    1. [PACARBON] Thomas family of Beaver Meadow
    2. Hi. I'm seeking info on John BenjaminThomas and Sarah Llewellyn Thomas who resided in Beaver Meadow from 1840-1860. Both are from Wales-- John b. 1812/1815 and Sarah born 1818. John came to the U.S. on the Barque Tiberias in 1838. The family came through Allegany Co., Md (many staying in Md.) The couple's son, James B., was born in Beaver Meadow March 20,1840. He married Margaret Watkins (born abt. 1841, Rumney, Wales) in 1859. James' young family eventually returned to Allegany Co., Md, but i'm trying to find what happened to parents, John and Sarah (and to James older brothers, William and John). I've found John Thomases listed in PA Mining deaths, but can't determine any one is my JT. Any info would be appreciated. (I have Margaret Watkins' parents as being David Watkins and Mary James (Mary, from Ireland.)) thanks, tuesday thomas

Author: JSterling8097 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.carbon/725.728.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The best info on Philip Ginder comes from the short biography of his grandson, Philip (1820-1912). There it states Philip Ginder came to America from Holland about 1745. That age would be backed up by the 1800 census (Penn Twp., Northampton Co.)showing him as age 45 or older. Following the 1800 census Penn Twp. was divided into east and west, with West Penn becoming part of Schuylkill Co. Since the Ginders do not appear in the East Penn censuses, I assume they lived in West Penn. It would be wonderful if we could link you Philip Grinder to Philip Ginder, but it doesn't seem to match up. And Philip was in search of a grind stone for his grist mill when he discovered the coal outcropping. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is a long shot , but the names and dates are similar. My ancestor Phillip GRINDER was born in 1761 (place unknown) and died in Butler Co, Pa in 1825. I am trying to connect him to the folks you mention on the Carbon board. I read somewhere that he was looking for millstones when he discovered the anthracite coal. Was his mill a grist mill or a sawmill?? I am supposing that the name could have been altered in Western Pennsylvania considering that he was a miller (grinder). Let me know what you all think of this possibility. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
