833) is Immaculate Conception in Allentown. I read somewhere that parishioners from that parish founded the IC in Mauch Chunk. Good luck! Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: JudyMcE Surnames: Devine Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.carbon/3805.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I don't know if St. Josephs Church in Mauch Chunk Twp., is still an active church. You might have some luck by calling the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and getting information from them on where records of visiting priests, if there are any, might be located. The website for the info below is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~carbdat/m&h/mct.htm St. Joseph's Catholic Church-It appears from the records that in 1826 the Rev. Mr. Fitzpatrick, of the Catholic denomination and resident in Sunbury, visited this place occasionally. Fathers Cummings and Courtney, from Pottsville, came here quite regularly for several years, the former prior to 1832, and the latter prior to 1838. From the latter date until 1842, Rev. Mr. Wainwright, of Tamaqua, visited the people, after which time came Father Maloney, of the same place, until 1849. He received ground from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company for the location of a church. Next was Father Haingan, who came in 1849, and attended the spiritual wants of the people until 1852. During his term of service a small church was built. Rev. Dr. Manahan was the first resident pastor, during the years 1852-53. The community was visited again, until September, 1854, from Mauch Chunk by Father Coffee. Father Basil Shorb became resident pastor in October, 1854, and remained until Aug! ust, 1858, being succeeded by Rev. Hugh Magorien, until Aug. 9, 1866, when Rev. James Kelly assumed charge, and remained until Nov. 20, 1872, when Rev. John McElroy filled the place until Jan.18, 1875. St. Joseph's seems to be the only Catholic church in the area which dates to that era, but it may be that they went to Tamaqua or elsewhere for baptisms the family had baptisms done during their stay in Mauch Chunk. It might be a tough search but starting with finding possible locations for these priest's records and checking for anything at the Carbon County Courthouse in Mauch Chunk under the Devine surname would be the best place to start. I have never seen any of Gene's tree posted on the web, but do have a few pages of it that he mailed to me. I haven't communicated with him in a few years and I fear he may have passed on.
